Tobias stood up from the table he'd been working at to stretch his back. He blinked, not even sure how long he'd been concentrating on the task. It wasn't even one of the more detailed, precision pieces he had been used to back at the Crafthall before the disaster, but with so few trained hands, Tobias had had to take the time to show the new apprentice exactly how to measure and cut the leather to size.
They didn't have much to spare until they were able to build up a stockpile of leathers. Until then, every piece was valuable.
"You did good," Tobias told the youngster with a pat on the back. "Now, if you can finish the cutting, I can see to some other important tasks." When the young apprentice nodded, Tobias turned to survey the others hard at work in the crafthall.

Lilia was looking for one of the Journeymen leather workers. She had a set of drums that needed new heads and they didn’t have a drummer able to stretch his own let alone tune them.
She shook her head at the losses the Harper hall had taken as had everyone around. All the crafts were wanting.
Luckily she had perfect pitch and would be able to help the Tanners tune the drums once they had new heads.
She wasn’t really looking around the room when she walked in.
“Excuse me,” she said to the back of one of the men in the room and then suddenly jumped back as a little green firelizard burst into being in front of her.
She squealed as the little thing chattered at her. She hadn’t seen this one before but she seemed a little hyper. Lilia had no fear of dragons but she didn’t know about their little cousins.

Leatherell inspected the containers he had been working with the day before. Each had a hide soaking in a brain solution and had to be soaking overnight. These now had to have the solution wrung out of them so they could be softened. Leatherell hadn't yet grown used to the scent of the brain mixture, some of which had been mixed just days before. He doubted he ever would. For now, he'd just hold his breath with the newer mixed solutions. The older, smoky smelling solutions would be easier to manage.
Wringing out the first hide of the day, he began to work it over with a bit of rope over the hide for a few minutes before he went on to the next one. Periodically he checked the hides to see if they were soft. He didn't want to be scolded over overworking a hide again. He looked up as a girl squealed at the sight of a firelizard. He laughed. "It's just a firelizard," he told her. "Something I can help you with?" he added in his shy sounding voice. Sometimes he really hated sounding so timid.

Tobias turned from his task at the sound of the feminine voice. Truth be told there were not all that many females in the Tannery.
Before he had a chance to reply, he watched as one of his Journeyman, one he was still getting to know, addressed her to see what she needed.
"Beauty. Come back here now," Tobias scolded his little firelizard. She turned and with a chirping sound of annoyance at being reprimanded, sailed back to his shoulder. Attaching herself to the leather pad he wore there to protect against her talons.
He reached a hand up to pet her head soothing, "You can't go scaring off our customers now, my little sweet." Beauty purred her apology and nuzzled into Tobias' neck.
Turning towards Lilia and Leatherell he spoke, "Master Harper Lilia, I believe. I see you've met my Journeyman Leatherell. What can we do for you today?"

"It's just a firelizard," he told her. "Something I can help you with?"
She’d started to respond to the Journeyman when the little green darted at her.
"Beauty. Come back here now,"
Her eyes darted to the big man coming toward her and then watched as the little green responded and flew back to him and seemed to caress him with her entire body. Lilia smiled suddenly a bit ashamed after having been so startled by the little thing.
"Master Harper Lilia, I believe. I see you've met my Journeyman Leatherell. What can we do for you today?"
She looked kindly back at the journeyman. “Thank you Leatherell” she said.
“I need some skins suitable for making drums.” She said. “I can teach them the rudimentaries of creating their instruments, but I will need a good stack of appropriate skins.” She smiled up at the big tanner. “I can teach them to stretch and tune them but I can’t do the tanning.”
“Do you think you’d have anything like that, a bit larger than this drum?” she offered the instrument.

"I think we can handle that, as long as you help us." Tobias answered her. He called over another of his Journeyman as he knew the job Leatherell was doing was too important for them to stop at this time.
After explaining to the Journeyman what they had in mind and sending Lilia off to work with him, Tobias went back to his own task that needed to be completed before the days end.
