Having rested for a bit, L'yst found new orders awaiting him when he awoke. Woreth told him that R'enh, the bronzerider who had been organizing much of the escape with the goldrider Maram, had asked him to join a small band of riders who would fly to the south to see what supplies they could gather.
Grabbing a cup of Klah and a bowl of whatever the mash was they had managed to cook over the open flame, L'yst made quick work of the simple meal.
I will eat on our journey, L'yst shook his head. Leave it to Woreth to be a step ahead.
That's fine my friend, let's go join the others.
L'yst and Woreth made their way to the edge of the encampment and waited for the others in the Patrol party to arrive. One of them would surely be in charge of this mission. L'yst was well used to taking his orders from the higher ranking riders and their dragons.
I hope we find lots of wherries, came the rumbling voice of Woreth. L'yst had to chuckle as he reached up to scratch his lifemates eye ridge while they waited.
Tag to the others who are going on this mission!

The bluerider was fretting over his dragon. The mass movement of the remaining dragonriders was a long haul, especially for those who didn't have much endurance. Z'ris knew that the blue dragon had pushed himself far too hard the days before, even though his dragon protested again and again that it wasn't such a big deal. They had gotten away, and that had stayed alive, didn't that matter at all? The game that they were playing now was survivability, and Kardenzoth seemed quite eager to excel in it by any means. The dragonrider had been up for a few hours, he had gotten used to nights with nearly no sleep as of late, namely because of the issues that had frothed over in an angry boil. Z'ris was surveying his dragon now while he slept. One whirling eye opened, the many lids retracting to survey the rider that watched him.
I'm not sleeping. I'm basking. The eye closed and the dragon huffed. The sun is nice here, not cold and bitter.
"Oh I'm sure you like it." Z'ris muttered the words beneath his breath, rolling his eyes as he did so. The blue would be ecstatic to hear of where they were going next, then. The dragons eyes opened again, as if the mere thought of it within the bluerider's mind had sparked up some curiosity. The blue stood then, eyeing him carefully. The dragonrider waved his hand at the blue, moving to grab himself a mug of whatever was warm. His stomach wasn't particularly grumbly, so food wasn't going to be a big deal. His appetite had never been something to fawn over, in fact, it seemed to just be void most of the time. Kardenzoth didn't appreciate it too much, simply because he worried about his rider.
Mine, I don't recognize many people here. The comment from the blue stung the pit of Z'ris' stomach. He knew it didn't intend to, but it still ached. No, it didn't seem that many people from High Reaches Weyr had shown up. Shown up yet, he reminded himself sharply.
Z'ris exhaled deeply, bringing his newly found mug of warm klah up to his lips and taking a long drink. He would have to push those memories out, now. He couldn't dwell on the negative when there was to much to be done. He needed to be positive if they were going to try and start out and thrive. They didn't really have a choice about that matter, to be quite frank. Z'ris moved forwards, spotting what seemed to be another bluerider ahead. A smile spread over his lips as he neared. At least they all had something to do rather than squirm about and fret.
"Hey, I suppose you're also on this patrol we have, huh?" Z'ris spoke in a casual manner as he neared the other rider. "I'm Z'ris, rider of Kardenzoth, from High Reaches." He stuck out his hand in a friendly manner, quite aware suddenly that that title was exceedingly long. Well, he wouldn't be from High Reaches for too long, seeing they did need to set up something new somewhere.

"I'm Z'ris, rider of Kardenzoth, from High Reaches."
L'yst turned at the approach of the other rider and his blue dragon, taking the hand that was offered him.
"L'yst, rider of Woreth," He indicated over his shoulder his own blue lifemate. "From Telgar...well before Telgar was nearly destroyed," L'yst's tone was full of sorrow at that thought. "I'm just glad that we've saved all we have. I wish we could have saved more."
With a sigh, L'yst looked around at the people encamped on the small island.
Woreth, meanwhile spoke to Kardenzoth. 'I am Woreth. Welcome brother. We fly today.'
L'yst turned back to Z'ris and added, "Woreth has informed me that others will be coming. I know we are expected to fly a sort of scouting patrol over the Southern islands and Southern continent. Have you heard any more?"

These past few days had been the longest of their lives. T’nev and Raeth had started out fleeing a dying Weyr that would not follow them. Desperately they clung to the hope that their queen and friends had survived. There had been time, if they had heeded the warning, if the storm had not come so strongly so soon…then they could have made it. The brownrider and his could simply not give up hope that their small group was not the only to survive from Ista Weyr. T’nev and brown Raeth had not had time to grieve, the Wingseconds found themselves in a position of authority, with all those with them looking for direction. Raeth had flown for long hours after the rest of the group rested; the brown had reached new heights to find safe passage through the storm. They did not wish to travel between as it had been incredibly dangerous of late…especially when the fire rained down. Eventually they had found gold Chalarath and their hope had been restored. When they had traveled long days without seeing a single soul one had to wonder if they were the only ones left. And they did not travel with a queen, their livelihood, the entire dragon species, had appeared to be at risk. Finding the gold queen along with the gathered riders from other Weyrs had lent them new strength.
T’nev and Raeth had personally assisted in leading the effort to moving to new large islands. They needed a new home, somewhere safe from the storm that assailed them. So they had island hopped, Raeth had worked himself to exhaustion. Even now they had just recovered from the migration from the mainland. Working all day every single day had put a strain on the Raeth and his, but they were responsible for those that came with them, and they soon accepted even more responsibility from the man in charge of the entire operation. So now they had been entrusted with a new mission. R’enh knew that the islands surrounding their new home had to be scouted. If anything dangerous was about it would need to be taken care of. So they would fly south, but not alone. No there were several riders coming together for the meeting.
T’nev mine, two blueriders have already arrived.
You let blues meet you to the rendezvous? This has taken a larger toll on my Raeth then I thought
The large brown dragon growled slightly, but it was in a playful manner. The dragon was indeed incredibly large for his kind. Blues were supposed to be smaller than all the bronzes, but Raeth was able to meet more than one bronze in size and stamina. The dragon was proud of his born skill and ability to keep up; it was how Raeth and T’nev had made wingsecond so early. Now that same skill was keeping them incredibly busy.
I would have been here long before had mine not insisted on a meal first.
You are not one to speak of needing meals at the most inopportune of times.
It is not Raeth’s fault that you starve him
T’nev grinned as the large brown swept low, coming to a soft landing next to Woreth. Normally a blue could hold his own next to a brown, but Raeth was a great size larger. Woreth was a beautiful blue, a good respectable size with a clean hide or royal blue that seemed to glitter with a silvery gleam in the light. In comparison Raeth’s hide looked dull, a brown so deep it looked black, there was no speck of light to be caught on his clean hide. The large brown turned to the two blues and rumbled a low welcome.
Are you all that has gathered so far?
T’nev turned to the other riders as his dragons spoke with their dragons.
“T’nev, rider of Raeth, from a place formerly known as Ista Weyr. Have you been told what we are to do?”
The brownrider wanted to make sure everyone was on the same page.

L'yst turned at the pair that arrived next. A brown and his rider. Perhaps they were in charge. That would not have surprised him.
"T'nev, well met, I'm L'yst and this is Z'ris. We are ready." He paused a moment as he heard Woreth speak with Raeth.
Others are joining us now, came the blues reply. And true to form a few other riders of various dragons seemed to join the group, waiting for instruction.
In answer to T'nev's inquiry, L'yst replied. "I was told we will make a sweep of the Southern Islands and Continent, looking for viable food and materials as well as hazards. Is there more to our mission?" L'yst looked around, noting that T'nev was still the highest ranking dragon in the company, therefore he would lead until others arrived.

Post by B'lor and Imahyth on Jun 26, 2010 17:28:21 GMT -5
It had been a hectic few days, and B'lor was grateful for that. He was so busy that he barely had time to dwell on the loss of almost everyone he knew at Fort Weyr. So few riders had come with them. Losing Carilla had been bad enough. Now, he felt as if he had lost his entire family--not just blood family, but the friends at the Weyr who were so close they were almost like kin. At least he still had Lorcan, although the boy seemed incredibly distraught. B'lor had at first considered taking Lorcan on this expedition, in the hopes of piquing his interest at something or anything, but it was too important to bring the weyrbrat as a passenger.
At least Imahyth seemed to be enjoying himself. The bronze picked up on his rider's grief and worry, and he wondered about the rest of the Weyr, but he also enjoyed the warm sun of the island. And, he also enjoyed being one of few bronzes in the Weyr. Now that was a new thing for B'lor, too. The promotion to Wingsecond had been sudden, and he probably wouldn't have had such an opportunity back in Fort. It seemed like a twisted bit of serendipity to him but he was trying to enjoy it anyway.
Not that it was all about fun and privilege. Being a Wingsecond was a big responsibility, and today would be the first proof of that. He was supposed to lead the expedition, and it would be interesting to see how the other riders cooperated. B'lor wondered if they would be bitter about having to listen to a new leader, someone who wasn't from their Weyr.
Imahyth landed by the two blues and brown. He recognized the big Brown from before. Hello all. I am Imhayth. Are we ready? he asked, clearly ready to get to work.
B'lor was a bit chagrined at being the last to arrive, but he didn't show it. It seemed as though T'nev was already taking over. He felt a flash of irritation, but quickly banished it. He would have to learn to work with a variety of different people now, and it was natural that Brownriders would have to take a bigger leadership role with so few Bronzeriders.
"Good afternoon to you all," he said, smiling around at everyone. "My name's B'lor, and this is Imahyth, formerly of Fort. I believe this is everyone." He eyed the Blues, wondering if they were too tired, but their hides seemed bright and healthy, so he decided that it would be impolite to ask.

I am Woreth. I and mine are ready. The dragon responded to the bronzedragons call.
L'yst heard Woreth addressing the other dragon and nodded his own head as if in emphasis. He saw the look the bronze rider sent his way and stood a bit taller. Just because they were smaller did not mean they were not suited for this mission.
Do not worry mine. We could outfly them to skirt the grounds. We fly fast.
I never doubted you, my Woreth. You are a magnificent dragon. He could hear the purr from Woreth at the praise.
Once everything had been laid out as expected, L'yst mounted Woreth and with a mighty flap of wings, the two were airborn, waiting for the others to join them on this flight to survey the South.

T'nev nodded to both of the blueriders, he had noticed that all had been working more than they were used too over these long days. These riders should be commended for their work and their willingness to undertake yet another mission was to be appreciated. The blue dragons and theirs had to work longer hours then they were used to and their speed had to be utilized to the utmost. Raeth might have been larger then the blues, but he could not match them for quickness, there were things a green and blue could do that he was unable to. So both T'nev and his put much respect into the simply nodd.
"Well met L'yst and Z'ris. It is good to see you taking part in this patrol, hopefully we'll work under together under better circumstances soon"
Dragons and theirs will always fly together in the worst of times. This is what we are meant to do. Destroy thread and protect the land. We unite and are stronger for tragedy mine.
I would rather we fight a foe that can be defeated...this fire is not like any thread I've seen.
We will remain strong my T'nev.
Then even as they spoke together more dragon's and their riders arrived. For a moment T'nev was surprised there were more coming, perhaps this scouting mission would be more spread out then he had previously thought. He had thought many of these riders would be performing different tasks. T'nev was opening his mouth to introduce himself to the newcomers when a shadow blotted out the sun. It seemed their leader had finally decided to show his face. The large bronze and his landed nearby, a slight annoyance coming from B'lor. Raeth however was glad to see Imayth and turned his multifaceted eyes to the task of inspecting the bronze. He had seen the large dragon before but had yet to introduce himself.
Greetings Imayth, I am Raeth, mine is T'nev and we are all gathered and ready.
Meanwhile T'nev turned his attention to B'lor and sensed slight annoyance in the bronze's gaze, did he think Raeth and he were standing out of line? Well hadn't they proved themselves more than capable already? They weren't going to start disobeying the leader of the scouting message but T'nev was slightly perturbed by the B'lor's gaze. It was not the best first impression.
"It is an honor B'lor. I am T'nev, rider of brown Raeth, formerly of Ista Weyr."
He left out the part where he might also mention that he had already been a wingsecond to a rather excellent wingleader, but the memory of his bronze leader was still too fresh. It still hurt to remember Ista...and to speak of his wingleader...well it was not yet time to do such a thing. So he calmed his nerves as he looked once more at B'lor, confidence showing clearly in his eyes.
"All are ready."

Kardenzoth had joined the rest of the dragons, and continued to regard them all with an amiable and open gaze. Thankfully, the blue had always been open to a number of things, and he was quite sociable. He certainly didn't mind meeting new dragons--well, he didn't really have a chance given the current situation, they had to work together and get things done, for the sake of, well, everyone they had managed to save. The blue nearly beamed at the other blue dragon as he spoke to him.
Well met, Woreth! May you fly strong and high. Z'ris was exceptionally relieved that his dragon wasn't making a fool of himself, not yet at least. He, meanwhile, was nodding at what L'yst had said to him. Telgar, oh shards, every Weyr had their own issue, didn't they?
"You did good, we all did good. That's all we need right now." He flashed the rider a genuine smile. The bluerider had opened his mouth to answer the question, assuring him that he had heard naught but the same thing, when the other rider had stepped up and introduced himself.
A brownrider, yes, well this was all exceptionally good. Z'ris' hopes were picking up a bit, they did have a strong team so far. Only the strongest and those willing to, well, survive had actually made it through the disaster and banded together to try and forge this new beginning. Color didn't matter here, when it came to dragons. What mattered now, above all else, was numbers. They needed every pair of wings that they would lay their eyes on. Z'ris had stayed a bit silent during the exchanges, not due to anything but him listening and soaking the information in that he heard.
"Goodday B'lor, and T'nev." He bowed his head, his scraggly hair dropping in a few locks over his dark eyes. He brushed them back in a manner that seemed most mechanic, as if he's done that procedure all too often within his lifetime.
"I'm Z'ris." He had attempted to choke up the destination from which he hailed from to the bronzerider, but it was something akin to grief that caused the word to stick in his throat. Instead, he simply closed his mouth and smiled, albeit a bit painfully. They would have to get things done, and he had to remind himself that everyone was dealing with grief, everyone was dealing with loss, and everyone had baggage, now. No one here can compare with the woes of others only because each had been equally tragic. Z'ris held himself straight up, though, disallowing the creeping haunt of loss to climb into his spine and curve it into a slump.
He had to be strong.
Kardenzoth here, and yes, ready and waiting.
The dragon didn't have issues with speaking to colors that were above his rank, simply because he didn't fear them. Of course he obeyed any order that was given and followed it through, but he wasn't abashed when it came to talking to other dragons. Kardenzoth, thankfully, kept himself quiet so far. There would be time for talk later, and later is when that would happen. Now, they had a mission to do, and they would stay true to it and follow it out.

L'yst, already astride his dragon and hovering in the skies, waited for the others to join them, patting Woreth's neck to soothe the giant creature who was anxious to begin the journey.
I can see the lands ahead, the voice of the dragon rumbled in his mind.
As can I, my friend, yet I don't see the large island they were hoping to find, L'yst returned the thought. Are the others coming? He inquired of the dragon.
Woreth turned his thoughts to the group that was still waiting on land. We can see the islands ahead of us. L'yst and I will fly to the first. We await you there.
With that, the blue dragon's wings moved with a mighty heave of power and then the two were gliding out over the clear waters of the sea. The island was not far, and soon they had landed for a brief respite, ready to take off again as soon as the others joined them.
This island would not be big enough for our home. Woreth spoke with his rider as they waited. But I wish to swim in the waters.
L'yst chuckled and patted his lifemate on the neck. Not yet, my Woreth. We have a job to do first. Then you can bask in the waters all you want.

"Well met, T'nev, Z'ris," B'lor said, nodding at the Blue and Brown riders. He noticed that Z'ris didn't say where he was from, and guessed that it was simply too difficult. They were all missing their old Weyrs, which was even more reason to work together and form this new home.
Let's go! Imahyth said excitedly, his eyes whirling quickly. He wanted to see the other islands. B'lor smiled a little, telling his dragon to take off. Imahyth leaped into the air, and with a few beats of his powerful wings was aloft. The bronze flew behind the smaller blues, since they were faster.
The bronze flew steadily over the sparkling ocean water, and B'lor relaxed. This was nice, a good change from the stressful flying they had done when they left Fort. When they reached the island, Imahyth circled down to land beside Woreth.
"This looks nice," B'lor commented, looking around at the pretty little island. It wasn't very large, but he imagined it would be a nice retreat for riders in their free time. He waited for the others, not planning to linger here long. He did plan on returning sometime, though. A swim sounded tempting for both rider and dragon.

Z'ris nodded at the bronzerider, flashing him a genuine smile as he turned towards his dragon then. Quickly he pulled at the straps, double-checking that they were indeed set and safe. The last thing he wanted to do was slide off his dragon and perishing after he had worked so hard to keep alive not but the days beforehand. That would be quite the unfortunate mistake. The leathers were tight, and Z'ris wasted little time in hopping up on the blue and readying for flight. Kardenzoth huffed briefly, his whirling eyes watching as the other blue took off, followed by the bronze. Z'ris could tell he was antsy, but in a different, more positive way than before.
This wasn't flying for their lives, this was a sweep. Yes, it was important, but they weren't flying towards some unmentioned spot in the ocean to try and stay alive. Survival and desperately clinging for life were to different things, and this flight was surely based around the former. The dragonrider patted his dragon's hide, and at once the beast sprung upwards into the air. The blue had been poised, ready to take off, sprung up and waiting for the signal to go. Once Z'ris had given it, he was free. The dragon darted up into the air, and Z'ris found himself holding his breath as he did so.
Of course, he was holding it out of some form of excitement.
'Rismine, I believe we're jumping from island to island, so you don't need to worry about prolonged flight time.
The dragonrider's eyebrows shot upwards, and despite himself Z'ris smiled. "Listening in to my thoughts again, are you?" Indeed, the rider had been thinking about if the ride would be tough for the dragons. It didn't seem to be so. They were going along the chain, scouting for supplies. Nothing was too hard for the blue to do whatsoever. The blue flew low against the water, raking the cold ocean and spraying up a fine mist with his fore claws. This was all fine and fun, Z'ris would only stop him if he got him wet.
The blue followed the others, coming to an abrupt halt near both dragons as they landed on the first stop along their route. This was, dare he say it, almost relaxing. The tension that had mounted up recently seemed to dissipate as they went on. Z'ris nodded at B'lor's comment, looking around from atop Kardenzoth.
"Nice indeed. Very relaxing. I can only hope Kardenzoth doesn't get too comfortable here." He patted the blue, who snorted his disgruntlement at the comment his rider made. Ah, yes, there was Z'ris slipping into a shade of his former self. He knew that they were to scout for supplies, but this particular island seemed to be bare of anything that would be useful in constructing a new place to live--then again, it was one of the smaller ones. Oh he could only hope that they did find something worthwhile on their outing.

L'yst and Woreth did not have to wait long as soon the other dragons in their scouting party joined up with them. He watched some others take a different route. Two different scouting parties obviously. Looked like it was just him, Z'ris, T'nev, and B'lor.
"This looks nice,"
L'yst looked over at the bronze rider and smiled, shouting. "Yes, wouldn't be a bad place to stop and rest if we had the time. I know Woreth would enjoy it." The blue dragon rumbled in answer to that.
L'yst looked to the mass of land that could just barely be discerned in the distance. That was where they were headed, at least he thought so, unless it was another island.
Maybe they could bypass the island hopping if they could fly straight on to that point he saw in the distance. Woreth could make it that far without difficulty. L'yst asked Woreth to pass on his thoughts to the others, especially and bronze and brown riders, to see what they thought.

B'lor sighed a little, wishing they could linger here. Just forget all their troubles in the ocean breeze. But that couldn't be, at least not until everyone was settled in the new Weyr. "We should move on. Let's fly to the main continent now. I don't think the other islands will be much different from this," B'lor told the others. He felt his dragon's reluctance, and patted Imahyth's neck.
Don't worry, you can swim another time. I wonder what we'll find on the Southern continent? The bronze perked up at that, eager once more to explore the new place. At B'lor's signal Imahyth took to the air again, this time taking the lead for the longer flight to the Southern continent.
***
The Southern Continent was stretched out beneath them, looking as tropical and lush as the islands they had passed. B'lor had no way of knowing how big the continent was. Imahyth flew lower, searching for a good place to land. There...what was that? the bronze asked suddenly. It took B'lor a moment to realize what his dragon was referring to.
He could see flashes of gold, bronze, and other colors below. Not dragons, certainly? Imahyth didn't hear any dragons, and the quick flashes he saw suggested something smaller.
B'lor looked to the other riders, wondering if they had seen them too. "I think we should go and investigate!"

L'yst, who had been flying along with the others received the message from B'lor via Woreth. They had been scouting for a short while, with little to report. The land was lush, there were foodsteeps aplenty and animals roaming the lands. All a good sign. It seemed as those this part of the land was untouched by the devastation that had struck their own homes.
Twisting, he quickly saw the darting splotches of color down near the surface of land. Sending back via Woreth that he agreed, L'yst and Woreth dropped from their current altitude closer to the ground level. They had just a moment's glimpse of the strange little creatures, before they vanished. They had looked like the little miniature dragons, or at least L'yst thought they had.
I agree Lystmine, but I did not see them clearly. L'yst didn't see the point in stopping, except two things happened in that moment. Woreth expressed a need to rest momentarily, and L'yst saw something that nearly seemed to sparkle deep in the sands as the sun glinted off of it.
"Something is down there!" He called out, knowing Woreth would relay his message to the others. Soon, the pair had glided down onto the sands, waiting for the others to join them.
