The Clutch has been laid. We are now days/weeks away from the hatching of the first clutch of Dragon Weyr. The seasons have turned to summer as time has passed. Chalarath still guards her clutch, but she now ventures out more, allowing others the chance to sneak a peek or the candidates to enter, even occasionally under her watchful eye. Feel free to venture inside the hatching sands, look at the eggs from a distance, perhaps if you are lucky, you may even be able to get closer. Chalarath might be there or she might be off for the time being, one never knows. There are a total of 22 eggs in the clutch, yet Chalarath guards two as though precious to her. One, clearly has the golden sheen of a queen. The other, slightly smaller, seems to almost glisten like silver. Do you dare to enter? ---- OOC -- feel free to post anytime you want to come in and see the eggs on the sands! Just don't do anything stupid to hurt them and Chalarath won't get TOO angry

Lorcan could not resist getting a peek at the eggs. He couldn't stand just listening to the talk, he wanted to see the real thing. He thought he could just look in the entrance, and if Chalarath seemed upset, he would leave. It wasn't like she was going to leap across the sands and eat him. Lorcan knew enough about dragons not to be too frightened of the Gold. Better yet, he could wait until she was gone. She did have to eat.
One day he was walking through the Weyrbowl and he saw the Gold at the feeding grounds. Lorcan knew this was an opportunity to see the eggs. He turned and ran towards the Hatching Grounds, hoping to get there before Chalarath returned.
The boy skidded to a stop at the entrance of the Hatching Grounds. He hesitantly stepped inside, stepping onto the hot sand. He didn't go far, just a few steps from the entrance. His eyes practically lit up as he looked over the eggs. He counted all twenty-two of them, and a sparkling Gold in the middle. He wondered what the silvery one was. Maybe a second Gold egg that had turned out funny. It would make sense, with only one clutching Gold left, the Weyr needed more. Lorcan wasn't the most interested in those two, though. The plain, mottled eggs were what counted for him. Any one could hold his future dragon.

"They're beautiful, aren't they," Sorelle asked Lorcan. Her approach had been quiet and she wouldn't be the least bit surprised if he hadn't heard her soft steps in the sand. She stepped past the boy and knelt down close to the silvery egg. "What do we have here," she asked, perplexed. Examining it without touching it, she frowned. Very odd. Her mind searched the records in her head, but she could recall no other such occurrence. "New Hold, new color," she murmured.
Sorelle's practiced eye moved over the rest of the eggs as she stood. "A healthy number," she said, though she knew they needed more. "Well-formed, all of them." Glancing at Lorcan, she smiled, seeing the white knot, "are you excited, Candidate? Does your heart beat faster at just the thought of touching one that will be yours for all your days?" She remembered the first moment with Sivarith. Even as a hatchling, the gold was strongheaded. A wry grin formed on her mouth. Many attributed the same traits to her. "Tell me about your personality," she asked of the young boy.
In the distance, she could see Sivarith fly by and land on an outcropping of stone. The dragon had not left her sight since they had returned from Benden but would not explain her actions.

Echo had arrived before Lorcan and Sorelle. She had been there for at least a candlemark admiring the eggs. There were a lot of them, but thankfully the Weyr had enough candidates. Echo hoped there were enough candidates here to make sure no hatchling was left behind. Echo didn’t really want to see what was happening at the other Weyrs right now, so she was happy that she didn’t have to go back. Except, every once in a while, she would have this strange inkling to need to go see if her mother, Jorja, had made it out on time.
Echo’s mind was plastered on Jorja when she entered the Sands, about a candlemark before Lorcan and Sorelle arrived. Her troubled mind brought her to the place where it had been the most troubled last—at a time when Chalarath had been clutching and all Echo could think about was pessimistic thoughts. But Echo was an optimistic person at heart, which made her pessimism weigh down on her more than it probably would someone else. But now that Chalarath had survived the clutching, Echo’s mind was considerably uplifted.
The Dragonhealer spent most of the time touching the eggs lovingly, as if she were Maram or Chalarath. But she was not. It must have been the Dragonhealer thing, and maybe being so anxiety-crazed when Chalarath was clutching. Now she touched the eggs, but was afraid of touching the two stand-out eggs, the Gold one and the Silver one, because they were revered by Chalarath. She hesitated, and stood still for at least half of the candlemark she was there, before finally making up her mind and heading over to touch them.
Then, as she was leaving, she spied Lorcan and Sorelle, the retired Weyrwoman. As she passed them, she nodded her welcome and good-bye to them. Then she was gone.

Lorcan jumped slightly when he heard a woman's voice very close behind him. She walked past him, and Lorcan recognized the retired Weyrwoman, Sorelle. He had never met her before, but of course he knew who the Goldrider was. He nodded when she remarked that it was a good number, glad to hear that she thought they were all healthy. She knew more than he did about that. She didn't seem too concerned about the silvery egg, just curious.
"Of course I'm excited!" he said, an eager grin crossing his face. Sorelle had described what he was feeling quite accurately.
He lifted his hand to his mouth and chewed on a fingernail thoughtfully when Sorelle asked about his personality. Could the Gold rider guess what he would Impress from that? She seemed so wise, so maybe she could. But it was hard to describe yourself! Lorcan had never thought about it before.
"I'm not like other kids!" he began, shifting his hand from his mouth to his hip. He chuckled; okay, that sounded a little weird. "Maybe because my father's a bronze rider, but I see things more seriously. I want to do something important, not just play around. I'm a hard worker, I don't give up on a job just because it's difficult. I don't know, sometimes I feel like I don't want to spend time with other people. It's too hard. But I'm not...mean...the way some other people are. I want to help the ones who are weaker than me."
Done with that little outpouring, he blushed a little, then looked over the eggs. "So, what do you think, is there an egg here for me?"

Nerys was fascinated. She'd heard about the eggs on the sands, gone to all her candidate classes, but she had yet to venture to see them on her own. She knew the candidates were going as a group, but she had no idea what to expect. Deciding she didn't want to be too surprised when with the others, she made her way there.
As she stood in the entryway, she found her breath caught in her throat. She'd know the giant gold was away. She'd seen her fly off to hunt, which had given her the gumption to go there now.
Seeing the eggs sitting there was astounding. They were magnificent. So much larger than the little flitter eggs had been. Her eyes took in the others on the sands. Nerys chose to remain where she was, near the edge of the sands. She didn't want to do anything to interrupt the others, once again her mother's breeding seemed to sound in her mind. It was never her place as the daughter or wife of a holder to interrupt another.
Yet, her eyes continued to stray back to the giant eggs, and her ears were tuned to their conversation.

Sorelle listened with rapt attention as Lorcan began to describe himself. He was much more self-aware than many his age and she was proud that he knew himself so well. When he asked if there was a dragon for him, she smiled at the Candidate. "Your qualities will serve you well," she replied. Her eyes drifted over the eggs. "Do not show fear during the hatching. Stand your ground and be true to yourself."
Echo's departure interrupted Sorelle's thoughts and she returned the Healer's nod. She had seen the woman many times and was glad that her skills had helped the injured Alorath.
After Echo exited the sands, Sorelle put a hand on Lorcan's shoulder, "if you are who you say you are, there should be a dragon for you."
It was then that she saw the other Candidate. The girl appeared older than the one to whom she had been speaking. "Come in, come in," Sorelle beckoned, "don't let a small woman and a nervous candidate prevent you from seeing the eggs. Chalarath will be done feeding soon."
