A Break from the Monotony

Damir surveyed Dragon Hold, as he awaited the arrival of the Dragon Weyr Weyrleader. To some, it wouldn’t look like a whole lot, but given where they were just over a turn before... it was all rather impressive. The Weyrleader was visiting so they could discuss tithes and other executive matters.

**Too bad Saliene isn’t here to see it all,** he thought to himself. After his wife had been struck and killed by falling debris, their infant son had been removed from her womb. He hadn’t lived long without his mother in such chaos. Damir hadn’t even been able to properly mourn his wife and son time many sevendays after the disaster.

It had been one turn since her passing. Under other circumstances, he would have felt it too soon to move on. But he had responsibilities. He needed to set a good example for his holders, and produce strong children. And he needed an heir, but ironically, that was much less of a concern to him. **My heir is a second concern to just having strong children,** he thought to himself. Arguably, female children would be better, given their need to help the population. Birthrights, and bloodlines... the things that had defined every moment of his life up until a turn ago were not second priority.

They would need to have a Gather, Damir thought. Sure, things weren’t as settled as he would have liked them to be, and resources were still a bit sparse, but everyone had been working so hard to get things in order. They needed a break, even if that break was only for a day or two. And perhaps he’d find another woman, someone who he may not love, but he could at least have a family with. A woman who’d make a strong Lady Holder.

Damir nodded to himself. He would begin planning a Gather. His people deserved it. He added that to the list of things to discuss with the Weyrleader once he arrived.

[R'enh and Mnoranth]

Mnoranth's wings beat strongly as they rose from their weyr to circle the star stones. So very much had changed that he hesitated to think on all the fresh wounds to their spirits.

He'd loved Maram more than he knew until they found she had to go. But that was behind them. She had to go and help at Fort Weyr. Somehow through all that had happened, Fort had survived. Their queens were too young being little more than weyrlings.

His thoughts were interrupted by their arrival at the Hold and he shook his head to clear it. It would be much better if he had his wits about him when he met the new Lord Holder.

They landed in the court before the main hold. He slid from the big bronze's back and walked to the Holds main entrance.

A drudge met him at the door and showed him to the Lord's study.

"My Lord," said the drudge. "The Weyrleader," she smiled shyly at him and then closed the door.

"My Lord Damir."

Damir pulled himself out of his reverie as the drudge announced the arrival of the Weyrleader. He turned to meet him, a broad smile forming on his face. In the time since they had found Dragon Weyr, Damir had grown to respect the other man's leadership ability.

"Good day, Weyrleader," he greeted, extending his hand to the other man. There would have been a time where he would have been stuffy and standoffish, but he'd grown a lot in the past turn. Saliene would have been proud. "Please, have a seat," he said, pouring the Weyrleader a glass of redfruit juice. While wine would have been more customary, it wasn't something that they'd prioritized yet, and Damir wanted to hold as much as he could for special events.

His face became more solemn as he said, "I'm sorry to hear that Maram had to leave, but I am glad to hear that there were other survivors." While the two men had never formally discussed their personal relationships, Damir had seen him around the Weyrwoman enough to see his affections.

"On a more positive note, I think that we now have enough spare food in our stores in order to hold a proper Gather. I know it is somewhat risky, as it will diminish our emergency supplies, but I believe that the benefit to morale will be very worthwhile."

[R'enh and Mnoranth]

R'enh entered the Lord's office and took the proffered hand. Then he took the indicated seat and made himself comfortable.

"I'm sorry to hear that Maram had to leave, but I am glad to hear that there were other survivors."

He gave the other man a bleak smile. He knew if anyone understood it was the man before him. His own history of tragedy was well enough known. Of course everyone now days had their own issues to deal with since the red star had thrown so much rock along with Thread at them.

"We must rebuild dragonkind to protect the future, so we all do what we must."

"On a more positive note, I think that we now have enough spare food in our stores in order to hold a proper Gather. I know it is somewhat risky, as it will diminish our emergency supplies, but I believe that the benefit to morale will be very worthwhile."

"Well that should uplift everyone's spirits." He honestly felt the effort would be of great benefit to both the Weyr and Hold.

"Are you planning on runner races?" That was always his favorite part of any Gather.

"We must rebuild dragonkind to protect the future, so we all do what we must."

Damir raised his glass of redfruit juice to that sentiment. Between meteors and Threadfall, it seemed like they would constantly be fighting to survive.

"Well that should uplift everyone's spirits."

"That's the hope," he said thoughtfully. "I think people will work harder if they believe in the cause. It might also spark young love, which is always a good thing," he added. **Perhaps even some love for those of us who aren't quite as young as well,** he thought to himself.

"Are you planning on runner races?"

"Yes, I'm thinking Runner Races, perhaps some foot races as well, or maybe a dancing competition. Competition stirs the blood," he said. "I remember in the past learning of the games that they held during intervals, where dragons would compete. I don't know if we'd go quite that far, but perhaps a quick display of flight formations would entertain and inspire?"
