His attempts to wave C'ton away failed and S'ren had to watch in horror as the other man weaved his way through the throng of people toward him. Turning back around, S'ren was taken aback when he found L'yst's beautiful eyes on him. All the feelings he had felt before came washing down upon him. He wanted to talk to him and perhaps see where they stood. This was his chance...
"Hi," he said weakly, unable to think clearly. He had pursued him, but now circumstances had changed once again. "I think..."
"Yes?" He murmured.
"Come on, let's go enjoy that drink together."
He wanted to scream, but he didn't let it show. Instead he looked over his shoulder at C'ton and forced a smile on his face. He loved his friend dearly, but he had the be the King of bad timing. Half aware of the introductions darting back and forth, S'ren turned to look at L'yst.
"I..."
"I have to be going."
No! S'ren made to follow him, but C'ton gripped his arm. "That old Harper and his wife have asked us to join them to discuss plans. They want to start building tomorrow. Can you believe it?"
S'ren stared at L'yst's retreating back, his mouth partially open. If this continued his back would be the only part of his body he'd ever see again! S'ren snapped around and glared at C'ton. "I can't actually. Didn't you see I was in the middle of a conversation?"
"Ah yes. Nice guy. L'yst was his name right? Hey, maybe he could help us!" C'ton's eyes widened as if his idea was a gift from God. When he saw S'ren's sour expression his face fell. "Or not. Come on. Let's go. They've got the good stuff. Ancient wine from what I heard."
S'ren huffed and looked back over his shoulder at L'yst. He never seemed further away than he did right then. Sighing in defeat, his followed C'ton back to the old Harper couple. After joining them they went to enjoy a drink. S'ren could definitely use one about now.

B'lor stared at the first egg as it began to crack, not wanting to miss even one second of its hatching. He nodded his thanks when L'yst handed him some meat, but he didn't look away. Suddenly the egg split open completely, shards flying everywhere, a couple of them hitting his legs, but they were too small to be of any harm. In the egg's place was a tiny fire-lizard hatchling. B'lor's eyes widened. Was that just a strangely colored brown, or...? R'enh's exclamation confirmed that the hatchling was really "crimson," a color never seen before on draconic hide.
"Amazing! I didn't see any crimson firelizards in Southern," he said, his attention riveted on the little red hatchling as R'enh fed him (or her?). He looked back at the eggs when he heard more cracking, and watched as two greens and a blue hatched. They seemed normal, so R'enh's Crimson could be a one-time oddity.
The largest egg was cracking now, spiderweb fractures spreading down the center. A claw ripped through the middle, cutting the shell into two half-moon pieces. B'lor let out a soft gasp of admiration. There was a miniature Queen standing among the shells, her hide as glimmering and bright as Chalarath's.
The little gold lifted her head, surveying the people around her and sniffing the air. Her wings were extended, the wet membranes drying quickly. With a delicate peep--desperate creeling wasn't dignified--she launched herself into the air. The queen's first flight wasn't so graceful, and she flapped her wings a few times before tumbling into B'lor. The bronzerider froze as the gold latched her claws into his tunic and climbed her way up, trying to reach the food in his hand.
Another polite but insistent chirp reminded him what to do. He gently plucked the hatchling off of his tunic and had her perch on his hand. Shards, a gold that could fit in the palm of his hand! Truly a wonder. She ate the meat quickly, gobbling it down with surprising speed considering how polite she had been acting up until now. B'lor took R'enh's lead, mentally telling her to slow down. He felt a thrill when she did so. She really did understand him!
Of course she did, though. She was his. B'lor knew that as the small queen looked up at him with adoring eyes now swirling from red to rainbow, just like a dragon's.
It seems that you have two to share your mind now, Imahyth said, watching from his perch in the Stands.
Are you jealous? B'lor asked. He hadn't considered that before, but maybe he should have though of it before bonding to a firelizard.
No, I'm not, Imahyth assured him. She will make fine company, and I like Queens.
B'lor smiled at that. Then, the oddity of Impressing to a Gold of any sort struck him. He didn't know what gender R'enh's firelizard was, but Tobias, who was obviously interested in Chloe, had Impressed to a green; and a girl had Impressed to a blue. "It seems like they don't care about gender the way dragons do," he realized out loud. Remembering the people around him, he blushed a little. He must look like a lovestruck fool right now. But then he noticed that all of the new firelizard owners did, just like weyrlings.

The rest of the world had faded into the background as Ceinwen focused intently on R’gant and his conversation with Echo. They were both obscured by others who stood between them and Ceinwen’s vantage point. But she could still clearly make out both of their faces. R’gant seemed to be happy with her news. That was good to see. The smile on his face only added to his already impeccable masculine features. Then something changed. It was the look on Echo’s face. It had gone from one of sociable conversation to a sudden softness. Ceinwen didn’t like that one bit. Again she shifted in her seat. This time crossing one leg over the other and wrapping her arms around her waist as she glowered in disapproval at the other young healer.
There was an audible change in the assembled as the first egg cracked. The sudden clamor grabbed her away from her invidious thoughts. The excitement in the air was almost palpable. She relaxed in her seat and then looked around again, to see if she could spot R’gant. It was in the searching for him that she captured a glimpse of him moving purposefully in her direction.
Her heart began to race and she felt her skin warm. Fidgeting in her seat, she set both feet on the ground and leaded forward slightly, griping the edge of her seat in each hand.
"I dare say you're as excited about this hatching as I am," he said.
Ceinwen smiled up at him as he spoke. However, her brain froze and she had no idea what to say, so she remained silent. She watched him closely as he sat down bedside her, admiring his musculature and unconsciously leaning briefly toward him to catch his scent. Ceinwen sat with an ethereal expression on her face, periodically glancing at him out of the corner of her eye while she looked around for the little egg that was hatching. Catching sight of the tiny red creature flitting about for just a moment before it was hidden by the crowd. “Oh my,” she whispered in awe. “How incredible…” She was taken in by the jubilant feelings that surrounded them all. It was such a welcome change from all the pain and anguish that had become a part of their lives over the last fortnight. “Are all hatchings like this,” she asked R’gant in genuine curiosity, using the opportunity to gaze into his dazzling green eyes.

He watched as the tiny red settled on his palm and fell asleep. Holding his hand up to his ear he could hear little sounds. He swore he could feel the satisfaction of a good meal after a long fast in the tiny firelizard.
"Crimson...I can't believe it. I never would have guessed there were other colors of these little creatures than our own dragons. Did you see other Crimsons when you found the eggs, B'lor?"
He marveled at the color of the little guy, he was deep red and had looked almost brown when he hatched. He laughed a deep seated chuckle and put his other arm back around Maram. He found he liked having that right very much. He smiled his joy down into her eyes.
"Can you tell...is it a he or a she?"
"He," he said with certainty "it’s a male."
Then he turned to B'lor to see if he had an answer to Maram's question. He noted over his shoulder that Chloe and Tobias had crouched down and the man had a little green one in his palm.
He chuckled and looked around to see others with little baby fire lizards no bigger than their palms in various stages of eating or sleeping and the wonder on various faces.
"It doesn't look like they have a preference like the dragons do" he said nodding his head at the big man with the tiny green in his hand. He wondered if he'd had that same goofy look on his face.
Then he looked across where a young woman had a blue on her hand and smiled. This was a very good thing. They'd have to find more of the little beauties and his mind started working on a way to use them against thread. Well, he'd figure that out later for his attention was riveted on B'lor who seemed to have captured the attention of a petite golden prize.
"eat and sleep, that's how dragons grow" he repeated from his weyrling lessons, and smiled around at the whole room. The he turned his grin directly on B'lor.
"Congratulations!" he said to the Bronze rider before moving toward the door.

For a moment their eyes locked and R'gant was once again reminded of the yearning he had felt the other night. There was something in those brown eyes that drew him in. It was quite unmistakable and, if he wanted to humor himself, he imagined he saw interest in her eyes as well. R'gant folded his hands in his lap and turn his attention to the hatching below. He always did enjoy the excitement of a hatching. Although he'd never stand for one again, he liked seeing the smiling faces of the other expectant observers. This hatching in particular was exciting. No one knew who the little fire lizards would bond with. It was a game of luck really. Everyone milled around hoping for the best outcome although, with so few eggs, it was quite obvious that they all would not win. No one seemed to mind.
One fire lizard after another broke free from the confines of its shell and darted toward their 'owner.' The lucky person seemed to beam bright enough to light up the entire room. R'gant slid toward the edge of his seat to get a better view of Echo claiming one for herself. A luminescent smile rose to his face. She must be pleased.
“Oh my. How incredible…”
R'gant turned his eyes upon Ceinwen. Beautiful Ceinwen. The light bounded off her gorgeous blonde hair. Her skin, so fresh with youth, glowed as her excitement filled every inch of her innocent being. She looked barely older than nineteen turns--ten turns younger than him he scoffed, but his attraction to her was undeniable. And it was irrevocably blurring his common sense. R'gant hands broke free of the other. He was tempted to reach out a hand to hold hers, but held back as her next question reached his ears. Brows raised, his nodded.
"This is but a taste of what a true hatching is like," he explained, his voice tender. "When one impresses their life mate nothing else matters in this world except caring for your dragon. The warmth of that love would fill this entire room," he said gesturing around briefly. He looked around the room at the other onlookers for a moment before facing Ceinwen once more. "And that love would be seemingly incomparable to all else..." Until one finally meets their soul mate that is, he finished to himself as he gazed back into Ceinwen's brown eyes. Time seemed to slow down and had Xanith's words not filled his mind he was sure he would have kissed Ceinwen then.
Eyes momentarily closing, he turned away. What is it, Xanith?"
"Do not act so hastily, mine. We both know you're not ready."
"What is that supposed to mean?
"You're lonely. You've just lost your family and she is a pretty girl. Leave her now. There will be other chances to spend with her, I assure you. You have an early start come morning."
After a moment of indecision he finally agreed. "Ok. If you think that's best."
It took every fiber of his being not to ignore Xanith's words and stay beside Ceinwen, but Xanith knew him better than he knew himself. For now this would wait.
"Xanith calls," he said in an attempt to explain his odd behavior. Non-riders sometimes had a difficult time understanding the connection between a rider and their life mate. "I must go now, but I shall see you tomorrow..." It wasn't a question, but a promise. His reason for coming to her side had been completely forgotten. He'd thank her properly for tending to K'vys' health come morning. Until then...
Standing, he bowed to her graciously and then took his leave.

“It’s ok to move. If you stay crouched your knees will lock up.”
He turned and gave Chloe a bit of a goofy, happy grin as he tried to unbend himself without displacing the little green beauty who now rested in his hands. He was so stunned by all of it that he found he had no words.
“She’s beautiful!” she said and looked up into Tobias’ eyes “what is her name?”
“A name?” He said questioningly. “I don’t know. I’ll have to name her.” He turned his eyes to her. “Will you help me think of a name? I don’t know what to call her.” He reached a finger and gently stroked her head, pleased when she made a tiny sound and gave off feelings of contentment and pleasure.
“It’s amazing,” he whispered. “It’s like I can feel her, what she feels.” His brows furrowed a bit, finding that thought almost too hard to understand. “Is this what you feel when you’re with Alorath?” He asked quietly.
He looked around and saw that many people were leaving already, the hatching drawing to a close. “I’d love for you to tell me more about you and Alorath.” He turned his eyes to find her on the ledge just realizing something. “Will she be unhappy if I have my little firelizard around her?” Oh, he hoped not. Tobias could almost feel his heart clench at the thought of having to choose beauty the tiny creature he held in his hands and the woman and her dragon he adored.

Maram was just as excited as R'enh at all that had happened.
"He's wonderful," she murmured into his ear. Looking back she realized that all the little firelizards had hatched and bonded with someone. Wonderful!
They would have much to learn about these little cousins to their dragons. Much to learn for sure.
Maram spent a few minutes congratulating everyone who'd managed to Impress one of the little lizards, before turning to R'enh and saying, "why don't we get to know him a bit better back at the weyr?" With her hand on his arm, she walked out of the hatching sands with R'enh.

The little gold was falling asleep now, yawning as she curled up in B'lor's arms. B'lor smiled down at her, feeling totally happy. All the bad things that had happened couldn't touch this moment of joy. He would have to think of a name for the gold later. For now, he was feeling rather hungry himself. He decided to go find some food and then bring it back to his weyr so his new charge could rest. Of course, he would also have to show her to Lorcan, but not until she woke up again. Still grinning madly, he walked off the sand.

Post by Echo and Anayeth on Jul 18, 2010 14:51:40 GMT -5
If there was one thing Echo knew about dragons, it was that their hide needed to be oiled almost as soon as they were hatched. If these mini-dragons were at all like their larger counterparts, then Echo would need a lot of oil, but not nearly as much as, say, a Gold dragon... or even a Gold mini-dragon. So, the first place Echo went before any other place was to the infirmary.
She held her little Green in her arms, coveting the little thing, wondering how exactly something so small could look almost exactly like something so big. But those thoughts were wiped out of her mind as the Goldrider came up and congratulated her. It was a quick appraisal, but it was an appraisal nonetheless. Goldrider Maram had talked to her! Even if it wasn’t for something she did, necessarily, but something this little flitter did to her. Either way, her heart warmed. But Echo knew, also, that Maram probably would not remember her tomorrow, or the next sevenday, unless she saw the little green flitter with her. That’s okay, there was too much happening as it was.
Echo left to head for the infirmary…
End Echo… onto later…

“A name?” He said questioningly. “I don’t know. I’ll have to name her.” He turned his eyes to her. “Will you help me think of a name? I don’t know what to call her.”
He looked almost stunned and she grinned. Apparently these little ones didn’t announce their own names. She looked at the tiny one asleep in his palm and felt she would need to know her a little before she could figure out what to call her.
“It’s amazing,” he whispered. “It’s like I can feel her, what she feels.” She smiled “Yes, but she also talks to me but I can feel her emotions and she can feel mine.”
“Will she be unhappy if I have my little firelizard around her?”
“Oh don’t worry about that, Alorath already likes her, she was talking very possessively about HER flit a bit ago.” She said as she rubbed his arm.
“She feels a bit possessive of you as well.” She stood on tiptoe to kiss his cheek.
She took his unoccupied hand and pulled him toward the door. “Come on, we need to get her oiled and a bit of food for the night.”

Tobias found it hard to not just stare at the little green who seemed to flutter a bit in her sleepy state as they began to walk.
"So, Alorath likes me and our little friend here?" Tobias couldn't stop smiling as they moved out of the hatching grounds.
"I have so much to learn," he added as Chloe spoke of oiling the little firelizard. Wrapping one arm around her back, with the other still holding his nameless little friend, Tobias couldn't be happier. He'd work on a name for her...something that told something about the little green's personality.
"I'm glad you're here to teach me," he stated quietly as he kissed the top of her head. It seemed as though the moment he met Chloe his entire life had changed, and all for the better, even amidst the destruction that had rained down on Pern. It was a truly amazing feeling.

Ceinwen studied his face as he began to answer her question, the tone of his voice rolling over her like honey off of a spoon. She could sense the depth of his emotion as he explained the inimitable bond that is forged between a dragon and their rider. The concept was intriguing and yet incomprehensible to her. She did not miss a single word or gesture, capturing them in her memory so she could play them back in fond remembrance when she was off on her own.
His final statement hung in the air between them as she stared back into his alluring grey-green eyes, utterly captivated by him. She sensed that there was more he was thinking. But he had chosen to leave it unsaid. Perhaps he saw her as too young or naive to understand? Sadly, she had fallen victim to that on more occasions than she cared to admit; underestimated because of her youth. But she understood far more than most gave her credit for.
Suddenly he turned away. Ceinwen rapidly felt ill at ease. Had she done something to offend him? Was she ogling him too much and making him feel uncomfortable? Wait! But that could mean that he might think that she was attracted to him? She began to feel a bit embarrassed. What should she do now? Ceinwen did her best to remain calm, looking back at the hatching as she forced herself to take long, slow breaths while she brought herself back in check. There was no need to freak out.
"Ok. If you think that's best."
Had she missed something he said while she was indulging her own insecurities. She opened her mouth to ask what he had meant when he said: "Xanith calls", and then she understood. Bronze rider of Xanith, Lord R’gant was being called away by his… how had he put it? ‘Life mate’. Ceinwen gave him a look of understanding.
"I must go now, but I shall see you tomorrow..."
See her tomorrow? Really? Inside she was jubilant at the thought of seeing him again so soon. She did her best to hide the extent of her feelings in her countenance, not wanting to make a fool of herself in front of him. Ceinwen watched as he elegantly took to his feet, than very suavely bowed and took his leave, her eyes not leaving him until he was completely out of sight.
She sat for quite some time, lost in thought and over analysis of the entire encounter. Once she was sure she would be able to walk on her trembling limbs without teetering over, she stood and made her way out of the stands and back to the infirmary. Her mind sensibly settled on his desire to see her tomorrow having everything to do with her charge and nothing to do with her silly romantic notions. After all, he was a bronze rider and she was just an herbalist.
End Ceinwen
