"I... lost everything."
Evie winced, her heart going out to the Healer. As they started to move forward again, she thought of her own family, how she didn't know for certain if her father was alive or dead. She wondered how large a family Linda had had, if she'd had any brothers or sisters. There were so many people at Dragon Hold who had lost so much... Evie wished there was a way she could help.
There was a time, it seemed so long ago now, that she could at least offer her music as a soothing distraction, if not comfort for the spirit.
"You cannot let the sadness control your life..."
Evie blinked, stunned. That was what she kept telling herself. She would find a way to be useful, to be the best she could...
"I think you're right," she said. "I... I was a Harper, before I lost my sight. Now I'm trying to make a new life for myself... though it is difficult."

Linda kept quiet, and she didn't speak up again for awhile, especially about who and what and how much she actually lost. She didn't need to go around trying to pry sympathy from others especially someone who has lost their own eyesight. It would do no good for her and she needed to concentrate still anyways to get them to the hold.
Her ears kind of perked up though when she heard Evelie finally speak up about how she was a harper beforehand. Along with how she was trying to make a new life for herself, yeah that would be very difficult. Silently she was glad she wasn't blind, but then again she would have taken that instead of loosing her siblings and their dragons.
"Yes, I am and was a Healer myself.... Shortly after I made Journeywoman and it was so close after my eighteenth turn that all this happened. I thought maybe this was the punishment of the entire Pern for letting me survive.... I lose my siblings, a few of which were dragon riders when we need them the most...."
Her voice started to grow more and more quiet until the last sentence was barely a whisper from her. More to herself then Evelie, though soon as it was out she hoped the woman didn't hear her. She blinked a few times though as she saw the hold within the distance now that they moved past the trees all of a sudden.
"There is the Hold though."

One effect Evie had noticed since becoming blind was that her other senses seemed to be getting stronger. Though it was barely a whisper, Evie still heard the last thing Linda said - "I thought maybe this was the punishment of the entire Pern for letting me survive.... I lose my siblings, a few of which were dragon riders when we need them the most...."
Evie was trying to think of something encouraging to say, something that didn't sound like false pity or just plain patronizing, something that could somehow lift Linda's spirits, but nothing came. There were probably many more who shared the same feeling...
"There is the Hold though."
"Oh!" Evie snapped out of her thoughts, "Thank you for bringing me. Ah, if you can just get me through the gate and let me know where I'm standing, I think I can find my way from here."

Linda had glanced back at Evie a few times after she spoke, but she couldn't tell if the other woman had heard the last part or not. Keep it together girl you need to keep up your good work, her words flitted through her head.
After she spoke up about the hold though it seemed the harper spoke up of her words of gratitude along with letting her know where she is standing to find her own way. Slowly she kept moving forward until she went inside of the gate and to the right of it near the wall, her eyes slowly looked around at the familiar place.
"We are right inside the hold, just right from the gate, to the left if you were going out though if that helps.... But at least you are safe now and I should probably go look for more herbs to help with the healers. If you need me again I am sure you can find someone to get me though... and here."
Linda slowly lifted up Evie's and pulled slowly towards the wall to help the woman place her hand on it. Now she wouldn't get lost if she just followed the walls right? "Take care of yourself." Linda managed to speak out before she headed back out of the hold and towards the forest again.

Evie nodded as she listened to Linda's description of where they stood. She could find her way from here... probably.
She grinned a little as she felt her hand being lifted, the familiar touch of stone beneath her fingers. They were getting to be good friends, the walls of the Hold and herself.
"Take care of yourself."
"I'll do my best," Evie said towards the sound of retreating footsteps... then she was alone again. She felt it, more than heard it.
With a sigh, Evie slowly started to make her way along the wall.
End Evelie
