J'lor was angry.
At first he'd been angry they'd lost the flight. His hopes had been so high with the way Sivarith seemed to prefer Tonuth's company to any other dragon in the Weyr. Unreasonably high it seemed. But his reaction had been completely out of proportion to the provocation and the girl hadn't deserve what he'd done. Flight moth's were there and willing to handle the riders under a gold flights immense flightlust but what he'd done. He shook his head.
He'd tossed his table over when he got back to his weyr breaking glass and crockery in his anger. Tonuth hadn't returned yet although he could hear him and could feel the weariness in his mind voice.
That very weariness told him even more clearly how incredibly hard his lifemate had tried. Sivarith had even looked at him at the end yet still chosen a bronze.
J'lor heard the arrival as his dragon landed back in their weyr. He ran to Tonuth to reassure him of his love and pride in what he'd accomplished.
He leaned against the big brown neck reaching as far as he could and rubbed his hands over him. His own head rested against the warm hide. His own emotions stabilized as he gave himself to his most beloved friend in all the world.
Much later Tonuth lay in his couch with J'lor cradled between his forelegs and neck where it curved around to protect the man. They hadn't done this for years and neither could fathom why. Today they comforted one another and finally fell asleep just where they lay.

Roux was angry and frustrated. She had been since Radanth’s flight. K’rill had been a welcome distraction, but in the back of her mind remained this unexpressed ire. She had yet to confront J’lor. Roux knew that she needed to speak with him or she would very likely be driven mad with the venom that stirred in the pit of her stomach. The last thing this Weyr needed was another crazy female rider.
When Roux heard the results of Sivarith’s flight she could feel the emotions welling up within her once again. Radanth too, was vexed. Their age and experience helped to temper the rage and frustration they felt. But the tidal wave would not be stopped.
Once she and K’rill parted ways that evening, she made the decision to pay her former weyrmate a visit.
Climbing onto Radanth’s neck, the pair took to the air flying in a cylindrical pattern through the center of the bowl until they came rest on Tonuth’s ledge. Radanth settled down beside Tonuth and lowered her neck to give Roux an easier time sliding down. Roux marched around Tonuth and stood looking at J’lor’s empty bed. Her hands came to her hips as an exaggerated sigh of frustration left her lips.
‘He is sleeping on Tonuth.’
Roux spun on her heels, her eyes narrowing at the sleeping form lying comfortably on the big brown. “He’s asleep…” Roux muttered seethingly as she slowly walked to where he was perched on his lifemates foreleg, trodding through broken glass along the way. “Just when I know what I want to say to him, he goes to sleep.” With arms crossed around her slender waist and hip rocked to the side she stood glowering at him while her foot lightly tapped on the floor.

J’lor slept well until the dreams started.
First he was playing with N’lon when they were children running through the Weyr caverns. Spying on the latest clutch or hunting tunnel snakes. N’lon always led and J’lor followed. Then somehow Sorelle joined them and he just stopped panting and holding his knees as he watched them run away from him. Darkness descended, he was walking in the caverns by himself and she was came out of a tunnel there by his side smiling. They were at the beach and N’lon was running into the ocean. Sorelle cried but N’lon wouldn’t come back. He tried to comfort her but she kissed him then pushed him down and ran away.
Radanth and hers are here
**why?**
Anger, was all the reply he got. 'Great' he sighed knowing how she got when she was angry. It wouldn’t matter one iota that he himself was a mess at the moment. He also knew he had to open his eyes because she’d know soon enough that he was awake.
She’s been with Morisaths ‘Like that has anything to do with anything.’ He thought to himself. He didn’t have to like who she decided to bed. He didn’t open his eyes just lay there for another moment marshalling his resources to deal with Roux in a rage.
Finally, he sat up. “Hello Roux.” He said in a patient voice. “What do you want." it came out more of a statement than a question.

Roux hated when he took that sanctimonious tone with her. He may not be in the mood to ‘deal’ with her right now, but frankly, she didn’t give a shit. She had waited too long already. “I realize that you may be pouting over the loss of the flight,” she threw that aside in there in her anger, to add a little salt to the wound. “But I think it is high time we addressed the issue of your current love and how her actions and those of her dragon could have cost me EVERYTHING!”
Radanth was her everything. Roux had never found a human companion to cling to, like so many other riders had. She had never had any children. Radanth was all Roux had. Deep down, Roux knew that she was not one of those types that could survive the loss of her dragon. If anything happened to Radanth, Roux’s world would end. She would not be strong enough to carry on. Alone.
“For months that woman has been stringing you along,” she said in a calmer tone and she began to pace. “I have been there for you, J’lor. You know I have.” She stopped and looked at him to add emphasis to her words, then began pacing again. “She has put you through some very difficult and painful things. Every time you came to me, I listened, without judgment, because I care about you. I shared your pain and I shared my bed, without judgment…” Roux stopped and faced him. “Well judgment day has come,” she stated as she simultaneously pointed to the ground and stomped a foot for emphasis, her voice filled with all the emotions that were swirling around inside her. Roux had held her tongue on the subject of Sorelle for so many months that she found it difficult to start sputtering insults. Instead she held her ground and waited for J’lor’s retort.

“I realize that you may be pouting over the loss of the flight, But I think it is high time we addressed the issue of your current love and how her actions and those of her dragon could have cost me EVERYTHING!”
Tonuth lifted his head eyes whirling with worry as he watched the green rider. J’lor stood and walked past the ruins of his table. “Pouting?” he said softly. “I wouldn’t call it pouting, but whatever.”
He could understand her concern though. Radanth would have stood absolutely no chance against a riled gold. “I know.” He said without much enthusiasm.
”… I listened, without judgment, because I care about you. I shared your pain and I shared my bed, without judgment…” Roux stopped and faced him. “Well judgment day has come,”
‘Ok’ he thought, ‘she wants to vent.’ He’d felt vaguely in the past that she’d just been humoring him. She hadn't been overt about it but he'd never thought she had any use for Sorelle and what had happened in her flight had scared her. He turned and grabbed his wineskin and a glass “Want any?” he didn’t think so by the look on her face. “No?” he picked up a chair and sat, pouring himself a drink. Then he looked back at her.
“Go ahead…” he said “make my day,” And drained the glass.

Roux was not amused. J’lor was in a mood… That much was evident. But she wasn’t going to back down just because he was having a bad day. It was high time they hashed this out. So it was going to happen, even if he had gone between in thought.
“If you want to bet against Bitran, that’s your choice. I won’t stop you, J’lor. But I won’t allow that demented queenrider ruin MY life too!” Roux snagged the wineskin and poured half a glass and then downed the entire contents. “We all know that even the Weyrleader has concerns about her – or he wouldn’t have set riders to watch her day and night. That woman was born under the Red Star. It is only a matter of time before someone gets seriously hurt and by the shards of my dragon’s egg, it will NOT be me.”
Roux stood there for a moment and just stared at him. She knew him too well… there was something going on. He was barley registering anything she said. With a heavy sigh, she let her empathy get the better of her and asked, “J’lor, what in the name of the egg is bothering you?”

Roux was not amused. Usually he’d been able to charm her into pretty much anything but that was before he was in close proximity to Sorelle.
Things were convoluted and nothing made any sense to him at the moment. He’d done something today that he’d never remembered before in his life. He hardly heard her rant pretty much knowing why she was upset and the hell of it was… she was right. There was only one problem… it didn’t matter.
“…It is only a matter of time before someone gets seriously hurt and by the shards of my dragon’s egg, it will NOT be me.”
He looked up at her standing there indignant and beautiful, breathtakingly so. He didn’t blame her in the least for the way she felt about the gold rider.
“J’lor, what in the name of the egg is bothering you?”
He took a breath and then another “I did something today I don’t remember every doing before.” He he sat with his elbows on his knees and rolled the empty glass between his hands. He didn’t want to look in her eyes to see the answer to his question.
“Roux, did I ever… hurt you?”

Roux raised an eyebrow at J’lor and stood looking at him, while he continued to avert his eyes. She was puzzled by the question and it took her a moment to shift her train of thought from her ire and focus on J’lor’s inquiry.
‘Today,’ she thought. It took her a moment to put the pieces together; the flight, his loss, the effects of flightlust and his pent up frustrations with Sorelle. Grabbing a chair she pulled it around and placed it in front of J’lor and then took a seat.
Leaning forward, her elbows resting on her thighs, she considered her response carefully and then spoke softly. “Flights affect riders in different ways. One common thread is aggression. It’s present in the link with our dragons and lingers after their flight.” She knew that he knew this. But it was evident that his experience had been more extreme for him.
“J’lor, I have been a moth in many flights. The experience of a moth is very different than that of a rider in the flight. We aren’t lost in the link…” she wanted him to understand. “You have never injured me. However, many have.”

She pulled up a chair. He could tell she wasn’t afraid of him and somehow that helped ease his mind.
“Flights affect riders in different ways. One common thread is aggression. It’s present in the link with our dragons and lingers after their flight.”
His head shook minutely. “Gold is different than green…” his voice faded away for a moment.
“J’lor, I have been a moth in many flights. The experience of a moth is very different than that of a rider in the flight. We aren’t lost in the link…” she wanted him to understand. “You have never injured me. However, many have.”
“Maybe I did something today that I haven’t before yet it still distresses me. The girl was upset and crying.” He stood up and walked away scrubbing his eyes with the heels of his hands before he turned back to where she sat.
“The other thing was that during your flight, I passed out but when I woke up the moth was gone. I can’t help feeling that I must have done something similar.”
He stopped and sat back down taking her hands. “I’m sorry for what happened in your flight. I have no idea why or how it happened.” He had always thought Roux and excellent weyrmate and friend. “It it helps at all, I’m as confused by all of this as you are.”

It was evident that J’lor was deeply distressed by his behavior. Roux knew many riders who became extremely forceful and even violent during a flight. It went with the territory at times. But, J’lor had not experienced it before. That much was plain.
“J’lor, you have had to be strong for,” Roux paused before saying her name through clenched teeth, “Sorelle.” She gave her eyes a slight roll. Roux was calming down, but there was no getting past the fact that she detested the woman. “I can only imagine how difficult it has been on you. It could very well be that your reactions during the flights have been, in part, due to your walls being down. The link with our lifemates strips everything away. Puts us in an instinctual and primal state. Whatever you were holding back, you could no longer contain.”
