Darvin leaned back, briefly, against the wall, blowing out a heavy breath, and wiping the sweat from his brow. He stepped back from the wood, briefly admiring both the fine quality of the grain, and the almost polished-smooth sanded surface. He brushed his hand over it, wiping away the thin coat of sawdust which clung to everything within reach, including a member of his Hold, who hardly looked up from where he was using a small, precious powered saw to trim down the end of the log. He smiled, warmly, and called out; The man stopped the saw, and looked up.
Darvin gestured aside, toward a distant small table and jar of lukewarm Klah. "Let's take a break, Jemis. We've been at this a few hours already." The man chuckled in reply, and nodded, his ears still ringing from the whining of the woodsaw. They sat at the small table, and each splashed a cup full of the lukewarm drink, leaning back comfortably in small chairs, to drink it down. There was a thin film of sawdust on everything, including the Klah, but the two men hardly noticed.
Darvin glanced, pridefully, at the half-constructed base of what was soon to be a home. It was a log structure, with poured concrete around the base, and built up around the logs themselves. It was slightly more efficient than solid concrete structures, and also made the interior slightly more... Homey. He nodded. That's the word for it.
He set down the cup, and grabbed a second, clean cup, filling it up with cool river water from the pitcher next to the Klah, washing down the cinammon-sweet flavour with crisp, clean water.
The silence was blessed, a reprieve from the hard and noisy work of building a house, despite the distant sounds of other men hard at work doing just the same things.
Runner Hold was coming along very nicely. The Holding itself was set low into the foothills of the mountains, mostly external, due to the low slope, with concrete poured around and over snugly-fit logs, to create something of a long, low fort. The rest of the Holding was sprouting up like gray-edged mounds around it, reaching from the foothills to the broad, swift river, which flowed to the nearby ocean. The ground was flat, with tall grasses growing and swaying as far north as the eye could see, with mountains distantly edging the east, and looming to the south. To the west was pristine, glittering ocean, silver-bright in the near-noon sunlight, where the sun itself had not yet quite peeked over the high mountains to the east, its' reflection on the endless ocean the brightest sign of the coming 'dawn'. Off to the west, overlooking the cliffs which stood sentinel over the sea, was a tall, slender spire of rock, tipped with a flat, and nearly level promontory, which nonetheless had a slight westward tilt.
He glanced northward, toward where some men were building another necessity - A large wooden bridge, spanning the river at a rather manageable ford, with concrete pillars and a rare, but light and necessary, angled metal roof of light aluminum. On the other side of the river was yet more plains, edged with forests far and away, from which were returning two drawn carts of the fine-grained wood.
He looked back toward the Hold, and thought, wistfully of Evelie. She was young, beautiful, very smart, loving, caring, compassionate - Wise. That, too, was a word which strongly lent itself to her. She was blind, though he didn't know very much about the actual circumstances of it. She was a former Harper, and still played, now and then, when the mood or need would strike.
As if his thoughts were a beacon, in the near-distance, he thought he saw someone approaching.

Evie struggled to stay focused on her surroundings as she walked towards what would soon be Runner Hold. It was difficult, her thoughts kept distracting her, but sound and smell only went so far and there were no walls to guide her out here. Only the distant sound of men at work. Still, she’d walked this way enough times now to know roughly where she was going. The distracting thoughts were the same she’d been having for a few months now, but no less insistent for all their familiarity. Today, she was going to do something about them. She was certain Darvin would say yes. Well. Mostly certain.
Soon the smell of sawdust overpowered that of the tall grasses and mingled with a hint of klah. Sawdust meant construction, and klah meant people. She was nearing some of the workers.
“Hello?” she called, “I’m looking for Darvin, is he here?”

Post by Eralynn and Liirith on Aug 19, 2011 16:40:48 GMT -5
Eralynn had received her assignment for the day during breakfast, and couldn't be more excited to escape from the confines of the Weyr for a day. Apparently there was a new hold emerging, led by former rider Darvin- and she and Liirith were going to be sent to bring supplies and be a helping hand for the day.
Surely the Green that was the size of a Blue could be a great help.
After leaving her quarters geared up and ready to go in her riding leathers, Era arrived in the weyrbowl where weyrlings and candidates alike were finishing tightening the straps on a large bundle that would dangle below Liirith as she flew to the new Runner Hold.
Eramine! let's go! These hatchlings do not know what they are doing- I can't wait to leave them behind.
Laughing at her dragon's comment on the inexperienced youngsters, Eralynn finally reached Liirith- and out of habit wrapped her arms around the forest green dragon's head without even thinking about it. Then, she stepped back to cast a dismissing glance to all her young helpers before climbing atop Liirith's back.
**Does everything feel secure to you?**
Yes.
**Then let's go! remember, you're going to have to take off just about vertically with that large package you're going to be carrying.**
Without another word, Liirith launched herself into the sky, her wings beating slightly quicker than normal with the extra weight of the parcel. Once Era was satisfied with their height, she relayed the image of their destination and they winked into the cold of -between-.
_________
Moments later, the duo appeared over the bustling sight of construction. There were men hurrying about seemingly everywhere- and for a moment Eralynn wasn't sure where a good place to land would be. While Liirith bugled an announcement of her own presence, Era instructed her to glide over to the flat, grassy clearing. The forest green dragon gracefully glided over to the location and then hovered while slowly allowing herself to lose altitude so the parcel that was dangling below her could arrive safely. Once it was down, she then angled herself just so she could land beside it without crushing or dragging it --she had been thoroughly warned against damaging it by Eralynn--. Once everyone was safely on the ground, Era dismounted and untied the package, allowing Liirith to be free. Then, she casually leaned against Liirith's side as she waited for the workers to retrieve the mass that was close to the size of 3 runner-beasts.

Darvin ran toward the landing Green, waving his arms and calling out - But the sounds of construction were far louder than his cries, and he slowed, as Liirith carefully avoided crushing the materials. A few sacks of powdered concrete, each terribly heavy on its' own, as well as some metal girders, each short, but thick, and with various links to connect them at the various necessary angles for construction.
Darvin stepped aside, and swept up behind Evelie, pausing to kiss the base of her neck, speaking softly to her, "I'm behind you." He stepped up, and moved to take her hand, glancing toward the now-landed dragon, with its' released bundle lying on the ground nearby. "There, Ev," he gestured slightly with the hand he was using to hold her own, "Eralynn, and green Liirith, with more supplies. Have you met her, before?" He canted his head, slightly, leaning closer to her, so that she could feel the gesture, with the brush of his stubbled jaw against her hair.
"What brings you out here, my darling?" He chuckled softly, breathing in the scent of her skin, warm, faint, and with a thin sheen of salty-sweet sweat.
After a moment, he replied, "And would you like to greet the Greenrider with me?" He called aside, briefly, gesturing for a few men to head toward the supplies and begin ferrying them back to the stockpile nearby.

Evie jumped as a dragon’s call suddenly rang out over the cacophany of the construction work. She managed to take a deep calming breath, just before a kiss on the back of her neck startled her. Darvin, she sighed to herself, smiling at his soft voice and the feel of his rough hand. The contrast was one of the things she loved about him.
“Eralynn, and green Liirith, with more supplies. Have you met her before?”
She turned her head in the direction of his gesture. Facing people, even though she couldn’t see them, was a habit she had yet to break. “No, I don’t think I have.” Evie grinned as she turned a little towards him, her free hand resting on his upper arm. He smelled primarily of sawdust and sweat, and he hadn’t shaved. Too busy building a home for such niceties.
“What brings you out here, my darling?”
A tingle went up her spine, both excited and suddenly nervous. She smiled, a trifle shyly. “I had something very important to ask you. It’s been on my mind a great deal recently... but I suppose it can wait, since we have a visitor,” the shyness disappeared as she declared, “And I would love to greet her with you.”

He grinned, and chuckled, softly, as he nodded. "Alright, then. We'll have plenty of time to speak, soon enough; Things are moving along rather nicely here, and ought to be done within the next couple days." He gestured slightly, more for the benefit of those still working than for Evelie's own; He spoke brief encouragement to each group he passed, as he led her, hand holding her own, toward the landed Green and her Rider.
"Hail, Eralynn. The supplies! I thank you; Any news from the Weyr?" He canted his head, smilingly, and, after a moment, inclined his head in greeting, "Also, Eralynn, Liirith, this is Evelie. Ev, Eralynn, and her Green, Liirith." He slid his right arm around Evelie's waist, offering out his left hand to Eralynn. He nodded, respectfully, to Liirith.

While Era waited to be greeted by Darvin- she had no idea where he was in the mix of sweat-covered men- she took in all the new sights and smells of the emerging Holding. It was going to be a wonderful place: close to the river and nestled in a flat area close to the mountains. They had done a wonderful job so far.
Finally, after a few moments of urging Liirith to stop eyeing the already-nervous runnerbeasts, there came a couple that emerged from the swarm of men. It was Darvin! and a companion of his... who was very pretty...
"Hail, Eralynn. The supplies! I thank you; Any news from the Weyr?"
A wide grin split across her face as she extended her arm and took his hand in hers in greeting. "Darvin!! Always such a pleasure! The Weyr is functioning, but I am thankful for the past week of no Threadfall. It's been so nice to ease the muscles and replenish the Flights."
"Also, Eralynn, Liirith, this is Evelie. Ev, Eralynn, and her Green, Liirith."
As Darvin introduced Era to Evelie, Eralynn switched her attention to the blonde woman. "Evelie? So nice to meet you. A friend of Darvin is a friend of mine. We're going to miss you at the Weyr, you know Darvin. Are you really relocating here?"
Then Eralynn became silent as Liirith rumbled her welcome to the two and voiced her two-cents to her rider.
Eramine... what is wrong with this woman's eyes? Can she not see?
**Liirith! sush! do not worry about it! Certainly don't make me bring it up; it's none of my business!**
As Era got the sense of Liirith grumbling, she gasped at what happened next
Since you cannot see, I think I will talk to you directly. I am Liirith. Would you like to scratch my eye-ridges? As Liirith bespoke Evelie, she brought her head much closer to this new woman- excited about the fact that she could have a new admirer.

Evie nodded with a small smile at Eralynn’s greeting... and froze solid. She grasped Darvin’s hand tight, her eyes widening at the sound of a voice in her head. It was a strange experience, bewildering and shocking and rather humbling. A dragon was actually speaking to her directly!
Mastering herself and shaking her head a little as if to clear her thoughts once more, Evie recovered from the surprise. “Liirith,” she said with a small bow, and slowly reached up to tentatively place her hand on the green’s head. “I would love to give you a scratch. I’ve never touched a dragon before,” this last was said with a trace of the awe she felt at the experience. She slowly moved her hand, marvelling at Liirith’s size, until she felt the eye-ridge beneath her fingertips and started gently scratching.

Darvin canted his head, smiling, "Really? You've never pet a dragon, before?" He seemed puzzled, and amused, squeezing her hand back, gently, and chuckling, "Be gentle with her, Liirith," he spoke, softly, but warmly.
He swept his gaze, briefly, over the supplies that were quickly being unpacked and moved away, mentally cataloguing the work yet to be done, and how far the influx of supplies would take them. Ought to just about finish things, if we stretch it a little. He nodded to himself, thoughtfully, and looked toward Eralynn.
"No Threadfall on the whole island?" He grunted. "I'm glad to hear it. And I... Yeah. I'm relocating here. Permanently." He grinned. "I gave up Lord Holdership of Dragon Hold a couple months ago, to take up a Minor Hold of my own. I'd rather leave the big, important stuff to someone younger - And, thankfully, well-qualified for the job. I'm still nearby, at the least, so anyone can stop by, if they'd like. How long will you be here?" He canted his head, questioningly. "If you need to stay overnight, we established a small, private weyr beside the Holding proper; The kitchens beneath keep the ground comfortably warm, I've been told. Have you both eaten?"
He caressed his thumb lightly over the back of Evelie's free hand, his other hand coming down to brush his fingertips down her wrist. His smile seemed to become a little warmer, as if content.

Liirith creened happily- a pleasant rumbling noise that was easily felt in the chests of the humans closest to her- as Evelie began scratching her eye ridges.
You are a natural! I will make sure Eramine brings us back here regularly., was the final thought projected into Evelie's mind for the moment. Privately, she sent a second quick message to her Eralynn.
Can I keep this one? She is marvelous!!
A grin spread across Eralynn's face as she processed the comment, not bothering to stop her laughter as she burst into a small fit. She quickly shot an apologetic glance to Darvin and then explained. "Sorry about that," she began between the last trail of giggles. "Liirith here seems to have taken a liking to you, Evelie- and would like to keep you."
Then, with a loving look to Liirith, she spoke aloud for the other two's sake. "However, my Dear Liirith, you know thats not an option. If she accepts, though- she can be our friend."
A happy rumble was all that Liirith responded with, her large muzzle gently pressing against Evelie in a cue to invite more rubbing.
While Era turned her back to her dragon to address Darvin, the Green continued to emit happy noises.
...I'm still nearby, at the least, so anyone can stop by, if they'd like. How long will you be here?" He canted his head, questioningly. "If you need to stay overnight, we established a small, private weyr beside the Holding proper; The kitchens beneath keep the ground comfortably warm, I've been told. Have you both eaten?"
"Good to hear! It seems that I'll now never have any trouble getting my second half to come visit if Evelie stays around. Liirith and I are here for the day, so feel free to let us know if any large objects need relocating. R'enh seemed to think that your new holding could stand for a bit of assistance." shaking her head in fear of overburdening Runner hold though at his generous offer, she countered, "oh this one here is well fed for another fortnight- and I've just finished a meal myself. We're simply here to help, and for the good company that is residing here."

OOC: Since I am starting this week back to college, please respond to this with something that I am not needed to respond to in turn. I deeply apologize for the great delay-many things happened at once offline for me.
Feel free to mention Era and Liirith helping out or assigning us to a duty and having them get to work. Hopefully, if my schedule clams down soon enough- I can jump back in and actually write out the end of the day- however if you need to leave the thread- by no means wait for me

Evie closed her eyes at the sensation Liirith’s rumbling caused. She giggled a little at the Green’s compliment, nodding her head in a small bow. Eralynn’s laughter made her open her eyes, her brow quirked up in silent question.
“Liirith here seems to have taken a liking to you, Evelie - and would like to keep you.”
Evie smiled as Eralynn continued talking, pleased with the idea. “I would be honored to be your friend, Liirith,” it took all of her former training as a Harper to keep from laughing as Liirith pressed against her, “and of course Eralynn’s as well.”
The big Green was certainly insistent, Evie chuckled to herself as she continued rubbing while listening to Era talk to Darvin. She decided she liked this rider, and looked forward to the possibility of seeing more of the pair.
“We're simply here to help, and for the good company that is residing here.”
“We’re glad to have you, both for the help and the company. If you’re not hungry, at least have Darvin pour you some klah, it seems like he always has a pot within arm’s reach while working,” she said with a loving grin back towards the man who held her hand.

Darvin grinned, as Ev and the Dragon got along, and rolled his eyes at Liirith's energetic possessiveness. "You two can visit any time you'd like," he said, after a moment, "Any Dragon and Rider will always find a home here, when they need it."
He smiled at Evelie, and laughed, feigning a gasp, "I do believe you're right!" He made a show of looking around himself, and then slowly, methodically took two long steps, and then a short one, ostentatiously reaching to his full length, to grab a pot of klah, still steaming in the cool air. "Now it's within arm's reach; I do have a reputation to uphold." He grinned, and grabbed up a few empty cups, and handing them out, one by one, as he filled them, to Evelie and Eralynn.
"It is good that you're here, however. We're still working on reinforcing the bridge, and we need to get a few things set up on the other side. We can't carry some of the heavier loads across the bridge until they're finished shoring it up. I believe Jax could use a hand." He gestured to a man standing on top of a mid-sized rock, shouting orders to a group of men who appeared to be trying to maneuver a piece of metal sheeting onto the roof of the bridge. "Also," he said, after a moment, "As you'd like, there'll be food set up near the Holding proper in a short while."
He paused a moment, and approached Eralynn, leaning in to whisper something to her, smiling. "That pillar of rock, to the northwest?" He said softly, not glancing in that direction. "There's a stack of supplies in storage we need to get up there, and Liirith could simplify that greatly. I intend to make Evelie somewhat of a gift, up there." He chuckled, quietly, then glanced aside at Liirith, "And don't you say anything," he said, a bit louder, smiling at the dragon. "It's a surprise."
He stepped back, and laughed, inclining his head gratefully for their assistance.
"So, Ev, what brings you out to the construction site this early? The sun's not yet over the mountain." He slid his arm once more around her shoulder, drinking deeply from his cup of klah in his other hand. "Not," he grinned, "That is isn't a pleasure to see you." He kissed the top of her head, and then canted his own, looking at her.

Evie stopped scratching Liirith with a murmured apology, carefully taking the cup Darvin offered her with both hands. She sipped at the hot liquid, quietly listening to Darvin explain the current status of the Hold’s construction to Era. He was suddenly quiet, whispering something Evie couldn’t quiet make out... A surprise? Just what do you have in mind, my dear, she wondered to herself with a grin.
With a demure smile, Evie waited until she was certain Liirith and Era were busy elsewhere to answer Darvin, simply enjoying the feel of his arm around her in the meantime.
“As I said before, I came out here to ask you a question,” she took a breath, suddenly nervous and tense. Once again she wished she could see his face. As it was, she was just going to have to ask him and try to 'feel' his initial response. By Faranth, who ever thought this would be so sharding difficult?! Still, she had to ask. If she left it up to him, there was no telling how long she would wait.
“It’s something I’ve been giving a great deal of thought to, and I think... I mean, I was wondering if you might... ah,” oh, shells, just ask him, “Darvin, don’t you think it’s time we got married?”

He blinked at her, and stared. He froze, eyes glancing about, suddenly, though his head didn't move. "... Oh. That kind of question. Ahm. Well. Sure." He blinked, and canted his head, slightly. "It has been a while, hasn't it? Uhm... Is it usually so soon? Or do you usually wait longer? I suppose if you'd like to, we certainly can." He chuckled, "I don't exactly intend to go to any Flights, any time soon, but I suppose it's not an issue." He leaned down, and kissed her. "If you'd like, then, sure." He smiled, warmly. "It'd be a nice way to start things off, here, too, wouldn't it?"

At first she was worried. Evie felt his entire body tense and go still, which she supposed was to be expected, but his initial response was less than reassuring. “Sure”? She’d hoped for a little more enthusiasm at least. Then he started talking, and she couldn’t help but smile at his somewhat awkward uncertainty. His kiss and the warmth in his voice dispelled any and all doubts she’d had.
“Are you always so eloquent?” she teased, amused and relieved. She leaned her head against his shoulder, “I would like to, very much, and I think it would be a -wonderful- way to start here. As soon as the Hold is finished, a wedding would be perfect.”
