She almost skipped across the weyr bowl toward the kitchen. She was so happy even though she was scared at the same time.
The splint had come off her arm today and when she'd visited the infirmary she'd had them check something else as well. She grinned still holding her secret to herself. She looked at her hand opening and closing it and turning her arm so glad to be free of the bulky splint and wrappings.
Alorath sailed over her head, she was coming along well too. She could glide without pain to the feeding grounds now. She smiled even wider than she had before.
Soon she was crossing the bowl back to her weyr with a tray for a private dinner this evening with the big Tanner.
He was off at his well established Tannery and he'd be arriving back home quite soon. Quite a few of the dragon riders were giving him rides back and forth to the location in hopes of scoring some of his amazing leather work.
She set up the meal on the table and scattered a few glows under a flowering centerpiece she'd assembled. It threw light attractively through it's leaves and around the room.
She had a new soft white gown that had come from the loom of one of the weavers the soft fabric was almost translucent. She smiled at the thought of his eyes when he finally saw her in it… It would be special.
She took off down the corridor to the bathing room and swam around in the heated water a few minutes before washing. A drying cloth clutched around her frame as she came back to the weyr.
Alorath was already back and asleep on her couch when Chloe got back. She donned the new dress, belting it with a beautiful wide peaked belt Tobias had made and tooled for her as a gift. Then flipped her hair over and rubbed it dry near the brazier until it floated around her shoulders.

R’enh had oiled Mnoranth earlier that day and when he went to work on his harness afterword he found a crack in one of his cargo straps. He removed it from the harness, it would not be a good idea to strap on a bag of firestone only to have it drop on someone’s head.
He knew he needed to talk to the Tobias if he could or get ahold of one of his Journeymen for the repair. Then he remembered Alorath’s injury and decided to kill two birds with one stone. He wanted Chloe back in his wing’s lineup sooner rather than later. She was an experienced and competent rider. If Alorath was healed enough from her injury she could begin training again soon.
He walked across the weyrbowl and up to the weyr Mnoranth had told him belonged to the dainty green.
“Chloe? Tobias?” he called as he entered. He nodded to the pretty green when she opened a swirling sleepy eye at him as he passed. R’enh had seen the two of them together quite frequently and she seemed quite happily living with the big Tanner. He was quite glad for her. She’d been a very pleasant weyrmate for the time they’d been together.
Then he caught sight of her in a pretty white gown, drying her hair.
He chuckled “Well, hello there Chloe”

“Well, hello there Chloe”
She jumped at the sound of the familiar voice. “Why didn’t you tell me he was coming” she accused the green followed with a “Hello R’enh” she didn’t feel the need to salute in her own quarters. Besides… it was R’enh.
“We already know this one well” she heard the smug tone of her dragon. She could tell the green wouldn’t mind another dalliance with Mnoranth “I don’t think that Chalarath is going to allow that dearest” she sent in an acid tone. “I’m sorry” she sent immediately after apologizing for her bit of pique.
Her thoughts came back to R’enh. “Do you need something?” she asked remembering the chuckle and his tone she looked down and realized what she was wearing.
“Nothing you haven’t seen before” she said “And besides you’ve got your own.”
She held the drying cloth strategically. She’d seen him with Maram and knew where his heart lay. There was a time several months ago when she’d briefly been sad he’d never looked at her the way he looked at the Weyrwoman. But then she’d caught a look from Tobias that took her breath away and her thoughts had completely changed.
She knew exactly where she wanted to be, doubly more now, but she hugged that secret to herself. Tobias would be the first to know.

“Do you need something?”
He chuckled again Chloe was all woman and there’d been a time when he’d enjoyed her form so charmingly clouded at the moment.
“Nothing you haven’t seen before” she said “And besides you’ve got your own.”
“Mmhmm” he mused enjoying the view nevertheless. What man wouldn’t, she was a lovely woman.
“I actually came to see both of you.” he started. He held up the broken strap. “I need his expertise.” He smiled “And I came to see how you and Alorath were doing. I could use you back in the wing as soon as you’re feeling up to it.”
The way she was holding the cloth in front of her told him that she was unavailable and he nodded. Good for her and lucky Tobias if he knew what he had.
He leaned forward and looked at her seriously. “How is he going to handle it when she rises?” he asked.

“How is he going to handle it when she rises?”
Her eyes spoke her doubt. “I… I don’t really know.” She said “we’ve talked and he says he knows but… it’s hard to tell.” She smiled a bit. “I guess we’ll just have to wait and see.”
Thankfully Alorath wasn’t showing signs of being proddy nor was her color heightened at all. She was thankful it hadn’t happened yet, most likely because of her broken wing spar.
“She’s not looking like she’s going to rise soon, so hopefully we’ll be fine a while longer. I certainly hope so.”
She didn’t know what she was going to do when the green finally did rise but she also knew she didn’t have much of a choice.
“Look, I know we’re just guessing here. But I was hold raised, I know what it was like that first time for me.” She looked at her hands, thankfully the Weyrleader hadn’t been her first time… that would have killed her she was sure.
“I’m so glad I found Tobias.” She said directly into his eyes. “and you found Maram.”

Tobias climbed a bit wearily up the stairs to his and Chloe's weyr. He hadn't wanted to trouble any of the riders to give him a life, but it had been a long, tiring day. The tannery was now in full swing and he was working to train up a few new apprentices and journeyman as fast as possible as he needed every hand he could get to cure the hides and craft the simple, everyday elements that were in dire need.
Tobias had already dunked into the waters by the new tannery, but they hardly held a candle to the warm bath waters of the Weyr. Yet, he hated to come home smelling so strongly of his work. Even still, the scent was still there, but it was fainter than when he'd finished his tasks for the day.
He emerged just into the entryway of the weyr in time to hear Chloe speaking with someone. A man. He paused.
“Look, I know we’re just guessing here. But I was hold raised, I know what it was like that first time for me.”
He froze. The implications of those words seemed to wash over him. Had he been wrong about Chloe? He knew she was a rider and they were often more...promiscuous, but she had assured him that aside from Alorath's mating flights that she wasn't like that. Tobias felt almost like a heavy weight had nearly knocked him to the ground. Yet, her next words, seemed to lift that very same weight.
“I’m so glad I found Tobias and you found Maram.”
Relief washed over him. Straightening himself, Tobias left the shadows and entered the weyr.
"My lord," he said, inclining his head towards R'enh. He was still far to accustomed to the titles he knew were deserved by the Weyrwoman and Weyrleader, yet so uncomfortable with his own new title.
"Chloe," he said, his eyes softening as he looked in her direction. Taking in her white dress, Tobias felt the blood rush to a rather eager part of his anatomy. The only thing missing was that he could not have her to himself, all alone, in this moment. Instead, he saw that she had covered herself in a manner as she spoke with the Weyrleader.
Tobias couldn't help himself, he walked closer so he stood near to her. Looking between them both his eyes shining with kindness and not suspicion he spoke, "I hope I'm not interrupting. What brings you here, My Lord?"

“She’s not looking like she’s going to rise soon, so hopefully we’ll be fine a while longer. I certainly hope so.”
He watched her face, and it appeared she cared about Tobias. “You can’t ignore it Chloe, it’s not going away, but you know that.” He shook his head “Alright you do what you think best then.” She confirmed it with her direct statement about Maram and Tobias. She was right.
"My lord,"
The big Tanner entered and he realized this was a bit compromising for Chloe. He didn’t want that in the least. He rose and reach to clasp the mans hand and returned the nod “My lord.”
"I hope I'm not interrupting. What brings you here, My Lord?"
“I came to see if I could borrow your expertise. I am able to repair my own straps but this one is too far gone” and he handed over the offending piece hoping the man would just hand it off to an assistant.
“I also was checking on Chloe and Alorath to see when they’d be released to rejoin the wing.” He watched the man look at his former weyrmate and suddenly felt he was intruding on a private moment.
“Well,” he said “I guess that’s it, check with the healers and let me know… ok Chloe?”
He turned away a little uncomfortable still and walked out of the weyr.

Nothing against R’enh but he’d never made her feel like Tobias did. Maybe it was the dragon rider thing that never let you just commit to another but Tobias was different.
"My lord," the mellow baritone caused her heart to skip a beat and her eyes light up. She heard R’enh continue talking but she didn’t really hear what he said.
"Chloe," and how she wanted to drop the drying cloth and watch his eyes turn to flame. He did move closer and her eyelids drooped sensuously. He turned back toward the Weyrleader.
"I hope I'm not interrupting. What brings you here, My Lord?"
He explained his reasons for being there but until she heard her name she wasn’t really listening anymore. She moved closer to Tobias looking up at him and her hand slipped into his. She could smell a bit of the tannery on him but it wasn’t overpowering. He was pretty careful about that.
”… ok Chloe? she nodded a bit absent minded and only noticed his retreating back a moment later.
She turned back to Tobias and dropping the cloth slipped her arms around his waist.
“Welcome home.” She said with a tiny smile.

Tobias couldn't say he was sorry when R'enh was gone, especially when he saw what gift Chloe had to offer him. Tobias' eyes lit with an intense interest.
He stepped closer, and reached his arms up and placed them onto her arms.
"Oh, Chloe," Tobias breathed, before he pulled her towards him and bent down to capture her lips with his own. His hands caressed her back as he held her to him.
"You've granted me quite a welcome home gift," he murmured as his kisses trailed along her neck.

She laughed and pulled a wandering hand away from where it was wandering to try to get him to the table. “mmhmm” she said against his lips. “You can unwrap it later.” She shivered a bit as his lips traveled down her neck.
She pulled away and grabbed his hand. “Come on, your dinner is getting cold.” She grinned she wanted him to eat before they used any more energy. He looked absolutely bushed.
“You look tired,” she said. His deep blue eyes were hiding under the brim of his hat so she tried to grab it off of his head as she pulled him toward the table.
“Rough day?”

His mouth puckered into a bit of a playful frown when she kept him from what he sought, but his eyes still held a hint of amusement. It was all part of the playful banter they shared and that made him feel so alive each morning when he awoke by her side.
With his hat no longer hiding his features, Tobias ran his fingers through his hair and sighed a bit. "Yeah, it was not one of our easiest days. We worked hard to get the new hides prepared, and to get enough leather to keep the riders safe in their harnesses. With so many untrained hands, whose help we couldn't do without, it just takes a lot longer to get things done."
The scent of the meal reached his nose and Tobias didn't argue as Chloe all but pushed him down into the seat. For the next few moments he was silent as he spooned food into his mouth. His stomach rumbled in agreement. Had he even eaten a mid-day meal? His brows furrowed in thought as he realized he couldn't recall one.
Finally, having satisfied the ravenous hunger, Tobias turned his gaze back to Chloe. "How was your day, my sweet one?"

"Yeah, it was not one of our easiest days. We worked hard to get the new hides prepared, and to get enough leather to keep the riders safe in their harnesses. With so many untrained hands, whose help we couldn't do without, it just takes a lot longer to get things done."
There was no doubt this man was a hard worker. He spent endless hours in his craft. As a Master he should have had countless Journeymen to teach the apprentices, yet there he was teaching the beginners from the ground up. He never shirked his work off onto others.
As they finished the meal, she picked up her glass of wine smiling a secret smile.
"How was your day, my sweet one?"
“It was great. I went and saw Master Garion and my arm is almost well.” She swirled the wine in her glass and took a final sip. “Alorath is flying and it looks like we can begin training again.”
“But there was something else.” She sat forward looking over the glows into his eyes. “We’ve been together exclusively since the escape.” She started. Her heart was full and she wanted him now more than ever.
She rose and moved around the table and sat sideways in the big man’s lap. Her arm went around the back of his neck and her hand to the side of his face.
“Tobias,” she said with a soft smile “You’re going to be a father.”

Tobias sat back in his seat as he sipped his wine. He listened as Chole spoke.
A smile forming on his lips as she spoke of her healing and Alorath’s as well. Tobias was pleased, and he knew Chloe was as well.
“But there was something else.”
Something in her tone drew his attention like a moth to a flame. He felt his heart rate increase. “We’ve been together exclusively since the escape.” This was not at all what he had expected to be discussing. Why was she telling him this? Did she mean to end their time? Tobias felt almost as though his world was closing in around him, crushing him, in that single moment of thought.
“You’re going to be a father.”
He blinked, his jaw dropping as he stared at her. The sudden change from what he had been thinking to this news had taken him completely by surprise. As the news sank in, a slow smile started to form on his lips as his hands encircled her waist.
“A father?” He asked with a hint of astonishment and awe. “A father!” He repeated again, his arms squeezed her tightly to him as the true joy this news brought finally showed on his face.
“I’ve always wanted a family…just never thought I’d have one of my own. Oh Chloe,” Tobias moved so his mouth captured hers. He showed her with his tongue just how pleased he was with her news.

She’d seen the tightening around his eyes when she started and she didn’t have the heart to extend her tease like she’d planned. She’d discovered something over the last days he’d been away at the crafthall.
The surprise on his face at her gentle words was worth every moment she’d kept the secret close to her heart. She had to be certain she was going to be able to carry the child before she told him.
“A father? A father!”
His big arms tightened around her as joy lit his eyes and flamed in her heart. She’d hoped, no thought he’d be happy. Their passion had kindled new life inside her, life that Pern needed.
“I’ve always wanted a family…just never thought I’d have one of my own. Oh Chloe,”
His demanding kiss swept her away as it had every time since the very first time she’d tasted them. In a way she was grateful to the disaster that had befallen the planet. She’d never have met Tobias if it weren’t for the panicked escape and the grief she’d felt that night on the island. His big heart had reached out to her and their shared grief had led to something much more profound than she’d ever expected.
She couldn’t help it, she blurted out the words she’d been saving for this moment. “I love you Tobias.”

“I love you Tobias.”
Tobias drew in a breath at her words. Pulling back, his hands cradling her face, he gazed into her eyes.
"I love you too, Chloe. So much that I can't imagine life without you."
This time when he took her lips, the kiss was gentler, softer, expressing the depth of his love for the woman in his arms. If things had been different he would have asked her to be his wife in every way. Tobias knew, however, that her status of rider, denied them that official joining.
"I want to be yours forever more, Chloe," his whispered, the words his own vow of joining. In that moment, Tobias did not think anything could ever take him from her side. Ever. Yet only time would tell how their relationship would progress. None of that mattered to him now as he showed his love to her in more ways than one.
