Month 11, day 3, late evening
Maram, feeling utterly spent and exhausted, sat at the table in her chambers sipping a cup of Klah. Where had these last months gone? So much had happened and she felt almost as though she'd missed it all she'd been so busy.
Trying to start fresh was far harder than she would ever have imagined. It was bad enough that she and R'enh had hardly seen much of each other in days as they passed, both too busy with their own errands to have time to spend together.
Most nights of late, Maram collapsed into bed. When morning came she wasn't much better. Even Chalarath had commented that she'd been pushing herself too much and she needed to relax.
So, Maram found herself alone in her weyr, trying to let the stress of life eek from her aching muscles. Chalarath already snored happily on her mat, and Maram couldn't help but gaze lovingly at her gold.
Sipping from her cup once more, Maram considered turning in early and perhaps feeling more awake come the morning.

“Maram, I brought someone with me for dinner.”
He pointed to another door with his head as he pulled off his jacket and hung it on a hook. “You can wash up in there.”
~*~
He found her sitting at the table with a cup of klah. “Well you look exhausted.” He said before turning to bow to the beautiful gold Chalarath.
He ran a hand over Maram’s hair and bent to kiss her softly. “You look like you could use some rest.” He looked at her a bit concerned. “Maybe this wasn’t such a good idea,” he murmured.
For the moment they were alone. He said in the chair next to her and leaned on the table. “I met someone today that I didn’t know existed.” He gave her half a smile. He wasn’t worried that the news would bother her, she was a dragon rider and knew the ways of the weyr. “I don’t quite know how he’s going to feel about it though.”
He picked up a bowl and dished up some of the stew and tubers for himself. “Have you eaten already?” he asked.

"R'enh," Maram said with a smile, accepting the kiss he offered her. She blinked. She knew she was tired, but to have it mentioned to her made it only that much clearer.
"I've not slept as much in the past sennight. Between helping the Healers with those injured during the last Threadfall, and trying to track down what's happening to our supplies." She ran a hand through her hair. "Did I tell you that another bushel seems to have gone missing again?" She sighed again.
"Did you say something about bringing someone with you?" Maram asked, blinking as she finally registered what she'd heard before. She looked around, but didn't see anyone else. Was she imagining things now too?
"I meant to eat, I just...forgot." She'd been so engrossed in the numbers from the kitchens that she'd totally left her meal untouched. How could they have been missing so much? Something was just not adding up.

"Did I tell you that another bushel seems to have gone missing again?"
Zorenh lingered just out of view as he tucked in his shirt. Things were missing in the Weyr? He thought for a moment. Hadn't his foster mother just reprimanded him this morning for taking the last of the jam? It had been a huge vat of the stuff and there was no way one person could have eaten it all in one sitting. However, he still got punished, much to the happiness of his 'brothers'. Of course... the ride on Mnoranth had been more than enough compensation. As he passed the dragon's couch, he said, "thanks for the ride."
"Did you say something about bringing someone with you?"
"Just me, my Lady," Zorenh said as he entered the kitchen and bowed slightly. "That is, if it's all right with you."
She was just as gorgeous as he had heard. R'enh certainly had the life. Best weyr, best woman, best dragon. It was no wonder he didn't care for his offspring.

"Another one? That's not good." he said with a frown "We're going to have to find out how all these supplies are disappearing and where they're going. We don't have a lot of wiggle room."
R'enh smiled when Zorenh came into the room. Of course Mnoranth had passed on the boys thanks as he'd walked by the big bronze.
"Just me, my Lady, That is, if it's all right with you." he said with a bow.
He was glad to see the young man knew his manners.
"We just met this afternoon down by the lake." he said "Maram this is Zorenh." then turning to his son "Zorenh, this is Maram our Weyrwoman."
"Come on and grab a bowl, it's still hot." he said and reached for a hot roll to dunk in the hot mixture.
"Zorenh comes from Ista." he said before taking a bite of the fresh bread. Zoom appeared out of thin air and landed on this shoulder. R'enh took the lid off a small bowl of meat and lifted a small piece within reach of the Crimson firelizard. Then he moved the bowl down the big table a ways where the little guy could make his mess without bothering anyone.
Chirps and buzzes followed while he stuffed himself and R'enh laughed at the crimson's antics.
Then when there was a lull in the conversation he asked as casually as possible. "So how did you get searched Zorenh?" While the kid had been stiff and withdrawn even angry at times it had seemed to R'enh he'd loosened up a bit over the last while. Maybe talking about his experience would bring him out of his shell a little.

"Maram this is Zorenh. Zorenh, this is Maram our Weyrwoman."
As if she needed any introduction. R'enh instructed him to begin eating, so he walked over and picked up a bowl and began spooning the hot food into it. It smelled good. Better than anything he had ever smelled before. He wondered if it was due to the after-flight exhilaration, or if Maram had a very skilled cook. He started to salivate from the wonderful aroma.
"Zorenh comes from Ista."
Just as he swallowed, those words came from R'enh and Zorehn started coughing. His eyes flashed to the dragonrider. How did he know where he had come from? Zorenh frowned as he finished filling his bowl and sat down at the table. A fiery flash zipped past his face and he leaned instinctively backwards. The firelizard pounced on the food R'enh had slid toward it and Zorenh smiled at the silly thing.
"So how did you get searched Zorenh?"
He had just shoved half a roll into his mouth. "I--" He looked at Maram and decided it would be wise not to talk with his mouth full. Holding up his hand, he chewed quickly and swallowed several times. "Sorry." He put his hands on his lap to prevent him from shoving more food into his mouth until he was done talking. His eyes were still on Maram. "When Chalarath rose, I was Searched. I think they got it wrong, but R'enh says they never make mistakes. My mom always told me I was a waste of a good ride and that I'd never be anything more than a drain on the Weyr. His hand came off of his lap and he touched the rim of the bowl, but put his hand back quickly. He lowered his eyes, "of course, I was passed over. Your Chalarath's children deserve better."

Xanthe walked up the stairs toward the Weyrwoman’s chambers. The two of them needed to discuss the issues with the missing kitchen stores. Xanthe had searched high and low for the supplies that were unaccounted for. After exhausting all other possibilities, she could think of no other options then the least palatable one – thievery.
Upon reaching the Weyrwoman’s weyr, Xanthe entered ad stopped in her tracks at the sound of voices. She would have simply slipped out, but she was well within view of the Weyrleaders and their guest.
“I am sorry, Lady Maram,” Xanthe said apologetically and gave a deferential nod. “I must have misunderstood our conversation. I didn’t realize that you had company or I would not have presumed to intrude.” She took a step back. Xanthe thought Maram had said to meet her this evening. But with all the chaos recently it did not surprise her that she had gotten her appointments mixed up.

Maram looked up the moment she heard the other voice. Her eyes fell on the face of the young man and something in that face struck her as familiar. Perhaps it was just that she had seen him around before, though she couldn't recall that specfifically.
"Zorenh, welcome. If R'enh has invited you to be our guest, then I am pleased as well." She turned and smiled at R'enh, wondering why he had chosen to bring a guest...someone he'd just met to their Weyr for dinner. There was still so much about the bronzerider that surprised her, even now, months after they'd been leading the Weyr together.
"Zorenh, if a dragon Searched you, then trust me when I tell you that you would have been a worthy candidate for any of Chalarath's young ones. Dragons have a strange sense of knowing within them. The can tell when someone is special." Before he had a chance to reply to her words, another voice broke into the pause in the room.
"I must have misunderstood our conversation. I didn’t realize that you had company or I would not have presumed to intrude.”
Maram turned and smiled towards the Headwoman. "Xanthe. I did ask you to come. I'm so sorry. I didn't expect to have company tonight. Do you think we could meet in the morning? The business I have can wait until then."
She turned back and looked at the two handsome men that graced the weyr. There was something oddly similar about them both. Maram actually blinked and then the strange image was gone. "I've some very pleasant company to dine with this evening now." She looked back to Xanthe. "Could you check the supplies and count the barrels and stock when you get a chance. I'm afraid another bushel of wheat has turned up missing. We can discuss it more in the morning."

R’enh was watching the young man without appearing to, but when he mentioned his mother his head swiveled
”My mom always told me I was a waste of a good ride and that I'd never be anything more than a drain on the Weyr. Of course, I was passed over. Your Chalarath's children deserve better."
It was as if a fireball lit behind his eyes. First she denied him the knowledge that he had a son? Then she abused the boy? If R’enh had been able to get his hands on Zora at that point in time there was no telling what he would have done to the woman, dragonrider or no. They’d warned him about her at Ista, he even thought now the other dragons had let Mnoranth win because they knew he wouldn’t be staying. He closed his eyes for a second, no one had the right to say that to a child. If she didn’t want to raise him herself, she’d only had to say the word and he could have been fostered or R’enh would have taken the kid with him to Benden. He didn’t even hear what Maram said to the young man.
The headwoman appeared and R’enh smoothed out his expression, there was no call for her to see the towering inferno that burned in his gut at that moment. He could have flamed thread himself without the aid of Mnoranth.
“I am sorry, Lady Maram,” Xanthe said apologetically and gave a deferential nod. “I must have misunderstood our conversation. I didn’t realize that you had company or I would not have presumed to intrude.”
Then he realized there was something he COULD do for his son right now.
"I've some very pleasant company to dine with this evening now." She looked back to Xanthe. "Could you check the supplies and count the barrels and stock when you get a chance. I'm afraid another bushel of wheat has turned up missing. We can discuss it more in the morning."
R’enh forced a welcoming smile for the Headwoman. “You’re welcome to join us if you wish Xanthe.” And he meant it, if he was going to do this, more than one witness wasn’t a bad thing.
His lip twitched at the look Maram had given him and Zorenh. If she saw the resemblance, so much the better for the boy.
Then he stood and with a formal tone in his voice. “Weyrwoman, I wish to make an entry into your records of this weyr. Today I have discovered a relationship I did not know existed before this day.” He dropped a hand on Zorenh’s shoulder.
“I have a son named Zorenh. I would like his name entered in your rolls acknowledged by me.”

A flash of emotion from R'enh caused Zorenh to frown in confusion, but it was quickly forgotten as a woman entered the room and Maram told her they should postpone their meeting. He thought several times of interrupting and saying he could go, but the smell of his meal made him mute.
"I'm afraid another bushel of wheat has turned up missing."
Oh, how he wanted to reply to that. He bit the inside of his cheeks almost to the point of drawing blood.
“You’re welcome to join us if you wish Xanthe.”
R'enh's voice caused Zorenh to look up from his bowl and he scooted over to make room for Xanthe should she decide to take the dragonrider up on the offer. "The food is really good," Zorenh added.
“Weyrwoman, I wish to make an entry into your records of this weyr. Today I have discovered a relationship I did not know existed before this day.”
What? Zorenh looked up at him.
“I have a son named Zorenh. I would like his name entered in your rolls acknowledged by me.”
Astonishment filled his eyes and he tried to stand, but R'ehn's strong hand held him in place, almost as if he knew the boy would try to run. A thousand emotions swept through Zorenh's mind like lightning and he was hard pressed to get a bead on any of them and make them stick. He could deny it, say it wasn't true, that R'enh was mistaken. However, the exhilaration that still remained from the flight with R'enh was still strong, as was the kindness the man had shown him by not embarrassing him in front of the others after the flight. Zorenh knew better than most, though, that anyone could be nice if it suited their needs. How would R'enh benefit from this? What would he get out of it? Try as he might, Zorenh could not come up with an angle that threw the man in a bad light. He looked up at R'enh again and saw the determination on the face of the Weyrleader. This was not just a casual decision. Once it was entered into the rolls, it would be there for all Turns. He would be the son of R'enh. Son of a bronzerider. Son of the Weyrleader. No. All that didn't matter. What mattered, was that he would be someone's son. He swallowed once, then cleared his throat, but words just didn't come...

His son? Maram looked between the pair, her mouth opened slightly at the revelation, before a smile graced her lips.
"It will be so recorded. Zorenh son of R'enh, rider of bronze Mnoranth is hereby claimed and acknowledged." A hint of jealousy swept through her, but she quickly squashed it. She was not jealous of Zorenh, no, in fact, she was pleased for him. It was the thought that someone else had gifted R'enh with such a son and not her.
"Zorenh, as son of R'enh you are welcome at our table anytime," Maram looked the young man in the eye as she spoke. She was curious about his mother, but she would save that for later as she didn't feel it was the best time for those questions. Her eyes, however, held the many questions she longed to ask as she looked to R'enh.
Maram had noticed that Xanthe had remained, but stayed quietly off to the side even after the invitation. "Xanthe, as already suggested, you are welcome to join us if you so choose."
"Now, then, Zorenh, as Weyrwoman of Dragon Weyr, I must say you have a magnificent father," That was when Maram knew she, too, wished that R'enh would be the father of her child. She had seen the way he cared for his children and his actions here with Zorenh only proved them to her.
That was also something better left for thought and discussion later for it was not quite the conversation to have with guests around.

"I've some very pleasant company to dine with this evening now." She looked back to Xanthe. "Could you check the supplies and count the barrels and stock when you get a chance. I'm afraid another bushel of wheat has turned up missing. We can discuss it more in the morning."
“Certainly, m’lady,” Xanthe said and gave the Weyrwoman a ceremonial curtsey. These missing supplies were going to drive her mad. Why and how was this happening? They had to get to the bottom of this mystery.
“You’re welcome to join us if you wish Xanthe.”
Xanthe gave the Weyrleader a pleasant smile. Not wanting to seem rude by turning down such an estimable offer, she moved to take the offered place at the table, but hesitated when the Weyrleader began to speak.
“Weyrwoman, I wish to make an entry into your records of this weyr. Today I have discovered a relationship I did not know existed before this day. I have a son named Zorenh. I would like his name entered in your rolls acknowledged by me.”
Xanthe smiled from ear to ear and looked from the Weyrleader to his son. She had spent a good portion of her life finding fosterers for the children of dragonriders. Too many of whom, never acknowledge their offspring. It was heartwarming o see R’ehn recognize Zorenh in such a formal way. Xanthe had a soft spot for these fosterlings. It could be such a difficult life. Feeling uplifted by being part of this momentous occasion, Xanthe let her emotions get the better of her and she stepped forward to give the young man a motherly pat on the shoulder.
At the Weyrwoman's confirmation, Xanthe took a seat at the table. This was truly a lovely happenstance, that she should arrive and be allowed to stay and serve as witness. What a beautiful evening. Xanthe could not have agreed more with the Weyrwoman, R'ehn was shapping up to be a magnificent man.

A half a smile crooked his lips as he looked down into his son’s face. He felt Zorenh try to rise. Claiming his blood was important to him personally but it was also necessary to keep the bloodlines recorded for both dragon kind and human kind. They had few enough bloodlines to reestablish both. He couldn’t tell anyone how many nights that fact bothered him. In another generation Zorenh’s children and Renhick’s should not breed, they were brothers.
As much as it pained him he _had_ thought about removing Mnoranth from Chalarath’s next flight, but Sivarith’s flight by Imahyth had brought a completely different bloodline into the Weyr and lifted that need.
He looked back to Maram and saw the stunned look that pretty much reflected how he felt when he’d realized exactly who Zorenh was. It was quickly replaced by a welcoming smile.
"Zorenh, as son of R'enh you are welcome at our table anytime,"
He smiled his thanks at her welcome and knew they would speak later when there were no eyes around. Though from her reaction she seemed ok with it; he didn’t habitually spring surprises on the Weyrwoman.
"Now, then, Zorenh, as Weyrwoman of Dragon Weyr, I must say you have a magnificent father,"
R’enh’s color rose slightly he had no thought of anything but his son in this. He didn’t know quite what to say. He hadn’t wanted personal praise for doing something for his child that would have been done long ago if he’d known.
For once in his life he was bereft of words to respond to her praise. He looked at the head woman and knew his son would at least find an ally in the lower caverns. That was all he’d wanted to accomplish.
His knees suddenly felt a little wobbly and he sat back down and tried to change the subject.
“So what’s for dessert?”

Maram was quite pleased by the little company that had gathered to share the meal with her. She'd been so caught up in other things of late that she felt she hardly had time for the people any longer.
"Now that that's all settled," she smiled to her guests, "let's eat, shall we?" Maram, acting as the hostess, made sure everyone had food and drink before she sat down once again.
"I feel that all of us," she gestured to the group around the table, "have hardly had a chance to get to know one another, really, truly get to know one another, and I think that that is vital for us all to work well together and," she smiled at Zorenh, "to live amonst each other. I think it would be great if we shared something about ourselves with one another. As Weyrwoman I'll start."
Taking a bite of her food and swallowing, she looked to those around her. R'enh probably knew her best, though there were things even he did not know about her past. It was not something they dwelt on much in conversation with the everyday needs of the Weyr to see to.
"Have you ever had someone not believe in you?" She asked them all, looking and meeting each of their gazes, pausing overlong when she looked at Zorehn. Something about his earlier actions had led her to share this part of her life. "I know what that is like. It is not the way to live and breathe. Back at Igen, I was not looked upon the way I am here. Even the rider who won Chalarath's Flight regarding my decisions as second best. It was almost like being suffocated by the people around you." She paused and looked to R'enh. She had not really told him all that much about her time at Igen. Maram wasn't even sure why she brought it up now, but something in her gut told her it was the right time.
"Yet, look at me now," she grinned broadly. "One thing that life has shown me is that we make our own paths and it does not matter what was in the past. It is the present we make for ourselves that truly matters." She dipped her bread into her stew and looked around those gathered again. "Perhaps I should have just told you about my parents instead." She laughed. "I didn't mean to be so philosophical! Now, I would love it if each of you in turn shared something about yourselves with us."

"Zorenh, as son of R'enh you are welcome at our table anytime."
He squirmed in his chair, feeling rather uncomfortable at all the attention. He toyed with the piece of bread in his hand. "Thanks," he said.
"Now, then, Zorenh, as Weyrwoman of Dragon Weyr, I must say you have a magnificent father."
R'enh's face colored crimson and Zorenh chuckled. It was nice to see the discomfort spread instead of focused on himself.
“So what’s for dessert?”
"Nice cover," Zorenh said quietly, a broad smile on his face.
"I think it would be great if we shared something about ourselves with one another.
What? Triple shards! He squirmed again, suddenly reminded of the day he had joined his foster mother's family. As Maram continued to talk, Zorenh tried to figure out what to say. Sighing, he listened to the Weyrwoman, hoping something she would say would help him figure out something for when it was his turn.
"...we make our own paths and it does not matter what was in the past. It is the present we make for ourselves that truly matters."
"Dragon droppings," he thought to himself. "What a load of--"
"Now, I would love it if each of you in turn shared something about yourselves with us."
"Me?" Ack. "I'm..." He looked at R'enh. "I'm not really that interesting." There was a silence, almost as if they were forcing him to add something else. "I guess I know how to use a knife well." Lame.
