Basic Candidate Information
What is a Candidate?
A Candidate is someone who has been chosen to stand on the hatching grounds during a hatching in hopes of Impressing a dragonet.
How are Candidates Chosen?
Candidates are chosen in a few ways. All weyrbred children are permitted to stand as a candidate once they reach the age of 12. Weyrbred children do not need to be Searched.
Anyone who was not born in the Weyrs, is normally Searched by a dragonrider. Certain dragons have a sense about which individuals are good candidates to stand at a hatching. Once chosen the individual has the right to accept or decline the offer. If accepted, the Candidate will relocate to the Weyr until the Hatching.
Anyone who is living in the Weyr, but has not been ‘chosen’ to stand as a weyrbrat of a rider, can be ‘Searched’ in a slightly different way. People of the Weyr may suggest the person stand as a candidate and as long as the Candidatemaster, Weyrlingmaster, Weyrwoman or Weyrleader agree, the Weyr Folk persona may stand for a hatching.
For the purposes of this RP, you may choose to have already been Searched when you create your candidate or have your character Searched within the RP itself.
How old are Candidates?
Individuals may start to stand for Hatchings as young as 12 and continue to do so until they reach the age of 21.
What are the posting requirements of Candidates?
Candidates are expected to be an active part of the RP prior to the Hatching and Impression. The more good quality posts a candidate writes prior to hatching, the more likely they will Impress a dragon of their choosing. Though this is never a guarantee.
However, any candidate that does not at least attempt to write two good quality posts PRIOR to the start of Hatching, will be forced to wait until another hatching to try and Impress. You will NOT Impress at all if you have not posted for your character.
What does a Candidate do while waiting for Impression?
Candidates are an important part of the Weyr. They take classes to learn more about dragons, life in the Weyr and Impression, while also continuing their studies and working to do their part to help the Weyr. Candidates with a craft will often continuing to work at and study their craft while waiting for Impression. Other Candidates will find tasks to do around the Weyr, such as working in the Lower Kitchens or Storerooms, helping with various crafts, cleaning, cooking, and other necessary things to everyday life.
All Candidates will be schooled in reading and writing if they have not already received such training. They will also spend time with the Candidatemaster and others taking classes to learn the things they will need in preparation for Impression.
Where do Candidates live?
Candidates live in the candidate barracks. Normally three candidates of the same sex share a barrack room (like a small weyr). The barracks would have all the basic necessities of a shared sleeping quarters. The barracks are comfortable and the Candidates are provided for by the Weyr. However, if someone has more expensive tastes, they would need to acquire any luxury items from their families or with their own monies.
Candidates do bathe in the communal bathing rooms. This may be awkward for some at first, but it is necessary to quickly adapt to the more open view of sexuality in the Weyr in order to adjust well.
