Another bronzerider arrived, whose name B'lor couldn't remember. Or maybe he had never learned it in the first place. B'lor couldn't recall seeing this rider at the Flight, so maybe he had arrived after that. It was strange, not knowing everyone in the Weyr. He wondered how long it would take this ragtag bunch of riders and weyrfolk to seem like a real Weyr family.
"More advanced?" he repeated, raising an eyebrow. B'lor was looking forward to seeing just how closely these miniature dragons resembled their big cousins, and seeing how they Impressed would answer part of that. Before he could say anything more on the other bronzerider's idea, a Healer walked up and struck up a conversation with him. She called him R'gant. B'lor made a mental note to remember it.
Then R'enh arrived, taking up position beside his Weyrwoman. If the man seemed a little possessive of Maram, it was certainly understandable. The Flight was still fresh in everyone's memory. He nodded, wondering what R'enh wanted to speak to him about. Of course, R'enh would probably want to meet with all of the bronzeriders, and arrange the Wings. A ranking position had been out of reach at Fort, with many more older riders, but here there might be a promotion in his future. Now wasn't the time to think about that, though.
When R'enh asked what he called the miniature dragons, he snapped his fingers. "Fire-lizards...that's it. Like Maram said, fire breathing little lizards."
He noticed L'yst crossing the sands with a plate of meat and grinned. "Good idea, L'yst. Dragons always need to eat after they hatch, and I don't think these will be different." He looked back at the eggs, wondering when the first would hatch. This was almost as tense as a real Hatching!

Ceinwen had heard people talking about the miniature dragon eggs at dinner. She had never seen a full size dragon egg, let alone a tiny version. So when the meal was through she followed a group of people to a place they called the hatching sands.
There was a large crowd on a sea of sand. There seemed to be quite a lot of riders and Ceinwen immediately began to wonder if R’gant would be here. Rather than standing in the rapidly increasing crowd, she had taken to the stands and found seat the afforded her a good view of the sands below.
As she took a seat, her eyes scanned the crowd. She caught site of Echo moving through the throng and followed her with her eyes until she stopped. Ceinwen looked to see who she had gone to speak to and felt her stomach fill with butterflies at the sight of R’gant. She could not take her eyes off of him. There was just something about him that had her transfixed. Ceinwen found herself wondering what the two were talking about while she absentmindedly played with her hair. Then it dawned on her that Echo was likely giving him a report of K’vys. A small smile came to her face and she shifted in her seat wondering if Echo would tell him her name. Well, it would make sense that she would tell who was looking after the young rider. She imagined what it would sound like to hear him say her name and sighed dreamily at the thought.
Then it dawned of her that she had come here to see tiny eggs. So she looked around the mass of people into the middle of the sands and looked at the small colorful eggs. “Hmm…,” she muttered. Not having anything to base them on she was at a loss and soon found that her eyes once again traveled to the object of her infatuation.

Maram couldn't help but turn and smile when R'enh joined her and placed his arm protectively around her. It felt...right...somehow. More than just Weyrleader and Weyrwoman. It felt as though they were meant to be together. Maram had never felt that way with T'pin in the past, so this was a new experience for her.
Perhaps it was just the newness of the whole thing. She wondered if the feelings would subside now that the Flight was over. That thought actually made her feel a twinge of sadness. Only time would tell.
Glancing around, she noticed that many more had arrived, including the blue-rider, L'yst who had been part of the group that found them. He'd brought fresh meat. That was a good idea. She nodded towards him when he came to stand by them, but her attention was on B'lor.
"Firelizard...that has a ring to it, doesn't it? Maybe that's what we should call them," she said with a smile.
Suddenly her attention was drawn back to the sands as a sound of an egg cracking filled the space. It was almost as though every being on the sands froze and held their breath in that instant. Now they would find out just what these little...well...firelizards were going to be like. Her eyes watched the tiny egg closest to them as it rocked and the crack began to enlarge.

The warmth of the hatching sands could be felt as she followed Tobias in. Then she realized that in times like this he was TOO big.
"You don't mind do you? I've never actually seen any kind of Hatching."
“Go for it” she said chuckling at him. One nice thing was following in his wake as the big guy pushed his way through the crowd.
He knelt down probably realizing that others couldn’t see around him and she caught sight of R’enh with his arm around the Weyrwoman. She grinned at him and congratulated him with a smile and nod. Then she pointed to Tobias and his reaction was great.
“You’re gonna love this,” she said and then “oh and if one of them comes toward you, feed it. Dragons are always really hungry when they hatch.”
She put her hand on his shoulder and squeezed.

“Fire Lizards” he repeated after B’lor. Maram seemed to like it. “Fire Lizards it is then!”
He saw Chloe come in behind the Tanner Craftmaster and then congratulated him on his ascension to Weyrleader. He gave her a big smile and then she pointed to the big man and he nodded and gave her his own congratulations.
No wet blankets but it would take a special crafter to understand and accept a relationship of any length with a green rider. Chloe would be worth it if he wasn’t jealous.
He let Maram go for a moment and bent down to look at the plate of meat L’yst had brought and he picked up a piece. The crack of the egg took his attention and he found himself holding his breath and urging the little ‘fire lizard’ on.
It split open shards flying and he grinned as the little dragonet spilled out “Is it…? It’s RED” he exclaimed and pointed. He didn’t realize he was pointing with the hand that held the meat until suddenly the little thing was flying straight at his hand.
He flipped his palm up and the tiny dragon pecked at the meat and lit on his hand. It was no bigger than his palm and it… “Ha ha, it tickles” he said grinning around at the others. The tiny eyes whirled with hunger and he grabbed another piece to give the little thing when it finished the first piece.
He laughed and grinned at Maram. “Wow, a Crimson Fire lizard.” Suddenly the little firelizard rubbed its head against his finger and he got the image and emotion of hunger and put the other piece within reach. The little belly on the dragon was extending and he tried to tell it to chew like he’d told Mnoranth so many years ago. It cocked its head and chattered at him before taking a smaller bite.
He couldn’t help laughing “I think he understood me” His eyes turned to Maram in amazement. “Do you believe this?” he smiled at B’lor too.
He looked at the remaining eggs to see others begin to crack.

“I was amazed at how well he was doing. Ceinwen—that’s the healer who took care of K’vys—has brought him back. He was conscious earlier, and able to speak to us. Nothing in the way of his mentality seems to be wrong, and his chaffed legs look bad, still, but it’s only been a day. They are, however, healing wonderfully.”
A smile rose to R'gant's lips the more Echo explained the situation. He was completely relieved that the boy had come around and was quickly progressing toward a healthy state. Although she gave Ceinwen--was that the gorgeous blonde's name--all of the credit, he was sure she'd played her own part in the boy's recovery and he was grateful to her.
“Oneth is doing well, too. As I had expected last night, he has only sore wings. There are no broken bones, and he should be back to normal in only a couple days. The two are still in the infirmary but are expected to make a full recovery.”
"I'm so very happy to hear that." He said, reaching out and taking the woman's hand. He didn't think that his gesture may look odd to onlookers.
"Thank you for all that you've done, dear Echo." He'd be sure that her name got around to the other riders. She had proven to be healer proficient in her skills. There weren't many people in the Weyr that he could genuinely say he trusted, so Echo's name was now on a very short list.
The sharp intakes of breath around them signaled the beginning of the hatching. Releasing Echo hand, he smiled at her one final time and then turned to watch the goings on. "You'll be able to see better in the front," he suggested. He may tower over the others but Echo's petite stature worked against her. Leaving her to watch with everyone else, he made his way to the stands so that he wouldn't be in the other people's way. Plus, he'd get a better view from there.
He looked ahead and it was then that he saw Ceinwen tucked away on her own. Pushing aside his own hesitations, he made his way over to her. "I dare say you're as excited about this hatching as I am," he said. He took a seat at her side and gazed down at the sands. At that moment a red fire lizard popped out of his shell and made its way toward their Weryleader. The dragon's around them grunted and shifted around on their ledges. This was certainly going to be a momentous occasion.

L'yst turned his attention to the sands after greeting the leaders and nodding his head when Maram spoke of the meat. He'd felt it was a good idea, knowing dragon-kind.
That was when he caught sight of a certain head of curly hair. He felt his heart beat just a bit faster. He hadn't spoken to S'ren since he'd been pulled out of the weyrling barracks this morning. He chanced a glance in his direction, but was quickly distracted as movement on the sands indicated something was happening.
Suddenly, he watched as the first egg cracked and a tiny, red dragonlike creature. L'yst was astounded. And then, it had alighted on the Weyrleader's hand, anxiously devouring the meat he'd picked up.
"Keep feeding it," L'yst murmured from beside him, eyes glued to the little creature.
He reached down and picked up pieces of meat and started handing them to whomever was nearby. He shoved a piece towards the large tanner.
"Here, take this," he said, trying to get slices of meat divided out so that the little creatures would be coaxed towards the waiting crowd. For the moment, L'yst's thought were solely focused on seeing this Hatching succeed, but hidden underneath that was something deeper he needed to see to as soon as his job here was done.

Post by Tobias on Jul 14, 2010 22:34:12 GMT -5
Tobias was fascinated by the activity that started on the sands. He simply nodded his head at Chloe's words. He didn't really expect one to come near him, but sure he could feed it, if he had any food on him.
He had started to turn to tell Chloe something along those lines, when his eyes were riveted back to the sands as more eggs began to crack and the tiny creatures tried to emerge.
Just that suddenly the rider standing beside him had shoved a hunk of meat into his hand.
"Wha..." Tobias started to say, turning to look to his left, when he suddenly felt a flicker of movement before him.
"Don't move," he heard someone whisper, though he wasn't sure who. Tobias slowly turned his head back to see that a tiny little green creature had alighted itself on his hand and began eating the meat he held.
He watched, stunned, uncertain what to do. The little creature cocked its head at him and made a slight chirruping noise. Someone shoved more meat at him and Tobias dutifully fed the creature all the while gazing at it with astonishment.
He suddenly felt the creatures hunger and he almost dropped it in astonishment. The little green alighted right before him, sending off feelings of fright and uncertainty.
"No..no. It's okay," Tobias called out softly, having forgotten that anyone else was even around him. He offered her, for he suddenly knew it was a her, more of the meat. After hanging in the air for a second, she landed back on his palm and began to gorge herself.
Tobias nearly felt like weeping. It was such an overwhelming sensation to hold something so small in his massive hands. What ever was he going to do with this little creature? He slowly reached up his other hand and stoked the little head with his finger. The green seemed to lean into the gentle touch with a little chirrup. Tobias felt a surge of love that he knew extended towards the little dragon...no firelizard. It was the same feeling he felt when....Tobias blinked, realizing something far deeper than his love for the little green in that moment. Could he really love her just like that? He wanted to shout it to the world, but dared not scare the little lizards away.
As his green, for yes, she was now his green gorged herself on another piece of meat, her belly seemed to extend and suddenly she curled up and blinking her eyes tiredly at him, she fell asleep with a tiny peep. Tobias stayed stock-still, totally out of his element. Now what should he do?

Alix was stunned when one of the eggs started hatching, and out came a red firelizard as they would soon be dubbed by the weyrleader, who had impressed the little thing.
Now thouroughly intrigued, Alix made her way to the front so that she could better see the rest of the eggs.
As they began shaking one of the eggs happened to catch her eye. It was a pretty normal sized egg compared to the rest of them. She watched as it rocked back and forth, the little one inside obviously trying to get out. "I wonder what color it will be", she thought as she continued to watch it.
She continued to watch "her" egg as it continued rocking. She watched as small spidery cracks appeared on the shell, small bits and peices breaking off. Finally with one final heave the shell broke!
Out onto the sands spilled a darling blue firelizard. Alix watched amazed, and awestruck as the little blue stuck his head in the air sniffing for food. With her eyes glued to the little lizard, she stuck out he hand offering the little bits of meat she had to offer.
She stood stock-still as the blue gained his footing and started walking toward her. As he made his way to her hand, she noticed how beautiful his hide was. It was a nice frosty blue color, like the kind you during winter as a lake freezes over, or how frost forms on the grass or tree leaves.
As she kept feeding him, Alix could literially feel his hunger. As the blue ate the last peice of meat Alix had in her hand, she looked at him as he cocked his head, and chirped at her. She watched as he put his two front feet on the edge of her hand and started licking her hand. She started laughing as he licked her hand, but she could feel his worry as he wondered if there would be any more food, and that he was still hungry.
Alix immidietly looked around to see if anyone had any more meat. "Is there any more meat", she said as she looked around. Sunddenly she saw someone who was handing out raw meat to people. She recognized him as L'yst, the bluerider who she had met earlier. Grabbing some from his outstreatched hand she thanked him, and turned back to her firelizard. She heard him chirp happily as he clambored over to her other hand so he could resume eating.
Alix watched with relative ammusment as he devoured the meat that was in her other hand. She watched as he finished that last little bit, and walked over to her, butting his head on her knee. Despite the fact that she was feeling full for some reason Alix reached down and picked up her little firelizard, his eyes starting to droop in sleepiness. She felt a sudden surge of love come her way when "her" firellizard rubbed his head against her chin. Oh things were going to be interesting from now on.

She watched in awe and almost held her breath as the tiny green hung in the air delicately plucking at the meat Tobias offered. Her lips twitched in a smile and she found herself watching the Tanner more than the little firelizard.
She landed on his hand and the wonder in his face was priceless. She looked so tiny and fragile yet when he startled her she chirped at him.
"No..no. It's okay,"
“Beautiful green like me” was the smug comment of Alorath who’d perched herself to watch with the others.
”Yes” agreed Chloe “Green is beautiful”
Her hand rubbed against his back as he crouched there with the tiny firelizard eating out of his palm. She smiled and knelt down next to him knowing how emotional these bonds could be if they were anything like dragons in the least.
“Is she ours” the big green asked Chloe “No, she’s Tobias’” she answered quickly “Then she’s ours too, I like her.” Chloe just shook her head and turned back not quite sure what Alorath meant by that then chuckled as she watched the baby firelizard fall asleep in his palm. He froze and she whispered.
“I’ts ok to move. If you stay crouched your knees will lock up.” She bit her lips and grinned at him. Then just past the big tanner she saw a girl feeding a blue and the same process happening all over again.
She stood and tried to urge Tobias to as well, she wanted to get a better look at the little thing. Her little nose was poked under her wing and if you got close you could hear little tiny sounds.
“She’s beautiful!” she said and looked up into Tobias’ eyes “what is her name?”

Post by Echo and Anayeth on Jul 15, 2010 12:42:04 GMT -5
Echo couldn’t miss the smile R’gant wore as she explained to him that K’vys and Oneth would be okay. Did he really think the worst? Did he really believe that K’vys was mortally injured, or that he would not get well again? Even he had seen the extent of the injuries. He had probably had far worse, and, as Thread started to fall again and as the Wings were sent out to combat it, he would see much worse. Faranth, everyone would see much worse. Nothing like tired riders to combat Thread after an exodus took over the whole world.
R’gant took a hold of Echo’s hand. Echo felt all of a sudden finicky as his warmth warmed her hands. Did he just call her ‘dear Echo’? No one had called her that before, before maybe her father, and that was different. That was way different. It shouldn’t have been. It shouldn’t have been different, because R’gant was a Bronzerider, and easily ten Turns older than her. His warmth extended all the way up her arm so that it felt as if she were numb, and she blinked warmly up at him, looking into his eyes. She had promised herself she wouldn’t do that, but, of course, he had taken her off-guard.
An egg cracked and then exploded. This broke the spell placed on Echo, and her head whipped around to try and see what color had just hatched. R’gant released her hand, and the warmth left. Feeling strange, she turned back to R’gant, but he had said he goodbyes and left. Echo’s brows furrowed. She didn’t really want to see the mini-dragon hatching… not now. But another crack of an egg heralded another mini-dragon’s birth, and she spun to try and crane her head over the others’. Her sandwich, still halfway intact and in the hand that hadn’t been held by R’gant, was forgotten.
Amidst the cracking of shells, a small fracture found itself on an egg. It was nothing, really, and it looked nothing more than a freckle on the egg. But that small slit in the egg was all it took, and the small firelizard knew. With a sudden rock, the hatchling inside managed to break her shell neatly in half. Falling into the right half of her shell, she avoided getting any sand on her in the beginning. Her hide was pale green, almost like bleached aloe, and her tiny veins showed green with the ichor of life. Her wings, drenched and tiny, flare wide as she searched for food. The wing-bones were the same pale green, but the sails deepened into a dark, forest green. She was not a large firelizard, and certainly was not as large as the green who had hatched before. She was not bulky, and would probably grow into a more streamlined creature. Her hungry, multifaceted eyes traced laser beams, it seemed, into the humans she looked upon.
Meat. She needed meat. Meat. Meat. She smelled it, but she could not see it. She was hungry. They were all looking at her funny. She was not funny. She might not have been as wonderful, beautiful, as what was contained in the gold egg, but she was just about. And she was hungry. Meat. Where was meat? Suddenly, a big-pink-thing moved, and the little green saw meat held in the hand of another big-pink-thing. Taking a delicate step onto the sand, as if testing it, she found she could move. That was when she made a bee-line for the meat (MEAT!) in the big-pink-thing’s hand.
Echo felt something try to crawl up her leg. From what she’d seen from the other mini-dragons, they had used their wings to fly. So, when she looked down, she was utterly surprised to see that there was a mini-dragon trying to claw its way up her legs. Instantly, she dropped, and the mini-dragon was up her bent knees faster than she could say ‘Faranth, what a beauty!’ (which she did say) and in her hand. The little firelizard began busily pulling the meat out of her sandwich, making small croons of joy. Meat!
Then the firelizard looked at Echo. Echo felt the pull of something very, very faint. The firelizard seemed to smile. There, her-big-pink-thing was hers now, no other. Now, more meat, please? Echo realized that the mini-dragon had finished all the meat, but it was hardly necessary to ask for more, because more was automatically handed to her. Just as the little green mini-dragon started to cry, she presented the thing with more meat. Meat!
Echo’s brown eyes looked up to search for R’gant, a smile encasing her mouth. But her smile fell as she met only the appreciative faces and kind words of people she didn’t know. The mini-dragon chirped, which sounded funny since her mouth was full, and Echo looked back down, faint traces of the previous smile now playing across her lips. “You look like dried Aloe in a—” but whatever else she was about to say, the little green cut her off with a quick look and a croon. “What, what did I say?” The little green looked at her-big-pink-thing and chirped again, liking how that had sounded—whatever it was that had sounded so good. Was that how the big-pink-things talked? “Aloe-in-a?” Echo asked again; another chirp. “Well, that’s a pretty name if I do say so myself! Little, pretty Aloenna.” And the green started to eat again. But the smile that had formed when Echo searched for R’gant did not show its pretty face again, though a lesser one could be found…

Post by Maram and Chalarath on Jul 15, 2010 14:24:22 GMT -5
Maram watched the events unfolding around her with a look of keen interest. It reminded her that in the not too distant future, her own dear Chalarath would lay a Clutch of eggs to be hatched.
But mine will be much greater in size, came the sleepy voice of her queen.
Yes, love, of course they will, Maram replied with a hint of a smile on her face. She was quickly distracted as the first egg broke open and...a red...lizard came forward. Red? Red? There were other colors of firelizards than dragons? Maram was shocked and surprised.
Her eyes were riveted on the little creature that had rested in R'enh's hand.
She grinned wildly at him, feeling his excitement alongside her own. Her hand rested on his shoulder as she gazed down at the little firelizard.
"Crimson...I can't believe it. I never would have guessed there were other colors of these little creatures than our own dragons. Did you see other Crimsons when you found the eggs, B'lor?" She asked him without turning around, knowing he was the closest from the Southern group to her.
"Can you tell...is it a he or a she?" She asked R'enh. So fascinated by this little lizard because of its color and in whose hand it rested, Maram hardly noticed all the others hatching around them.

L'yst watched the happenings going on around him, helping those who had managed to coax one of the little creatures to them.
Not wishing any to come to him, he handed off the tray of meats to another and moved further back into the crowd. He didn't want another little creature in his life. Woreth gave him everything he needed. Well... L'yst glanced through the crowd again, spotting what he was looking for....almost everything.
He tore his eyes away, back to the activities on the sands. It seemed that things were settling down after the initial hatchings. There were still eggs rocking anxiously as though waiting for their turn, but the atmosphere in the gathering had already changed. A few of the spectators had already made their way back out towards the Bowl, having seen whatever it was they had hoped to see.
L'yst cast another glance through the crowd, but this time, he didn't see the distinctive curl he'd been looking for. Somehow he must have missed seeing him leave or he was now so well hidden by those who still pressed forward for a look at the creatures, that L'yst could not find him.
Feeling a bit deflated, L'yst decided he'd had enough of the hatching and turned to follow those who were making their way back out to the bowl.

S'ren and C'ton mingled near the back of the crowd, chatting with riders and craftmen they had met on the journey to the Weyr. While he was thrilled to reaquaint himself with everyone, he continued to glance back over his shoulder toward the sands to see if the blue rider was still among the crowd. His heart leapt into his throat quite a few times when he didn't see him immediately, but quickly settled back down into his chest when, though the crowd, he saw him tending to the tiny lizards.
"I'd love to help you rebuild your home," he told a fellow harper. The man had managed to bring his entire family with him when they crossed the seas. With only the remnants of a ancient Hold to live in, S'ren gladly jumped on the chance to help the Hold folk. He had ample time to make himself useful now. Besides, his mother and father would be looking forward to seeing his face again. He hated to admit that he hadn't taken the time to see either of them, although he was sure his father was wandering about in the Weyr someplace. Until now their paths had yet to cross since arrival.
"I'm going to take a closer look at the tiny fire lizards," he said to C'ton. The other man nodded and watched him make his way through the crowd. His true goal was to find L'yst, but when he arrived at the center of the hatching he found that the other man had already gone. He furrowed his brow and spun to look through the crowd for him. It was then that he saw his retreating back.
"Aren't they just adorable?" A young girl asked as she bowed forward to get a better look. S'ren looked down at the tiny lizards and he smiled.
"Yes, quite." One little dragon made to scamper toward his direction. Oh no! That was not going to happen.
"Grab it, mine," Kasalith said to him from above. She would like to have a 'sibling.' Then they both could drive him up the wall. Kasalith's enthusiasm kept him on his toes already. There was no need to bring another dragon into his life.
Thinking quickly, S'ren gripped the girl's shoulders and nudged her forward. "Look, I think he likes you," he said to the girl, stepping behind her in an attempt to confuse the little lizard. He patted the girl on the back and disappeared back into crowd.
Once he broke free he searched the crowd of people for L'yst again. Ah! There he was. He hurried to catch up. He was only a few feet from him when a loud voice echoed through the crowd.
"S'ren. We've been invited for a drink, my friend. Come," C'ton yelled across the room for all to hear. S'ren grimaced and turned to wave his friend away, quite aware that almost everyone in the room was now looking at him.

Just as he had made it to the tunnel connecting the sands to the Bowl, L'yst heard someone call out the name he'd had on his mind all day.
Turning, his eyes fell on the dark curly locks and the green eyes. L'yst felt a surge of hope, maybe he'd have the chance to talk to S'ren. His eyes, however, flickered over to the person who had called out. His arm still raised above the crowd to get the greenriders attention. Looking between the two, L'yst jumped to conclusions. Now that he thought about it, he's seen the two arrive together, but he hadn't dwelled on it much. It was hard to ignore now.
"S'ren," L'yst said in greeting, his eyes gazing at the other man. "I think..."
His words were interrupted as S'ren's friend moved up to him and repeated his words from earlier. "Come on, let's go enjoy that drink together."
All that L'yst had contemplated throughout the day seemed dashed in that moment. He watched the interaction between the pair and just knew that there must be something more there, for who wouldn't see something in S'ren?
"I better let you go," he said, his eyes harboring a flicker of disappointment as he quickly glanced at C'ton, who'd proceeded to introduce himself. "I'm L'yst. Nice to meet you." No, it's not really, he thought bitterly, but he forced a smile onto his face anyway. "I have to be going." And turning away before they both saw through his charade, L'yst moved through the tunnel, away from something that could have been, but no longer seemed possible in his mind.
