Sorelle had risen late and was surprised to see that Sivarith was already gone from the Weyr. Usually the large dragon made no attempt to keep quiet, but this morning either she had taken pity on Sorelle's need for sleep, or Sorelle had been too tired to notice the ruckus. Rubbing the sleep from her eyes, the short woman slipped out of bed and padded back to the table that had become her main reason for being. Strewn across it were piles upon piles of documents, as well as hides decorated with copies of huge tapestries from the destroyed Weyrs.
Sorelle picked up a stale piece of bread that remained on a dish and she gnawed at it as she sat down.
"Sorellemine is awake at last. The sun is warm."
She smiled and got up, moving over to the opening of the Weyr, and looked out. It didn't take her long to spot Sivarith sunning herself with Tonuth. ***"I will oil you when you return."*** Sivarith grunted in satisfaction and stretched her head along Tonuth's flank.
Satisfied that Sivarith was content, Sorelle returned to her work. Ever since the crimson dragon pair had hatched, she had been restless. She had even given up making advances at J'lor, whom she still thought to be N'lon. His constant excuses and refusals were frustrating and confusing. Now, however, she had something else on which to focus. The crimson dragons symbolized something. Something from the past... something she had to discover soon.
For the third time, she read a passage on one of the hides. It was so innocent, yet it kept tickling her mind. A child's rhyme, meant for fun. Yet, it hinted at a pair of red dragons. Unfortunately, it gave no other clues. She needed to find the rest of the song that had come to her during the hatching and she knew she should consult with Maram or a Harper. Yet... She sighed. Now was not the time to alarm the Weyr unnecessarily.
Frustrated and angry, Sorelle knocked the dish off of the table with a swift swipe of her hand.

After his class was over and Tonuth had flown off to the heights with the big gold he turned and looked up at Sorelle’s weyr and there she stood looking up at the heights as well.
He had been quite ‘frustrated’ over the last several months and sought relief with a friend. He’d talked and she’d listened and smiled and helped him deal with it in her own way. His former greenrider weyrmate from High Reaches had been what she’d always been, ‘understanding.’
He looked back at Roux, smiled and shrugged before loping up the ramp toward the gold rider. He slowed down as he got to the door. Sorelle had already turned back into her workarea. He leaned against the entrance and watched her pour over the records. She was looking for something but what, he didn't know.
She might no longer be Weyrwoman yet her work ethic still remained. He felt guilty for the way he’d been acting. He didn’t know why exactly it was so important to him for her to acknowledge that he was J’lor and not N’lon.
He started to turn away and walked part way down the ramp again, when he heard a crash and went running back.
“Sorelle, are you alright?” he called as he rounded the corner.

“Sorelle, are you alright?”
She whipped around in her seat, her face mirroring the frustration she felt, "do I look all right," she snapped. Sliding from the table, she knelt down on the floor and began picking up the pieces of the dish. Her night dress moved around her in a flurry of fabric before it, too, settled to the floor. Mumbling to herself, she worked too quickly to retrieve the pieces and ended up slicing open the tip of one of her fingers. Cursing, she dropped the ones she had already picked up as she grasped the finger in her other hand.
She stood and regarded him in silence for a second, then walked over to a wall and began drawing on it in her own blood. Crudely and quickly, two crimson dragons took shape. "When the hide of the dragon runs the color of blood..." she whispered. Turning to face him, she started to speak, but closed her mouth.
Why won't you join my bed anymore, my heart?
It was not something she could voice. Lately, his dragon and Sivarith were closer than he and Sorelle. She knew it had something to do with the destruction of the Weyr. He had changed. He was so different than the man she had loved before. Her heart constricted when she thought how desperate she had been to find him, how she longed to hold him... yet, now that he was here, she felt hollow, abandoned.
"Don't you have weyrbabies to instruct," she asked.

He watched her as she turned to pick up the pieces of the broken dish the gown floating around her still lithe form. When she sliced her finger he took a step forward but stopped when she pinned him with her stare.
He shook his head in disbelief when she madly painted dragons in her own blood on the wall of her weyr. He leaned closer when she mumbled but all he got was “… color of blood”
It was that mute hurt stare she turned on him. He shook his head trying to clear it. His brother had been gone for months. He couldn’t think straight anymore, he couldn’t think of the reasons he’d held back from what they both wanted, what they both needed. He’d walked out of her weyr when she needed him and he’d needed her.
He stepped forward and grabbed her hand looking at the cut. He leaned over to reach her apothecary shelf. He pulled down the redwart and numbweed. Covering one of his fingers with the redwart he dipped it in numbweed and coated her finger. Then he wrapped it with a small bandage and kept the pressure on to stop the bleeding.
"Don't you have weyrbabies to instruct," she asked.
He just shook his head and wiped the medication off his fingers. “Class is done for today.” He said throwing down the cloth. Then his hands rose to cup her face. “I’m sorry, I’m so sorry.”
His lips descended on hers and sucked at them hungrily as his hands threaded though her hair.

“Class is done for today.”
"Great," she said sarcastically as she inspected his handiwork on her finger. "Maybe you can go and--"
His hands surrounded her face and tilted her head upward so she was forced to look into his eyes. She struggled momentarily, but stopped as he began apologizing.
Then... he kissed her.
It was not the kiss he had given her since she had found him on the sand. Those were sterile, usually on the forehead or, even worse, on top of the head. This one... was what she had been longing for... craving.
Her lips followed his in intensity and she let her thoughts go. Raising her arms, she reached up and clasped her hands around his neck, pulling him even closer. This was perfect, this was right, he was--
Her eyes popped open and she pulled herself away, stumbling backwards and colliding with the table.
"Who--?"
She shook her head and stared at him.

Her response was electric and he felt himself caught up in the emotions of the moment. He hadn’t allowed himself to even imagine her in his arms after he’d regained his senses.
Her arms went around his neck, she pulled him closer kissed him back inflaming him further.
Then suddenly she pulled away almost stumbling into the table behind her. He burned and looked at her puzzled by the sudden reversal.
"Who--?"
“Sorelle I…” then it registered. She shook her head and looked at him like a stranger. Was she back to reality? He knew J’lor and Tonuth didn’t stand a chance with the gold rider. He only hoped he hadn’t thrown her for a loop.
Not the madness again, surely not that. He held his breath. She’d been so stable over the last few months.
“Sorelle, are you alright?”

Her hands reached backward and she grabbed onto the table behind her to steady herself. Images swirled through her troubled mind. The cries of the dying, the screams of dragons falling to the ground, wings burned, backs broken by debris. N'lon had been in the skies. She had heard the keening of Branth until that voice, too, went silent. Sorelle's legs grew weak with the memory and she slowly lowered herself to the floor, but her eyes never left J'lor.
The cold of between was nothing to the coldness Sorelle felt at that moment in time as the two stared at each other. She shivered and wrapped her arms around herself as she sat on the floor. Then, she frowned and looked away. He had been there for her, taken care of her, showed restraint and patience. She nodded slightly and stood, walking back to him with a look of determination.
Placing a small hand on his upper arm, she tilted her head upward. "Kiss me again," she whispered.

She shied away from him with a stunned look that caused him no little concern. Her hands grabbed the table for support.
Then he almost panicked when her eyes pinned him where he was and she sank slowly to the floor. But it was even worse as they glazed and her mind seemed to turn inward . He was afraid like he hadn't been in months. Afraid he'd just pushed her over the edge into madness again, all because he couldn't control his own stupid desire for the tiny woman.
She looked away and he closed his eyes and expelled a breath. When he reopened them she had stood and was walking toward him and he expected her to hit him or scream obscenities.
Instead her hand lay on his upper arm and her gaze tilted upward into his "Kiss me again.
He blinked as his mind tried to process what had just happened. She saw him, she saw J'lor. All the hunger returned and the fire he'd held banked for so long burst into flame. One arm encircled her. He restrained his actions though he knew he couldn’t keep his response out of his eyes.
Gently he caressed the side of her face and then lowered his lips to hers in a kiss at first tender with the knowledge that finally they both knew it was J'lor kissing Sorelle. It became more demanding as his control slipped a bit.
He pulled back to look into her eyes "are you alright?" he asked.

He was taller than N'lon and the difference was noticed almost immediately. She faltered as he kissed her passionately.
"are you alright?"
"I'm..."
She looked away, confused. How... when... had this happened? Did it even matter?
Pulling out of his embrace, she walked over to the table and looked down at the documents, as if seeing them for the first time. Then her eyes traveled up to the bloody dragons on the wall. Frowning, she rubbed her bandaged finger with her thumb.
As she returned to him, her eyes were troubled.
"I have to think," she said. Gently, she touched his face, then walked to the mouth of the weyr and leaned against the opening, hugging her arms around herself. She saw J'lor for who he was, but, almost as if there had to be an unnatural balance in her troubled mind, she had lost all thought of the crimson dragons.

He almost held his breath waiting for her reply. Then she pulled away from him and he followed her at a respectful distance toward the table.
They were on new ground; uncertain eyes turned up at him after she’d catalogued the room. Uncertain but aware of who he was she finally spoke.
"I have to think," she said. The gentle touch to his face gave him reason to hope she wasn’t going to turn on him the way she had on the beach.
He was physically healed and strong. But he realized clearly this small woman held a piece of him he hadn’t possessed for too long to count the time. She didn’t even know how he felt. It had taken him a very long time to admit it to himself.
He sat heavily leaning his forearms on his knees. His hands rubbed together willing to wait as long as it took. Years he had spent, the epitome of a dragonrider making connections but never giving his heart to any woman. A parade of faces yet not one had ever come closer than friendship. Unfailingly kind and caring, but not once had he been able to give what he no longer possessed.
He realized he was still a little jealous of his brother’s luck. He’d had her love, just as he’d had J’lor’s.
He looked at the floor and shook his head slightly suddenly a bit amused at himself.

Sorelle looked out over the Weyr. In the distance, she could see Sivarith sunning with Tonuth and she laughed, now realizing that it was a brown, J'lor's brown, not a bronze, that had been occupying Sivarith's time.
"You're going to give us a bad reputation," she thought to the gold.
"Mine is not doing so badly herself in that aspect."
Sorelle glanced over her shoulder at J'lor, then turned to face him fully. The sun behind her silhouetted the outline of her body through the nightgown she still wore. Stepping forward, she tipped his chin up with a finger and she kissed him with a softness at odds with her reputation. "Sivarith says the sun is warm today," she said. "Care for a flight?" Without waiting for an answer, she disappeared to change, emerging minutes later.
With a flourish, Sivarith was at the edge of the weyr, her hide resplendent in the light of the sun. "The thermals are high today."

He watched her almost completely still afraid the slightest movement would break whatever this fragile thing was.
Her outline was tantalizing in the nimbus that surrounded her when she turned and he smiled as she approached. Her soft kiss was different, much different then those he'd experienced before.
"Sivarith says the sun is warm today," she said. "Care for a flight?"
When she left to change, he stood and took a deep breath in the golden sunlight that streamed in. This was completely new ground. It was a place of hope he hadn't dared to wish for.
He turned as she came back fully dressed. He smiled as she reached him and Sivarith came to the edge of the weyr.
He took her by the shoulders and turned her toward him and gently move a lock of hair before caressing the side of her face. "I'll always fly with you." he said with a soft smile. Then turned her back toward her beautiful lifemate. "Let's go" he said and gave her a pat before turning to Tonuth who had just arrived .
He scrambled aboard and strapped in to follow the golden pair into the sky.
