She smiled broadly at his suggestion. “I think I’d like that. Though, it may be something of a challenge, taking lessons from a blind woman. We would have to be very patient with each other.”
“As for entertaining children, I certainly don’t mind.” There was a light in her face as she spoke, food forgotten, “I love children. There are few things more pleasing to hear than their laughter.” It was clear she sincerely meant every word. “I just wish I could do more for people. I miss riding from place to place, giving solace or happiness, seeing people smile...”
She trailed off, earnest passion for her craft fading as she became a little more withdrawn. A sad grin flashed on her face, “It’s funny how one can take for granted such a small thing.”
With a quick shake of her head, as if to ward off the threatening melancholy, she said, “Enough about me. Tell me about yourself, how do you spend your time when you aren't guiding me around or making claims to the Lord Holdership.” This last was said with a coy, almost teasing smile.

He blinked, suddenly, just catching the shift to melancholy. And then her coy, playful words. "... Hah. Usually, I'm at the Weyr, cleaning uo after man and beast. For the record, man makes bigger messes. And I've got to say, this is my first time trying for it. We do things a little differently, at the Weyr, with regards to succession." He sighed, softly, "... This is going to change quite a few things, I think. It ought to be interesting, at the least."
"I... Haven't really given myself much spare time, for quite a while. It was just... Easier that way, I suppose."

'Interesting' was probably an understatement, but she didn't say anything. Bad enough she was teasing him - though, she had to admit, she enjoyed it.
As he mentioned how little spare time he had, she looked toward the sound of his voice, though doubtful it was directly at him. Curious, she asked, "Easier?"
Then she winced. "Oh." She turned her head down a little, apologetically. "You mean, after..." she paused, a little awkward, not wanting to pry. "... after you lost Regolth."

His expression froze, as he fought for words. For composure. For... Something. His eyes flared, with surprise, and anguish, quickly stilled. He looked away, and bit his lip. His hands tensed on the table. "... It... Was at Ista Weyr, during the initial falling. I was helping get the Weyrwoman out... We'd... When I got to her chambers, the dragons... The Weyrleader had died. Tael... It was... I don't know. She lost consciousness. I had to carry her... We got her to the rim, to her dragon, and when I turned around..." He paused, very abruptly, soundlessly, and closed his eyes.
"... I haven't really thought about it, before now. Just kept going... Kind of hoped I could keep ahead of it." He frowned. "I guess becoming a Holder will mean I have to go back to my old name, won't it?" A soft, pensive sigh. "... I got the survivors here, and took over a new job, quick as I could. Like I said, I haven't really thought about it, before now." He paused, briefly, "... Or how it ought to effect me."

Stunned, she softly apologized, still looking down. “I’m sorry.” What else could she say? She couldn’t even begin to fathom what it must have been like, to so suddenly lose a part of yourself - well, she could, but she knew sudden blindness wasn’t nearly on the same magnitude as such a unique bond being severed.
She pursed her lips, considering what he said for a moment before lifting her head again. If she’d been able to see, she would have been studying him, a hint of determination mixed in with the compassion on her face.
Taking a breath, she said, “Maybe you should start, as difficult as it is. I know it’s much easier said than done, and that I can’t begin to understand what it's like for you, but I can't stand the thought of anyone living with any sort of hidden pain.”

He frowned, and nodded, slowly, reaching over, to place his hands atop her own, "... Yeah. I think it's about time I get started on that, unfortunately." He glanced down at his food, his appetite gone, "... I'm going to head back to the Weyr, for the night, and grab more of my clothes and such... And make arrangements for the rest to be packed up. I may be here a while." He put an off-key note of enthusiasm into his tone, chuckling, softly. "At least I get my vacation, huh?"

With a sigh and a small smile, she grasped his hands. "That's one way to look at it, I suppose."
"I should let you go, then," she let go of his hands as she said it, a little reluctantly. "Remember, you said you would come here me play. I'm going to hold you to that." Her mock-seriousness was reminiscent of an instructor scolding a student. She couldn't hold it for long, her expression quickly softening into a grin.

He smiled, and stepped forward, hugging her almost impulsively. "I'll see you again, soon. Don't worry about that. And... Wish me luck." He chuckled, quietly. "I get to tell the Weyrleader that I might accidentally become Lord Holder."
After a long moment, he released her, hesitantly, and gave a slight, boyish smile, "I'll see you tomorrow, huh, Ev?"

Her eyes went wide with startled surprise as she suddenly found herself being hugged. It took her a brief moment to recover.
Hugging him back, she wished him luck, shyly smiling as they let go. "Tomorrow. I'm looking forward to it."

He inclined his head, and gave a soft chuckle, moving off with uneven, almost distracted steps. As he passed the serving drudge, she gave him a slight smile. He laughed, and continued out into th hall.

Hearing D'vin leave, his steps fading as he went out into the hall, Evie reached out for the familiar feel of the walls. Letting them guide her, she too left the kitchens, headed back to her room with a smile on her face. She felt like playing - after all, it was good to keep in practice.
