Ceinwen crouched down as the glow tumbled from Tiball’s hand and reached for it in an attempt to help him retrieve it. She fumbled around, batting at the thing as they both moved for it. It was impossible not to see the humor in it. At least it was to her and she began to giggle a bit. Her chuckling stopped abruptly when Echo introduced herself. Ceinwen made one last swing for the glow and then stood giving Echo a nod and then handing the glow back to Tiball.
‘Dragonhealer,’ she thought. Ceinwen had never trained in that area, though she had picked up a few things here and there. Echo gave some instructions to them both and Ceinwen turned to act on them. Gathering the things she would need to brew the tea and laying them out, she went to check their water stores.
It was then that a rider and his young dragon were brought in. Echo sprang into action and began directing them. As Echo spoke her name, Ceinwen abandoned her current task and rushed to the side of the young rider. She looked him over, feeling his head and examining his flushed face. Then turning on her heels she moved quickly to collect some needed supplies.
When she returned, there was a woman sitting by his side and a very handsome man peering down on her. Once again that strange feeling came to pit of her stomach, causing her to stop mid-stride as she stared at him. Why was she feeling like this? What was this peculiar desire she felt deep within her? She could feel her heart pounding in her chest as her eyes slowly looked him up and down. Ceinwen was snapped out of her licentious dreamlike state as someone brushed past her. Her thoughts and reactions brought a deep blush to her cheeks. Gulping in shame and mystification, she tore her eyes away from the striking man and moved back to the young man’s side.
Placing the bowl of cool water on a side table, she rang out a cloth and began to dab his brow. “He is running a slight fever,” she said to no one in particular, knowing that the audience at his beside would want to be kept appraised, but not trusting that she could keep herself from ogling should she catch the gentleman’s eye. “He is also quite pale,” she added as she examined his face. Switching hands, she continued applying the cool water to his face and neck as she moved a hand down to loosen his shirt and take a look at his form to see if she could note any injuries. As her eyes moved downward, she noted the worn out fabric and the raw red flesh along his inner thighs. The sight pained her and she looked back toward his face with sympathy. “There are some injuries to his inner thighs. I would hazard a guess that it has to do with the long journey.” Feeling a little more herself and in her element, she chanced a look at the woman who sat beside him. Giving her a weak smile she asked softly, “Would you mind continuing to apply the compress while I go and retrieve the necessary items to dress his wounds?”

Oneth reacted to Echo's first proddings with a restless swishing of his tail, but he did not move to harm her. When Echo's hands first moved towards his wings, the young brown seemed to flinch from the contact. They hurt. He wanted to tell her, but His was not beside him to speak.
What hurt at first soon eased as she applied the medications and her gentle touch to help him heal. When she spoke to him, explaining what she was doing, Oneth inclined his head ever so slightly to show her he understood and appreciated her efforts.
As her fingers worked their magic, his inner eyelids began to droop closed, until only the outermost remained open and alert, still watching. Yet, he was tired. He wanted to rest.
On the cot next to the dragon lay the boy. He'd heard little to nothing of what had transpired around him since he'd lost consciousness, but the faint prickly in his mind as Oneth tried to reach him, brought him back for the deepest recesses of darkness.
For a moment, K'vys' eyes flew open and wildly stared at the ceiling above him. Then, with a gagging sound, he somehow managed to turn just enough to lose whatever was left inside his stomach on the shoes of the unlucky soul who happened to be standing in that exact spot.
That had used the last reserves of any strength he had. K'vys slipped back into unconsciousness with a moan. He would be glad later that he had not, in fact, been awake or aware enough to know that his fool-hardy decision not to report his damaged leathers would lead to such a disaster. Had he been awake he would have been embarrassed to the point of turning as red as the pulsing Red Star itself. Blissfully, K'vys slept on into unconsciousness.

“I’m not sure yet” she responded. “I’m Lilia, Master Harper. He collapsed out in the bowl, I had him brought in here. The healer should be here anytime.”
Lilia? He was sure he'd heard that name before. R'gant drew closer to the boy's side and took a seat. His gaze swept across K'vys body and he swallowed back a dry lump that had risen at the back of his throat. His eyes lingered on the boy's hands which were intertwined with the young Harper's. Following the line of her arm up to her face, he gave the woman a weak smile before his attention was torn away by another's arrival.
Perhaps it was a trick of the light, or maybe he was as tired as Xanith had said. Whatever the case, he was sure he saw a flicker of something in this woman's gaze. Curiosity perhaps? Or maybe uncertainty. He wasn't sure. Whatever the look may have been it was gone now as quickly as it had come. R'gant looked down at K'vys and watched silently as she began to work.
Each profound observation about his condition struck a chord in R'gant heart. He had been placed in charge of this child's wellbeing and he had failed him and his dragon. Although the boy was young R'gant still wished to stay in his favor. Would he blame him for what occured? More than likely he was sure.
“There are some injuries to his inner thighs. I would hazard a guess that it has to do with the long journey.”
And his idiocy! He should have been more observant and now this boy...this child, was paying the price. L'yst would surely have a few words for him when he found out. That would lead to another debacle altogether!
Before Lilia could reach out and take the cold compress, R'gant slipped his hand over the woman's and gazed into her eyes. A warmth akin to the fires of hell blazed within him as his skin grazed hers. His eyes fluttered closed for a moment and he looked away. "I...I'll do it. Hurry and retrieve the things you need."
He heaved in a trembling sigh and looked back at the pale child. I'll make this up to you. You'll see."
As if the God's were finally punishing him, K'vys eyes opened and he shifted to the side and vomitted directly on his feet. R'gant eyes closed as the putrid, thick wetness of their last meal slithered across his pant legs and shoes. Before he could say a word the boy fell back into oblivion.
"Children!" R'gant murmured beneath his breath as he stepped back a few inches to look at the mess.

Echo had at first been wary of the girl named Ceinwen because of all the orders she’d given her. Usually, Echo could pull off her ordering because she knew those whom she was ordering. Now, though, Echo had been wary of ordering around a girl who looked just about as flustered as herself. Well, that, and she felt very flustered about ordering a guy around, until, of course, he had asked what he could do. Once he asked, Echo felt a little better, and had told him to do the glows as well as he could, which, helpingly, he had. But since Ceinwen was the same rank as her, Echo had wondered if she was going to tell her no, she wouldn’t do anything. However, Ceinwen at first busied herself to the tea and then, quickly, switched to making sure the boy was alright. Echo had definitely breathed a sigh of relief there.
Then, as she sat, massaging the Brown’s wing-muscles with her ever-gentle hands, though now he couldn’t feel them because he was numbed, she watched the others interact. The Harper-lady had called herself Lilia, which was a nice name. And the boy’s name was Keevys, only now it was K’vys, which meant the Harper-lady had known the poor kid before he had Impressed. Then, as she watched, a Bronzerider came in and stood. No, wait, he’d been there before, she just hadn’t noticed him because she was working on the Brown. She let up massaging the Brown’s left muscle—it was as good as it was going to get—and started on the right one, positioning herself better so that she may optimally work.
It really peeved her that she didn’t know his name, and she should have, shouldn’t she? Every person must know the Bronzeriders and Queenriders. But Echo had just kept going and going with the sick and injured. Even now she was going and going, and was probably running on the last of her steam. This was after food, even. She found a knot in the Brown’s wing-muscle and started working her thumbs through it. Soon her thumbs would hurt… or they’d be numb from numbweed… but she preferred this type of healing to making people throw up the ash in their stomachs.
“Echo,” She said after Lilia had introduced herself, and smiled at them so they might realized it was her name, not just some random saying. “I’m a Senior Journeyman Healer, but I’ve trained mostly in Dragonhealing.” Why not just state her full rank while she was at it? That might make a lot more since after saying her name. There! The knot in the wing-muscle had un-tightened enough so that it would not hurt the Brown. She quickly ran her hands up and down the Brown’s wing joint again, just for good measure, and found that all that was left was sore muscle. Well, she couldn’t find that, per say, but she knew from the way the Brown had moved that it was.
When she heard Ceinwen say the kid’s wounds were from the long journey, she saw the look on the Bronzerider’s face. Her heart skipped a beat in the way it usually did when she realized that people took it upon themselves and felt guilty. “Hey, it’s not that bad, Bronzerider; we’ve all been through a lot and there really was nothing you could have done to stop the chaffing.” She smiled at him warmly, but at the same time felt the heat rush to her face as she realized that she had spoken to him in a tone that sort of sounded like she was equal to him in some way. “Oh, uhm, I truly am sorry, Bronzerider, but I don’t think I’ve met you yet. It pains me to say that, seeing as you are a Bronzerider and all…”
When the rider said he would go get the things needed, Echo pushed herself into a standing position and opened her mouth to protest, but it seemed K’vys would beat her to it. The boy awoke, vomited all over the rider’s shoes, and fell back into unconsciousness. Echo folded one arm around her stomach and rested the other arm’s elbow on it with the arm’s hand at her mouth, though it didn’t actually touch, for the numbweed on it. A slight smile flickered across her face, but it was gone. “I was about to say that I have my hip-pack here. It has bandages, numbweed, oil, and a jar of fellis juice, along with redwort and needlethorn and a couple other remedial herbs I like to keep with me. But I can’t touch it right yet, because I’ve got numbweed all over my hands, so if someone would like to grab it…?”
She smiled slightly and nodded to her pack then said, “I’ll be right back after I’ve washed my hands.” And she trotted away, washed her hands quickly but thoroughly—when you’re a Healer, you learn how to wash numbweed off as quick as you can—and came back. Someone had given Ceinwen the pack. And Echo, thoughtful girl, had brought a towel with her for the Bronzerider’s feet. “Here you go,” she said, handing him the towel with another smile. Even if she was tired, she had to keep up the appearance that she wasn’t.

Lilia didn’t miss the looks between the two, and though she might not have seen it for herself she knew the feeling and she knew the looks that were passing between the young healer and the bronze rider.
More than twelve turns ago something similar had happened to her. ‘oh careful girl’ she said inside her head. There was not a doubt in her mind that R’gant was devastatingly handsome but then so was R’enh. In fact, they'd probably been about this same age. She looked back down at the boy as the healers worked on him. Dragonriders broke hearts… they didn’t mean it they were just in a different sphere from the ordinary holder. Their values and the way thought about things was just different.
She’d reached for the compress as the younger woman asked but then the rider put his own hand out. "I...I'll do it. Hurry and retrieve the things you need."
She bit her lips when K’vys tossed all over the rider. The chuckle under her breath was stifled yet she couldn’t hide it all. Those leathers were going to be fun to clean.
She figured at this point she should probably make herself scarce. She didn’t think she was needed. She would come and visit the boy later. Right now she needed to track down her son and make sure they had a place for the night.

“Hey, it’s not that bad, Bronzerider; we’ve all been through a lot and there really was nothing you could have done to stop the chaffing.”
Her words were the truth, yet they did almost nothing to assauge his worries. As with Lilia, he offered her a gentle smile, but remained silent.
“Oh, uhm, I truly am sorry, Bronzerider, but I don’t think I’ve met you yet. It pains me to say that, seeing as you are a Bronzerider and all…”
He turned back to her and watched her tend to Oneth. Her hands were gentle, but firm. He could tell that she was very proficient at her skill and that Oneth's wellbeing was of the utmost importance to her. K'vys would be glad to know that his dragon had recieved adequate care when he awakened.
"There's no need for apologies," he said waving her words aside. "My name's R'gant and it's very nice to meet you, Echo." He paused and looked back at the boy. "Thank you for your kind words concerning the boy." Although he knew she only said them to be nice.
Everything after that happened very quickly and soon Echo was handing him a towel to clean himself. He took it from her grasp.
"Thank you." He said. This time his eyes lingered on her face for a second longer before he tore them away. The woman looked fairly exhausted, yet her lively spirit seemed to consume the room. If she could remain in good spirits after all of this so shall he. Still holding the cold compress, R'gant bent at the waist and wiped away what he could. They'd need a more thorough scrubbing later, but that would have to wait.
When he stood it was to find that Lilia had gone. He looked toward the exit as if he believed he'd see her retreat, but she was long gone now.
"I think I've become more of a burden than help," he said. His hands finally left the boy and he bundled the towel up.
"Please keep me informed of his condition. I'd like to be called when he awakens." He spoke to Echo now, though his eyes darted quickly to Ceinwen before he turned to discard the towel.
With that he left the infirmary in search of Xanith and his private weyr.

An incandescent surge shot up her arm as she felt someone's hand brush against her own. Her eyes immediately darted to the source and she froze, mesmerized by the pair of moss green eyes that stared back at her. Her head dipped to the side slightly as she watched his eyes flutter closed. It was his command for her to hurry broke the spell that had held her captivated, but as she stood to move someone thrust a pack into her hands.
Ceinwen pulled her chair in line with the young riders thighs and took a seat once more. Just in time too, as the young rider awoke briefly and expelled the last of his lunch over the side of the cot and onto the shoes of the green eyed man.
Opening the pack, she easily found and retrieved the various items she needed. Ceinwen worked quickly, pulling on a glove her master had gifted her for such uses, she applied the numbweed to the area of his thighs that was exposed between the tattered leather while she listened to the conversation between the bronzerider and Echo. Once applied evenly and given some time to take effect, Ceinwen removed her glove and began the painstaking task of separating fabric from skin where the two had fused together. ‘Better that he passed out,’ she thought to herself. The numbweed would help, but even that would not mask all of the pain.
Once she was certain his skin was free of any debris from the leather or otherwise, she cut away the excess fabric and cleaned the wounds with fresh water. She could have simply removed the brownrider’s pants, but keeping them on preserved the modesty of all parties involved. When the bronzerider spoke to Echo, Ceinwen found that she could not help but glance his way. She studied him for a moment admiring his countenance before returning to her task. Once cleaned, she patted the area dry and then quickly rose to retrieve witch hazel from the cabinet. When she returned, the master harper had left.
She sat once again and used the witch hazel over the open wounds to stop the bleeding and on top of the heat rash to help promote healing. With this sort of injury, it was best to not cover it. So the bandages were not necessary. It was at this point that R’gant rose and gave his request for being kept informed before taking his leave. Ceinwen glanced his way one last time and then looked over at Echo with a small smile. She wasn’t sure why he had had such an effect on her, but there was no sense in trying to contemplate the now. There was work to be done and patients to be helped.
She had done what she could for K’vys for now. Once he woke, she would offer him something for the pain and see to it the he rehydrated and got something to eat. In the meantime, Ceinwen busied herself by cleaning up her supplies and finding a drudge to mop up the floor.

Oneth almost sighed with relief as Echo worked on his other wing. It was blissful to no longer feel the hurt of the tired muscles. His head rested on his forepaws as he watched the goings on around K'vys. His eyes still whirled with worry, but Echo's soothing hands and his sheer exhaustion soon had the brown dragon drifting off into a much needed healing rest. As morning approached, though, even the brown was not immune to the twitching effects caused by the queen's mood. But, he did not stir, even though his tail moved in his sleep at times.
K'vys, blissfully, slept through all of Ceinwen's treatments. Through the first part of the night, K'vys didn't stir at all. His body so beaten down that it seemed nothing could disturb him from the much needed rest.
However, as the later night and early morning dawned, his body twitched and his head shook with strange dreams. He saw himself flying through the sky, then running on the ground, then sitting atop Beleeth, his mother's dragon, then the fire in the sky. The dreams continued to swirl and change as he moaned in his sleep.
Suddenly in his dream, he felt as though he was watching the death of his parents, even though he had not witnessed the event first hand.
K'vys's eyes bolted open and he nearly bolted upright from his prone position. But that movement did not bode well from the young lad. His head spun, he cried out in an anguished pain, both bodily and spiritually.
K'vys was disoriented, confused, and hurt. His mouth felt like it had been stuffed with some strange substance that kept him from swallowing. He tried to turn his head to look for water, but all that resulted in was flashes of light bursting in front of his eyes as he sucked in gasps of air. That was when he started a strange gagging cry over the side of the bed, unable to hold back the sorrow at losing the only people he'd ever cared about and the feelings of his now bruised and hurt body.
Unlike the night before, K'vys didn't leave a mess, but the choking sobs from his nightmare made it hard for him to draw breath. His head ached, his mind was incoherent, a mass of pain, emotion, and strange images.
And then he shifted and felt the flesh of his thighs make direct contact with each other. K'yvs cried out in pain at the contact, not even able to comprehend why it hurt or why his thighs were not clothed as they should be. He was lost amid a see of sorrow and pain and had no idea how to find his way out of it alone.
Oneth, sensing K'vys's pain and confusion, woke with a start, crying out to his rider. He tried to go to him, but whimpered a bit as his sore muscles did not seem to want to do as he expected. It didn't help then, that the poor dragon could not longer hold in what was in his bladder. He blinked his multi-faceted eyes towards K'vys and tried to soothe his rider, but K'vys's was full of confusion and Oneth could not help him.

Echo watched Ceinwen work, wanting to help but realizing that she might not need any. She felt reluctant to do much of anything else, so instead she started her rounds… again. The Bronzerider had left, after speaking to her a bit and telling her to watch after his charge. She had told him he was welcome, for everything, and had watched him leave. Then her eyes had inadvertently strayed to the boy and his Brown. With Ceinwen working on the boy, and the Brown possibly safely asleep, Echo turned to the others. A couple of them had started moaning again, and she let them drink from ladles full of water. All but one fell into a fitful, tossing sleep. He was the one who she thought would wake up insane. He had asked her, quite sanely, for a drink of water, which she obliged, and then he fell asleep. His sleep was more sound than she’d seen anyone sleep for the last couple days, and she envied him.
Finally, after making sure everyone was at least sated for the time being, she sat in the same chair she had sat in before the Brownrider had come in, no, before Tiball had come in. She was intent on staying awake, and she kept a watchful eye over K’vys. Ceinwen was finished with him by then, and Echo didn’t know where the other Healer had gone to, but she was still sitting there. She had been told by R’gant, a Bronzerider, that she had to watch over him… she would! She didn’t know when she drifted off to sleep, but sleep finally found her poor, tired body. Dreams gripped her in their taunting hands. She saw Mother and Father, and they were fine. This was before the Exodus, as Echo had started calling the meteor falling out of the sky, in a time where things might have been peaceful if Mother hadn’t always been so insane near her.
Just like she was, now. Mother was acting insane, waving a skin of wine in her direction. Echo was a little kid again. But this time it was different, because this time Mother was sick. Mother was sicker than Echo had ever seen her in her entire life, and a small part of Echo’s conscious brain made the girl realize that this was her brain’s way of trying to make out how her mother had died. Her mother got frailer and frailer, and Echo wanted to help, wanted to see how to fix her mother! Her waking brain told her that, as long as she was having nightmares, bad dreams, she was alive. Someone had said that once… was it Daddy? He had said that if someone keeps dreaming bad things when bad things were happening, they would live. It was only when someone started dreaming of good things of the past or of the future during bad events that the person had to worry. Echo didn’t have to worry…
It was the cry that woke Echo up. Disoriented, head spinning, Echo sat up in the cot and wondered how she’d gotten there. Someone had given her a blanket and moved her to a cot, which had been previously occupied if Echo remembered right. So someone had been there to move her last night; Echo thought it might have been Daddy. At least the MasterHealer had seen the sick. Then, as her head cleared, she realized who that moaning was coming from. Well, the moaning had now escalated into gagging, and Echo jumped to her feet in, seriously, one swift movement. She raced to the fill a cup full of water, and then hurried over to K’vys.
“Here, drink this, drink this,” She said, handing the boy the cup of water. Then she reached for her ever-faithful hip-pack before glancing down in horror to see that it wasn’t there. She looked around, wondering where she could have put it before realizing that Ceinwen had had it last night, and then she looked down. Her brown eyes harkened upon the pack and a sigh escaped her. “Hey, hey, don’t worry; you’re in the infirmary, K’vys. Hey, listen to me; you’re going to be fine. I’m going to put numbweed on your thighs. Don’t worry, they’re only chaffed, but I don’t doubt that it hurts. Look, look, your Brown is right there beside you. He can tell you that you’re alright.” During this small speech, she had dipped her fingertips in oil, and pushed them into the numbweed. Then she started to apply the numbweed to his thighs, not caring what he thought she was doing but knowing that as soon as the numbweed was applied, the boy would probably stop.
It didn’t help that Oneth had dispelled his innards and the place stunk. She would have to ask a drudge to pick that up later, and hoped that Oneth didn’t track himself through it. She gently moved to the other leg, “I’m Echo, K’vys. Your name is nice, and your Brown is a great little thing.” She kept talking. Keep talking and people couldn’t concentrate on what had hurt them most of the time, that’s what a Healer said worked best for people who were suffering. Well, if he wasn’t suffering, then the poor kid was dying. Done with the numbweed, Echo sat back and pulled out redwort singlehandedly, spreading it over her numbweeded fingers before wiping them with a towel. “Look, it’s not so bad now, huh?”

K'vys was disoriented and struggling to breath through the gasping sobs. He struggled to comprehend the words of the woman who approached him.
The cup was thrust at him and he tried to drink, but his sobs had not ceased and he merely choked on the liquid, coughing it back up and all over the healer. K'vys was gagging and sobbing again, unable to stop, and feeling almost as though he was choking on the water that had remained in his airway.
And then, he nearly bolted off the bed. Her hands had touched him! He tried to get away. He would not allow such an act. No. No. He wanted to tell her to stop, but he couldn't get the words past his throat. Even if she got the numbweed partly where she'd intended, his thrashing only made matters worse. Still under the effects of his fever, coupled with the effects of a dragonflight, his body took her touch to mean things it should not. He fought against her. His eyes whirled with fever and confusion and pain.
He had to get away. That was the only thought he had. Oneth, who sensed his fear and panic had risen on his hind legs and bugled out a cry, moving off the bed he'd used in an effort to protect his mate. If anyone had been asleep moments ago, after that cry they would all be awake now! Oneth was too distraught by K'vys's wild thoughts to understand that she was helping him, not hurting him.
K'vys finally managed to push her hands away, which also caused him to tumble out the other side of the bed and land with a thump onto the hard ground. His elbow had connected with the ground, sending sharp, shooting pains up his arm. That was when K'vys finally passed out again.

Once things had settled down in the infirmary, Ceinwen went about the task of stowing away the rest of her herbs and taking stock of their medicines while the hyssop tea brewed. It was quite late by the time the tea was ready. The majority of the patients were sleeping soundly and she saw that Echo was napping in a chair. Rather than wake the room, she moved the tea to cool. It could be reheated as needed. Coughs tended to be worse in the early morning hours. If she could time it right, she would be ready with hot tea for the patients when they awoke.
She went off in search of someplace to sleep and was happy to find that the infirmary had accommodations off to one side. Making her way to the small cot, she made herself comfortable and drifted off to sleep.
Ceinwen had woken early and put the kettle on, then went to freshen up for the day. Odd sounds coming from the patient area caused her concern and she rushed out to see what was going on. As she came around the corner, she was shocked to see the young brown dragon raise up on his hindquarters and cry out. The noise startled her and she recoiled slightly in midstride. The sight of K’vys flailing in panic pushed aside any trepidation she felt as she rushed to his side.
By the time she reached him, he was out cold on the floor. “Blast the shell and sear the skin,” she cursed and she dropped to her knees on the floor beside him. “What in blazes happened,” she demanded as she began to examine him for further injury.

Echo realized that everything was failing. Her head hurt. She had a headache from waking up so fast. Of course. Of course something like this would happen; she knew it would happen. She blinked and held her head, watching the newly unconscious boy. Her head dropped to her hands before she picked it up and looked at Ceinwen. Great, just great. Echo needed some food. She hadn’t eaten since early yesterday. No wonder why her head swam. But she smiled easily enough, and the smile was genuine. “Yeah, I admit I messed up.” She said, her left hand absently rubbing the back of her neck.
Then she looked at the Brown, who had before just yelled at her and the whole infirmary. She could hear people waking around her, and she groaned. She had hoped they would stay asleep. “This is why I chose Dragonhealing. They are so much better to work with.” She gestured to the boy, “He landed pretty hard on his elbow, but other than that, and besides the randomly numbed leg, he looks to be about fine.”
She ran her hand through her hair, and then stood up. “Yeah, I’m sorry.” She sighed, and then stood up, “Hey, Oneth, your rider is okay, K’vys is fine.” She said, standing. She did not dare go closer to him, but her eyes surveyed him. The mess he made splattered his bed, but she did not look at that. She had seen worse, from larger dragons unable to go between. It was only the smell that got her, and even then she didn’t crinkle her nose.
Oneth looked fine, and even his wings seemed better. At least, Echo had seen him move them, as he jumped to help his rider. Another smile crossed her face. Yes, he seemed to be fine. The muscles were moving fantastically, and, though he might have soreness and pain, it was obviously nothing like last night. She could assess him even from where she was standing just by looking at the way he moved and stood protectively over His.
She folded her arms, “I tried to get the numbweed on, but he was in too much pain and was very defensive. It didn’t help that he swallowed the drink too quickly.” But then, that was also her fault, too. She had a headache, but she shouldn’t have tried to help the poor Brownrider. At least not without first seeing if he was able to withstand it. It was her fault. She berated herself.
“Well, at least Oneth is fine now.” She said, as if that was any reconciliation for what had happened. She turned to Oneth, “Oneth, may you move so we may put K’vys up on the cot again? I did not mean any harm, I was just trying to help.”

Ceinwen was ticked, but one look at Echo’s face and Ceinwen was empathetic to her situation. She knew that Echo had meant to help, but K’vys was her patient and her responsibility, not Echo’s. She was sure the other journeywoman would have felt the same ire if the circumstances were reversed and Ceinwen had made an effort to help the young dragon and ended up causing him further injury.
K’vys seemed much the same with the exception of his elbow. It was red and was beginning to swell. Rather than focus her attention on Echo, she zeroed in on K’vys and his needs. Looking behind her, she nudged her head toward one of the drudges for assistance. With the young man’s help, she gently lifted the unconscious brownrider back onto his cot and situated his legs so that the area would not rub against each other without great effort on his part to do so. Once he was settled Ceinwen moved to stand beside Echo.
“I appreciate that you were trying to help,” Ceinwen said softly so that none of the onlookers could hear her comments, but her tone had a distinct edge to it. “His legs are tender do to the heat rash. He likely rubbed the flesh against something, which would account for any sharp pain. In a case like this, numbweed is not the best choice as his legs need to be kept dry and out of direct contact with anything that can aggravate the injury. It was my intention to give him a small dose of fellis to ease his aches when he awoke.” Ceinwen paused and looked into her eyes. This close to her it was impossible not to notice the very slight difference in their height and the unusual color of her eyes. Once again Ceinwen began to feel her displeasure be replaced with empathetic concern. “I don’t mean to scold,” she added with softness in her tone and reached out a hand and patted her lightly on the shoulder. “I would hope that when I take a misstep that you would correct me.” Ceinwen took a step back and gave her a small smile, hoping she would understand. Ceinwen was an herbalist, she knew the best uses of the herbs to treat injuries and pain and many, many other things. Yet, she had no idea how to interact with a dragon. They each had area's of expertise and it was important that they shared that knowledge with one another. It was how their craft survived. Turning she went back to K’vys’s side.
She tried to decide if it was better to let him sleep or rouse him so she could discuss his condition and any other injuries or aches he may be feeling. First she would clean off his legs as gently as she could. Using the bowl of clean water, mild soap and a soft cloth, she dabbed gently to remove and clean the excess numbweed from his skin and the surrounding area on his pants, then used a dry cloth to pat away the excess moisture. Once that was complete she took another look at his elbow. It was most defiantly swollen, so she took some strips of cloth and created a sling that would hold the arm close to his side and prevent further injury. Once those tasks were complete, she saw to it that the tea she had prepared was distributed to those who needed it then went to get fresh water and a clean rag. K’vys needed water or tings would go from bad to worse very quickly. Returning to his side, she sat on a stool and lifted his head, cradling it in one arm as she slowly dripped some of the water onto his dry lips.

Post by K'vys and Oneth on Jul 13, 2010 13:07:22 GMT -5
Oneth had shifted back when he felt that K'vys was not being attacked. The young brown was still confused and without his lifemate's guidance he wasn't sure what to do. A soft, almost whimpering sound escaped him, both as he felt the slight tenderness of his own muscles and in distress over the condition of K'vys. He tried to encourage him, but K'vys didn't respond. Oneth, sad and fearful, eyes whirling grey with deep worry. Even his hide seemed to loss much of it's luster. Oneth needed reassurance, but the one person he needed it from was unable to give it.
K'vys, meanwhile, didn't stir as he was placed back in the bed. The shock of what had just happened kept his body from rousing.
He suddenly felt something tickling against his mouth. K'vys seemed to stir slightly from the depths of his mind that his body had sent him to heal and recover.
A soft moan escaped him as his lips parted slightly, his parched tongue trying to drink in the much needed moisture.
As more water dripped onto his lips, K'vys finally stirred, awakening with a gasping breath.
"Oneth," he managed to choke out through his parched throat. "Oneth?" K'vys's eyes darted open and he tried to rise, only to cry out in pain as his arm shifted.
I am here. Do not fear. The brown's voice, still panicked a bit from having lost contact with his for so long, seemed to settle at hearing K'vys. He crooned soothing thoughts to his mate, trying to calm him, to keep him from harming himself more.
K'vys's head collapsed back onto the pillow. His eyes closing for a moment as he drew in a few deep breaths to try and get through the pain that had shot up his arm.
"Where am I?" he asked, opening his eyes, finally turning them towards Ceinwen. For a moment, he thought his mother sat beside him, but then he blinked and realized it was not her. His heart seemed to falter at that as he wilted a bit, recalling that his mother would never sit beside him again. K'vys wanted to roll over and cry again, but his body hurt so much he didn't think he could move.

Echo knew she would get it. She just knew it, and she was ready. At least it was Ceinwen. If it were her father, the berating might have been much worse. Faranth, no, scratch that, it would be ten times worse. But the fact that she had injured a rider in the process made Echo clench her stomach. Actually, her stomach clenched for her, so she had no need to clench it herself. She listened to what Ceinwen told her, and her head bobbed up and down with understanding. Yes, she knew.
If Ceinwen had been messing with Oneth, and Oneth had gotten hurt, Echo would have probably wondered why Ceinwen had tried to help the dragon. Echo heard the tone behind Ceinwen’s soft words. She didn’t mean to scold, but Echo took it more than Ceinwen meant because of her groggy state. She blinked, and nodded, “I am very sorry, Ceinwen, but I did not see you and he would probably have woken up the whole Weyr. It was not my intention to hurt him more, and I will be more respectful of which patients are others.” She didn’t want to add ‘and I’ve just been so tired,’ so instead she forced a smile. Everyone was tired nowadays, weren’t they? Instead, when Ceinwen continued that she would hope that Echo would correct her, Echo grinned, “Yes, I will definitely help you.” Her grin was real this time as she added, “and maybe we can trade craft secrets sometime.”
When Ceinwen returned to K’vys, Echo’s eyes traveled to Oneth. K’vys was awake again, and Oneth had visibly settled. But Echo, while she could have lived with the mess Oneth had expelled any other day, Echo’s brain was not liking this mess. So she told Ceinwen she would be back quickly and where were all the drudges? before turning to find some drudges. It took a good minute or so to find one asleep. Now Echo was never a mean person, so when she woke the drudge up nicely, she woke him up nicely. But he woke quick enough, for, if he hadn’t, she would have started rousing him harder. “I’ve got a job for you to do, you think you can do it?” The drudge, having woken up enough to know, somewhat, what was going on, nodded. “See that little brown dragon over there? He expelled his stomach over there, and I would love if you could clean it. Will you do that?” The drudge nodded, and Echo thanked him. Some drudges were worse than that… much, much worse.
The drudge quickly got to work, finding all the necessary tools, and Echo breathed easy, even if the stench still filled the air. Well, at least it would be gone soon enough. For now she would focus on Oneth—it seemed most of the infirmary’s other occupants had fallen back asleep. “Good morning, Oneth, K’vys. I’m Echo, a Dragonhealer. I’m sorry for the scare, Oneth, I was just trying to help your rider.” As if that made up for anything. At least the Brown was a might bit happier than he was last night. “Oneth, I am going to check your wings again to see if they need more numbweed or if you’re fine.”
(( =P Leave it there, just in case Oneth declines my offer. ))
