It had begun! Maram could hardly continue her excitement as she actually gave Sorelle's hand a quick squeeze before the eggs began to rock.
The excitement was quickly replaced by utter shock as the little bronze blinked into /between/.
"No!" she gasped, her hands covering her mouth as she thought of how much that little bronze would have meant to the Weyr. This couldn't be happening....they had to have enough candidates. They just had to.
And then, the silver emerged. Maram rooted the little dragon on as it stumbled across the sands towards the candidates. It stopped. Eyes wide, Maram watched and waited, hoping it would choose one of them.

He hadn't meant to be late, but by the time the dragon that had been sent to pick him up from the Tannery arrived, things were already moving quickly on the sands.
With a nod to the rider, who quickly hurried in, Tobias had just entered the corridors when he heard the keening cries of the dragons. It stopped him in his tracks. What had happened? He darted forward until he could see the sands. Suddenly the sound of another egg cracking rent the air.
He turned his gaze to the sands and saw the little flash of near white hurtle across the sands. With a nod to those near the entrance, Tobias glanced up into the Stands. He could choose the spot that would be his due, but his eyes instead rested on someone else. Trying to climb up the already crowding space, Tobias nodded to the Weyrwoman, Weyrleader and Goldrider, but he truly didn't think they noticed as their eyes were riveted onto the sands.
He saw her, just a few rows up, but just then someone stepped forward and crowded the way. He tried to move around them. "Excuse me," he said, but the others were too intent on trying to watch the action to watch him. He looked around them to Chloe, hoping she had in fact seen him and wishing he could be by her side.

As Echo moved, so did the silver dragon. Again, silence as the dragon regarded Echo with whirling eyes. She completely ignored Zorenh. Behind her, other eggs were cracking or rocking, but still she stared at Echo. "This is the oddest thing I've ever seen," Sorelle said. Then, the dragon took a tiny step forward. Stop. Observe. Step. She repeated it until she was inches from Echo, her breathing causing the candidate's robes to move back and forth. No matter how hard Echo had tried to hide it from the rest of the world, her emotions were an open book to the silver dragon. Closing her eyelids, she took the final step, then she snaked her neck around Echo and rubbed her back with her soft cheek. Your Anayeth is here. Instead of asking for food, instead of demanding something, the cautious, silver dragon used her first moments to comfort her new lifemate. Though her stomach growled, she sent love to the emotionally raw dragonrider. Sivarith watched, her heart full of love for her newest child. The first Impression had finally happened. ---------------------- Anayeth is almost pure silver, but has small dark flecks along her hindquarters and down her back legs. She is very cautious and will need reassurance as she goes through these first steps in her life. She will grow to 34.9 meters long and have dainty features. Tag Echo

Post by Jeta and Issdanuth on Nov 14, 2010 14:38:18 GMT -5
Jeta was barely on the Sands when the first Dragon Hatched. It was a Silver Dragon and she Impressed to Echo. Jeta smiled at the other Candidate, Weyrling, and knew she had to congratulate her later. Jeta's brown hair was freshly cleaned and brushed. She had just finished drying when she heard the summons. Her brown eyes flashed when she saw Zorenh. She did not like the boy and she didn't want anything to do with him. Since he had appeared when she had helped R'enh wash his Bronze that boy had been there. Jeta then realized something. The last part of Zorenh's name was similar to R'enh's. She shook her head. There was no way the two were related. She decided to focus on the Hatching and if anyone felt the need to tell her who Zorenh's father was then so be it. For now it was none of her business.
Jeta's eyes wandered to the wobbling eggs. Was any of them for her? She did not know, but she hoped so. Even if she did not become a Weyrling this time around she hoped that she would learn something from this Hatching. She didn't know what, but she had to learn something. Maybe interesting combinations or something of that nature. The 16 Turn old girl shook her head. She had to focus on the Hatching! Jeta felt the excitement and the anticipation coursed through her body as the Hatching continued.
So much excitement filled the air, but Jeta knew there was also anticipation and fear. No Hatching ever went smoothly from what she heard. Jeta just hoped that nothing bad would happen in this one in the way of maulings. Of course it would be sad if there were some dud eggs, but it would be better than mauled Candidates on the Sands, bleeding their lives out. That image sent a shudder of horror through the girl. She hoped that she didn't have to see it in action and up close. Movement caught her eye. Was that a crack in one of the eggs? Jeta bit her lip and waited.

The pails of meat were waiting nearby as were all the assistants for the Weyrlingmaster. Ready to escort the pairs off the sands as they impressed.
He and a few apprentices and a journeyman stood by as well just in case of an accident. Candidates had been frozen in place before and forgotten to get out of the way of an awkward hatchling in time to prevent injury.
And from the looks of the first impression he was going to need another dragonhealer. He had a promising journeyman that was almost ready for Senior status.
He smiled in Echo's direction happy for the young woman who'd suffered so recently. He knew she'd suffered more that just the physical pain but this was an amazing moment for her and he only hoped she would be able to truly appreciate the high honor that had come to her in the form of that small slip of silver dragon.

Almost at the same time, two eggs cracked open, each spewing forth a green. They looked at each other, making snapping motions with their jaws, before one of them moved away from its egg and ran straight at Jeta, who was the closest Candidate. It bowled her over and screamed right in her face until another candidate distracted it and it took off after him, but stopped, scattering sand all over everyone as it came to another female candidate. Their bond, thankfully, saved the rest from its fiery temper. The other green, the one left behind, stuck her head into the egg the other had come out of, sniffing and pushing it. Suddenly, she felt the pull of her lifemate and her head flew up, her eyes whirling, and she, too, headed for Jeta. This one, however, didn't have blood in mind and she moved slower, tripping over her wings several times before getting to the young woman. She nosed Jeta's supine form. "I am Issdanuth. Where is the food?" The green dragon continued to nose Jeta gently, hoping she would get up soon. The dragon's stomach growled noisily. -------------------------- Issdanuth is curious about everything and she will be a handful, always sticking her nose where it doesn't belong. She will be a quick flyer, and quite the little acrobat. She will be 22.7 meters long when she is full grown. Her green hide has subtle dappling all across her back and wings and her belly is a much lighter green.

Echo looked at Zorenh and back at the Silver. Even by her stance, everyone could tell that the girl was obviously panicking. Nothing like this had ever happened in a hatching. Nothing like this had ever happened to Echo. But with every small movement Echo made, the silver-colored dragon hatchling followed. She seemed almost… cautious to Impress.
Then, with a final movement, Echo watched as the silver dragon closed her eyelids and snaked around her body. The second Echo felt the small dragonet’s cheek stroke her back and Echo felt her walls break. With a sob, the Dragonhealer fell to the ground and wrapped her arms around hug the silver so tightly she was sure poor Anayeth’s head would pop off. For the dragonet’s name was Anayeth. She said so herself.
“Oh, Anayeth! I can’t believe I ever doubted! I’m so sorry!” Echo cried out, burying her head in the Silver’s shoulderblade. Anayeth continued to soothe. I am here. Anayeth said again, but then her stomach growled. With a short burp, Anayeth blinked, You are fine now, you are mine and I am yours.
Presently, after letting a few more tears drop from her face, Echo pulled away, as did Anayeth, whose eyes were just now beginning to lose their rainbow of brilliant Impression. “You are hungry,” Echo stated, wiping her tears away with the robe that draped across her shoulders. She stood and watched her little dragonet stand cautiously, as well. Are you sure?
“Positively. Let’s go, Anayeth.” Echo said with a small waver in her voice. Anayeth followed, slower, as if cautiously, and the two newly Impressed Weyrlings walked off the Sands to feed.

“Oh, no, he should have Impressed. He should have Impressed to you, Zorenh!”
He appreciated her vote of confidence, but trying to override seventeen years of poor self confidence made him doubt he would ever Impress. As the silver eyed Echo, Zorenh took on a protective stance, ready to jump to her assistance should she need it.
“Isn’t she supposed to Impress or move on?”
He shrugged, but kept silent, not wanting to spook the beast. Far off, he heard a candidate cry out and the awful sound of a dragon's scream. However, it wasn't followed by gasps from those who watched, so he tried to remain hopeful that no one was injured. His eyes narrowed as the silver followed Echo, but then the two of them were one. Goosebumps traveled up his arms as he realized Echo had Impressed.
"Don't break her," he cautioned Echo, a huge smile on his face, but he seriously doubted she heard him as she and her new lifemate left the sands. Zorenh sighed and turned his eyes to the scant few remaining eggs.
"Only seven left," someone said. Zorenh gripped the fabric of his tunic as the anticipation continued to mount. He looked over his shoulder at R'enh and Maram. Disappointing them would be a huge failure. He caught Maram's eye and suddenly her words from their first dinner together hit him like a rock.
"One thing that life has shown me is that we make our own paths and it does not matter what was in the past. It is the present we make for ourselves that truly matters."
His eyes opened wide and he turned his head back to watch the eggs.
"Make my own path," he said. He felt strong. For the first time in his life, he felt like he had a future, that he really belonged.

Post by Stephanie and Lialsuth on Nov 14, 2010 21:09:32 GMT -5
The day had come! At last the long awaited day! People came from all over the weyr and holds to observe and maybe even try their chance at hatching a dragon. She was one of them, hearing the calls and answering. She had been busy tending to chores, when she heard the dragons vibrations and felt it at her toes. She hurried to the scene. Stephanie came up to the sands, she was late but she was here. There were eggs... eggs! Some already hatched, some still waiting, some dying!!! She stood, observing the eggs as the hatched ones found lifemates. Was there any left for her? She desperatly searched for an egg, then sat in front of one and started to talk softly, "If you want a life mate.. I hope its me.. oh and sorry for being late." She gently brushed some sand off the egg, hearing the vibrations. She got excited and smiled. Would she hatch an egg today?

They were late. Very, very late.
But being placed on elevator duty gave them no other option than to just continue transporting the Weyrfolk to the Sands until everyone was finally there.
'Ldronmine...Panitath's is looking for us. For you. And I want to go see the babies. Are we done yet?', came the complaint from Heroth's mindvoice as they sped to the top of the Weyr, Heroth's bronze wings beating the air furiously as he became more and more impatient.
**I think we might be. But J'lor would skin my hide if I rob someone of watching the Hatching. We'll get there. I promise.**
The only response was an irritated snort as they landed at the cliff-edge. Just as Heroth had given up hope upon seeing a couple of high-ranking officials emerge, thinking L'dron would insist on doing two more trips to the Sands...L'dron's own impatience set in.
**Shards... forget this. They can walk down. Get us to the Sands!**
I thought you'd never ask.
So without a second look at the officials, who were waving their arms in the air desperately, Heroth dove down towards the Sands, unfurling his wings at the last second in order to not crash into the ground. Instead; they landed powerfully, Heroth's feet touching the ground simultaneously which caused a micro sand-flurry.
Leaping off, L'dron paused for a second to give Heroth a brief eyeridge rub, and then hurried off to the Stands as Heroth took to the rafters.
**Enjoy not being the youngest anymore!!**
I already am, Mine. I'm off to find Panitath...I think she saved a spot for me. No thanks to you.
**We had to at least show up to our assigned duty!**
'I know, Mine.' , was all that Heroth replied...along with the rumble of faint mental laughter, and the sense of unspoken love.
L'dron began pushing through the crowds the moment Echo Impressed; the pair arrived just in time to see only the happy events of the Hatching, completely unaware of the lost bronze. As L'dron made his way to the front, he cheered his old acquaintance the DragonHealer on. There was no other person he could imagine that deserved the title of Silverrider from this hatching more.
-----
Just as L'dron was cheering, Heroth was humming as he found Panitath and edged his way next to the Silver dragon, inclining his head slightly in acknowledgement to her Queen status.

Sorelle saw the look that Zorenh sent to R'enh and Maram. Since part of her 'retirement' work was to tend to the records and to council the existing weyrwoman, she knew about his relationship to R'enh. She hoped that the two of them would continue what they had started and it wouldn't all blow up in their faces once Zorenh finally Impressed and started his training. The egg in front of Stephanie shattered and a bronze head thrust forward. She was much too close and she was quickly trampled as the dragon pushed itself out of the egg and onto the sand. One of its claws caught her in the arm and dug in deeply before he extracted it and flopped headfirst into a pile just past her, all tangled up in his wings. He tried to get up but kept floundering around, his tail whipping dangerously close to Stephanie. "Mine. Help your Rath." The words of the Bronze flashed into Zorenh's mind. Rath continued to struggle, his bloodied claws threatening to tear apart his wings. --------------------------- Rath's bronze hide has no markings, just pure bronze coloring, except for a single, dark ring around the base of his whip-like tail. He is speedy with quick, jerky movements. When he wants things, he wants them NOW.

As soon as Stephanie hit the ground, Zorenh started running to her aid. "Are you okay," he asked her as he dropped down by her side. "Put some pressure on--"
"Mine. Help your Rath."
The plight of Stephanie was immediately forgotten. Zorenh stood up rapidly, showering the injured girl with particles of sand in his haste. He ran over to the dragon's side.
**Easy... you'll hurt yourself. Stop. Let me help.**
The bronze dragon struggled once more and then held completely still. Zorenh reached out, his hand trembling, and cautiously extracted one of the wings from under the dragon's belly and helped fold them against the glistening body. He moved around to the other side, and did the same thing. Swirling eyes met his and his entire world disappeared. He ceased being Zorenh. Instead, the two were as one. One entity, one soul. This was no simple beast. Finally, he understood.
"Feed me. Feed me now."
Zorenh laughed. "Okay, okay. Just take it slow, you don't want to-"
But the dragon was already caught up again in his wings. Grunting, Zorenh helped Rath again. "Hold them there," he said. Rath shook his entire body in frustration, causing the wings to fall out of position yet again.
"Feed me!"
Zorenh let out an exasperated breath, but the love in his heart overcame any ill feelings. He once again put the wings into the proper position. Holding up his hands, he waited for them to unfurl, but Rath held them tight. Zorenh's pride in the little dragon was felt by Rath and he grunted.
"Food now?"
"Yes... this way." He threw a triumphant, jubilant, ecstatic grin to the stands, specifically toward R'enh, and the two left the sands. Rath's tail whipped the air in anticipation of food.

To the right of Rath's empty shell, another egg wobbled and shuddered, its occupant trying to break free from its confinement. It remained still for a few moments, only to be followed by even more violent thrashing. A piece broke off and a whirling eye looked out at the world. A small sound emanated from the hole and a green claw emerged. Pushing, the dragon managed to break most of the egg apart. She blinked and searched the sands, oblivious to the fact that a large piece of eggshell was on top of her head, like a dome-shaped hat. Her eyes lit on the fallen form of Stephanie and her heartbeat accelerated. She waddled over to the woman. "I am your Lialsuth. You are hurt, Mine!" Lialsuth placed her nose next to Stephanie's head and nuzzled her with concern. ----------------------------- Lialsuth will be 23.0 meters when she is full grown. Polite, but forgetful even for a dragon, she will need extra training to help her remember her tasks. She will fly slightly slower than most greens even into adulthood, but will have the heart and stamina to push herself. She is a medium green, with dark, emerald wings and light green webbing.

Each time Zorenh had looked toward them he’d tossed back a smile of encouragement, the loss of the little bronze still tore at his heart but another Silver was a very positive sign.
R’enh was almost on his feet when he saw another little bronze hatchling run over one of the female candidates. But Zorenh was faster and R’enh nodded at his protective instinct.
Suddenly Zorenh stopped and started helping the little dragon and he held his breath for a moment that almost seemed to stand still in time. Then from somewhere behind him he heard Renhick’s voice “YES, that’s my BROTHER” and he started laughing.
He reached for Maram’s hand and squeezed. His other fist went into the air in salute “He got bronze!” he said as his heart swelled with pride.
He grinned as the pair moved off the sands toward the feeding pens. They would really have something special to celebrate tonight.
R’enh grabbed Maram and kissed her and then turned to his other side and picked up Sorelle and kissed her too.
He could hardly sit still for the rest of the hatching but he knew he had to. Once all the eggs had hatched he stood and in a loud voice thanked everyone for attending then invited them all to the banquet.
He stepped forward and kissed Sorelle's hand and then turned to give Sivarith a sweeping bow just like the one he'd so often seen from N'lon when her hatchings were finished.

The eggs sat in the sand, some hatching and some not. Stephanie could hardly contian herself as she talked to the egg. Already a silver and some bronzes had hatched. She was hoping for a green, a simple, little dragon.. She watched the egg as she talked, and looked away barely a moment.. barely a split second, when she heard a tapping sound, like a tap on some shell, and then a cracking sound. Just then a bronze trampled her and dug his claw into her arm. "Ouch!" She cried out, and saw a few people rushing to her side, as she stared up at them she sat up.. Her eyes returned to her egg. Stephanie watched in awe, pure awe, as a crack formed on the egg she was talking to, and a swirling eye appeared. "Yes, yes.. come to me, mine..." She said softly, as the little dragon hatched and sat there, a piece of her shell on her head. "I am your Lialsuth. You are hurt, Mine!" The little dragon said urgently. For a moment Stephanie's heart beat fast, and she could have sworn she could hear the dragon in her mind. Echoing... talking.. in her mind? She replied softly, "You're beautiful... Lialsuth..." she said softly, and realized she had a cut on her arm, the stining coming as renewed pain; she was hurt, just as the dragon clearly pointed out. She ripped off part of her sleeve from her other arm. This was not thought through, but it was the best she could come up with. As she wrapped it in a wad around her arm, blood quickly stained it. "Oh its fine, my dear." She said sofly and gently scooped up her new lifemate. "You are everything I ever hoped for." She said softly, kissing the top of her lifemates head. "You'll understand some day."
She looked down at Lialsuth. She realized the youngster might be referring to the fact that she had thought moments ago she might not get a dragon at all, but all of that was swept away as she stared at her emerald beauty. "You're perfect... Do you want to be my lifemate, Lialsuth? Or have you already chosen?" She looked back down at her arm, seeing the bleeding start to slow, she checked.. sure enough it was already clotting up, but still bleeding just a bit. "Can I get a healer over here?" She called, then looked at Lialsuth and whispered, "No worries, I'll be fine." The words she didn't add and hoped the dragon wouldn't hear were the words I hope...
I am hungry, mine. Food please? Meanwhile she took out a bit of food, taking out her knife, "Stand back." She said as Lialsuth stretched her neck forward to sniff the blade. As the command was given, Lialsuth trembled, not understanding the object. But she seemed to realize that she was not to touch it. However she nosed the meat Stephanie lifted the blade away from it. "Wait. Wait, Lialsuth." She pulled back and clammered around in circles, laying down after her eyes fell halfway shut. The meat finished being cut up into little pieces, and Lialsuth opened one eye, gulped it down in three big gulps, then walked up to Stephanie, curling up against her and laying her head in her lap. "Promise you'll be here till I'm asleep?" She asked nervously, a yawn caught in her tones. Stephanie smiled, "Yes, and when you wake, too.." With that, the little dragons eyes fell shut and she was asleep. Stephanie scooped up her newly hatched dragon, gently taking off the egg shell off her head, and kissing the forehead of the little darling. And thus she took her to the weyrling barracks to sleep/
