Dragon Weyr will be using all the basic dragon colors, as well as adding new colors as we see fit.

Gold Dragons- These are the queens of the Weyr. They are always female and always bond with heterosexual females. They clutch but cannot chew Firestone to produce flame. They are the largest of all dragons ranging in size from 38-42 meters from head to tail. Gold dragons are by far the rarest dragons on Pern, at just less than 1% of the population. They are dominant over all other colors; any non-gold dragon will invariably obey a queen's orders, even against the wishes of its own rider. Queens are incapable of digesting firestone and producing flame (see below); however, they do fight Thread - they fly in the lowest wing, with their riders armed with specially designed flamethrowers to flame any Thread missed by the above wings. An egg that is going to hatch a gold dragon is notable: It is gold-colored and larger than other eggs. A gold dragon will always Impress a heterosexual female and are believed by most Weyrfolk to prefer young women who were not raised in the Weyr.
The first gold to rise in a mating flight of a new Weyr becomes Weyrwoman. After that, the Weyrwoman's Second or if there is not a designated Weyrwomans Second, first gold to rise after the Weyrwoman passes away or retires becomes the new Weyrwoman. Any other queen rider is given the title of Jr. Weyrwoman. The Weyrwoman's Second is selected from the Jr. Weyrwoman as most capable to lead by the Weyrleaders.
Bronze Dragons - Bronze dragons are male, and always bond to heterosexual males. They chew firestone and can hold a flame for several minutes. They are the largest of the male dragons, dwarfed only by golds, their sizes ranging around 35-38 meters long. The senior bronze of the Weyr is determined through which bronze wins the mating flight of the senior gold. The rider then becomes Weyrleader. Bronzes only comprise of about 5% of all dragons. They are almost always the ones to mate with queens, as the smaller colors generally lack the stamina to chase and catch the gold dragons when they rise to mate. Due to the 5-1 bronze/gold ratio and the infrequency of gold mating flights, they often mate with greens (the losers of a gold flight almost always seek a green for their needs), but their size often puts them at a disadvantage in chasing the agile, smaller females. In canon Pern, the rider of a bronze dragon is always a heterosexual male.
Brown Dragons Brown dragons are male and range in size from 30-35 meters long. Smaller than bronzes, they are still strong, avid fliers and fighters, and are more agile than the larger bronze. They may occasional mate with a queen, but this is not overly common, as the bronzes are able to outfly the slightly smaller browns. Browns normally impress only heterosexual or bisexual males. On some occasions browns do impress homosexual males or very masculine bi-sexual or homosexual females.
Blue Dragons - Blue dragons are the smallest of the male dragons at 25-30 meters in length. They make up over a third of all the dragons on Pern and are the largest part of the Thread fighting forces. They do not have the stamina that larger dragons have, making mating with queens nearly impossible. Blues do not normally stay in a Threadfight for the whole fight for the same reason. Blues normally impress males of any sexuality, but they have been known to impress homosexual or bisexual females with a strong masculine personality.
Green Dragons - Green dragons are the smallest of all normal dragon colors ranging in size from 20-25 meters. These infertile females are very agile and fast moving, though lack the stamina of larger dragons in mating and thread fighting. Greens make up nearly half of all dragon colors found on Pern.
They can chew firestone, but they cannot clutch, and their flame is usually short, bursts of heat that make them ideal for mid to lower altitude cleanup during threadfall
Greens rise often to appease their own sexual appetite and those of the other dragons in the Weyr. Greens impress females of any sexuality, and homosexual males or bisexual males with a more feminine personality.
Dragon Impression
When a dragon hatches, its first instinct is to find its lifemate, the one person with whom it is suited to bond with. A dragon will never Impress an unsuitable candidate, nor any candidate that is mentally ill or unstable. Normally, those with physical ailments are not presented at hatchings, but a physical problem would not deter a dragon from Impression if the candidate was suitable.
If a dragon does not find a suitable candidate upon hatching, the dragon will die. In a matter of moments it will blink into /between/ never to return again. This is not a choice but a fact that was programmed into their genetic makeup. There is no possibility of feral dragons on Pern.
Dragon Maturity
Once bonded, dragon and rider are considered weyrlings until they reach maturity and have received all the necessary training. A weyrling only 'graduates' from weyrling status when he or she is chosen by a wingleader to join a wing.
Dragons take anywhere from one and half to two turns to reach maturity. Normally, the larger the dragon the longer it takes to reach maturity. All dragons are normally ready to learn to fly around six months of age (about halfway to reaching adult maturity).
Greens are the first to reach maturity around 1 and half turns. The other dragons reach maturity in an 'order' of size following that. Greens normally rise to mate before reaching full adult maturity, around 1 turn of age. Golds do not normally reach adult and sexual maturity until 2 turns of age.
Thread and Queens
The Pernese believe that chewing firestone makes female dragons sterile; they therefore refuse to allow queens to use it. Greens, on the other hand, are so common that if they produced offspring it would quickly lead to overpopulation. They always chew firestone, and because of their numbers and agility they are vital to any Thread-fighting force.
However, Dragonsdawn suggests that Kitti Ping -possibly motivated by old-fashioned ideas about gender roles- deliberately engineered greens to be infertile and gold dragons to be incapable of producing flame in order to protect the gold dragons, the only reproductively fertile females, from the dangers of Thread fighting.
