Nerys felt her whole body tremble as the dragons keening sounds rent the air and the Weyrleader darted out of the kitchens. Nerys closed her eyes and sucked in a breath, as the sound seemed to fill every corner of the Weyr, louder and stronger than others she recalled hearing.
"The Goldrider is gone!" Came a startled shout from someone else in the room.
Nerys' eyes widened in surprise! Maram, Maram was gone? What happened? Oh no! She seemed to almost sway where she stood at the thought of the loss of their one young, healthy gold and her rider.
"Tael never recovered from whatever happened to her," another voice flittered through the noise of the crowd. Tael? Who was Tael? Suddenly Nerys remembered the injured goldrider that they had found on their journey. The one who had come with...Her eyes opened wider as she recalled that D'vin had brought her. D'vin had known her.
She saw his anguished face the first time they had spoken here in the Weyrbowl, knew the losses effected him as much as the others though he hid it well. He'd been like a father to her since they'd arrived, and her heart was breaking for him in this moment.
"I'm sorry. I have to go." Nerys managed through a strangled whisper before turning and darting out of the kitchens, hoping she could do something to help her friend.

Brekka watched the Weyrleader drop the tray she'd prepared. Some of the stew spilled on the tray as he ran out of the kitchens. She went to the door and watched him run across the bowl back to the infirmary and shook her head.
The Dragons were all keening for the death of one of them though she didn't know which. She longed for the day that voice would inhabit her mind and heart. She turned to one of the drudges gave her the tray after wiping up the spills.
"Take this to the infirmary and make sure the patients get something to eat. Come back for more if there isn't enough to go around."
Tears welled up in her eyes, she knew that sound and it meant that one of them had passed /between/.
She worked mechanically finishing her baking and after the last loaf came out of the oven she finally took a couple of slices of warm bread for herself then slathering them with butter she went back to the Candidate barracks. She sat on her bed with the knees pulled up under her chin and rocked.
Her parents and almost everyone she'd known before the disaster were gone. The warm bread cooled as she mourned.
