Now that they had reached the first large island, Maram had felt waves of relief. They were by no means finished with this journey, but at least they were free from the tremors that had rocked the mainland.
She still had not determined the location of the other Gold dragon, though Chalarath insisted they were near somewhere.
After having helped the new 'colonists' as they were get settled for a brief respite, Maram did the same.
When she woke, she felt more rested and she immediately got to work, seeing to the needs of all the riders and individuals who had come with them. Was anyone injured? Was anyone sick? Hungry?
She knew that patrols had been sent out to check on the nearby Southern Continent, an area that few had ventured towards, yet it was necessary for them.
Hopefully soon, they would reach a new, permanent home. For now, they were waiting for news and resting for the remainder of their journey.

He lay his bedroll near Mnoranth and close to the queens. Sorelle particularly needed some extra care. One of the women from the lower caverns he recognized from Benden came to make up her bed and assured him she’d eaten. He told her that he had to sleep. Mnoranth was already fast asleep and he was feeling the effects of being up almost two days.
He finally went to find Maram. He told her of the patrols of rested dragons he’d sent out in as many directions as he could and told her to wake him if she needed him. He pointed out where he’d be for now. The bulk of his dragon provided a comforting presence even though he was sleeping.
The hated to leave her for the moment but he had to get some sleep even for a little while if he was going to be any use to them later.
“Please wake me if you need anything. I’ve got to sleep or I will nod off.”
There was so much to be done he couldn’t begin to get his head around it until he’d refreshed himself so took off to his bedroll and lay down.

She kept herself busy, surviving on little sleep and little food. If she pondered to much on the things she had lost she'd be completly useless, probably break down, mourning for her lost hopes and dreams that had died along with her parents and most of pern.
At least that had been her feelings for the last few days, but she was the type that kept bouncing back, no matter what life threw at her. She had already made new plans, had already worked out the advantages of being with so few survivors, was already planning a grant future for herself.
That didn't mean she didn't do what was expected of her, oh no not at all. In fact she frequently scurried around the new camp, making a list of those who where injured and what their exact injuries were. The weywoman would probably want to know.
Well there was another problem there wasn't there? there wasn't just one weyrwoman here at the moment, though so far she had thought Maram the most compitent, and she seemed to be the one in charge at the moment. Oh well, she'd just report to her and than it was up to the gold rider to do something with it right?.
She walked up to her when she wasn't talking to anyone."Excuse me weyrwoman?"She tilted her head slightly to the side, her tone appropriatly polite and respectfull"I have a list of injured and injuries for you...I thought you might want one..".

Maram turned when she heard a voice addressing her.
"I have a list of injured and injuries for you...I thought you might want one..".
Maram took the list that the woman had complied on a scroll. Glancing over it, Maram couldn't help but feel almost defeated. So many people and dragons that needed tending. This new disaster had caught them all by surprise.
"Thank you," Maram said, looking up at the raven-haired woman. "Are you a healer then? What can we do to help you see to the injuries? If you need something, just let me know and I will see to it that man or dragon tries to acquire it. Do you need extra hands? I can help and so can many others." Maram waited a moment and then added, "I am Maram, by the way, though not technically Weyrwoman until we find a Weyr and my Chalarath rises." Though in her heart, Maram knew she was the closest thing they had to a Weyrwoman for now. Sorelle was not herself, even though she had been senior at Benden, and Chalarath had already indicated to Maram that Sivarnth would likely not rise again.
Maram waited for the other woman to introduce herself and let her know what kind of help and supplies she would need to see to the wounded and injured.

"With all due respect weyrwoman, you are the closest thing we have to one, and it would seem to me that your the one in charge, even if it is only for the moment"She stated calmly, confirming the weyrwomans own thoughts.
She gave the blond haired woman a curt nod"Yes, I am a healer, a senior journey woman, I haven't seen any of the masters yet I'm afraid.. so I took charge of things for now...". She was simply stating the facts, not looking for any praise or confirmation.
"My name is Alira"She answered as the gold rider introduced herself as Maram. She pondered over the question of what she would need, her healer trained mind quickly sorting through the injuries and patients and what care they might need"well I don't think what meager supply of numbweed I have will sufice for all these injuries, also if you still have riders or weyrfolk familiar with dragon healing I will need help with the dragons.."she shuffled a little uneasy, loathing to admit that"I have never really tried healing a dragon before..".

Post by Tobias on Jun 26, 2010 18:17:09 GMT -5
Having said his goodbyes to Chloe, Tobias made his way back to where he had left his things the night before. In short time, he had unpacked the tools he carried, the skins that he still had and set up a makeshift work area. He couldn't do much more than patch up pieces with the rudimentary things he had with him, but it was better than nothing.
When one of the herdsman called him over, Tobias dropped his things and followed. He watched as the animals that had been sought to feed the crowds were being prepared. Tobias had long since lost any uneasy feelings at seeing animals at this stage. It was a part of the job, sometimes, though he had to admit, he preferred his task to that of the herders.
"Yes, yes, I'll take anything you have. No matter the quality. We have so little hide left to work with, I'll make anything work for us until we can gather better quality." Tobias had run his fingers over the few hides that lay drying in the sun. He'd need supplies to clean and cure them properly. He wondered if he could find them. Was there any hope that they would be able to go back and see if the land had settled or if they could at least get more supplies? Tobias really could use some of the equipment that had been in the Hall. Did any of it survive?

He’d finally gotten some sleep after two days of flying and he woke up to protesting muscles. Mnoranth’s eye opened as big as his head and swirled with contented colors then lifted his head.
He jumped up and walked down to the beach barefoot and shed his clothes before jumping into the water. He dove under the surface and scrubbed himself as best he could before leaving the water and drying himself with his shirt. He pulled on his under wear and his leather flight pants. Then tossing the damp shirt over his shoulder went to find the Gold rider Maram.
He passed the Gold dragon and did a double take pausing to look at Chalaranth then made a beeline to her rider. She was talking to someone so he said “Excuse me may I please speak to you a moment?” he pulled her aside.
“Are you aware of her condition?” he asked as gently as he could. “Is there any way to put it off?” his mind was a whirl. There were only three bronzes in the vicinity and one large brown. It was unworthy of her. She was an elegant and beautiful gold and worth a full suite of suitors.
“She is worth… you are worth so much more.”

"Nice to meet you Alira." Maram replied with a kind smile. "I'll see to it that we get as many of our healers gathered up and sent your way. Many of our people likely have some skill in the area, and could offer assistance under your guidance." Maram motioned a young boy over and gave him a message to take to Sorelle. "Sorelle, our other goldrider here is wonderful at organizing people when she is feeling up to it. Jamas will give her the message and have any with healing skills meet you at the firepit."
Their conversation was soon interrupted as R'enh pulled her to the side. Tossing an apologetic look to the young healer, Maram's eyes darted open for a moment at R'enh's words. What was wrong with Chalarath? Her gaze turned quickly in the direction of her dragon.
His next words, however, confirmed what she's sensed growing now inside the glistening queen.
“Is there any way to put it off?”
"I don't know..." she began but then his next words gave her pause.
“She is worth… you are worth so much more.”
Maram couldn't hide the smile that began to take shape at his words. It felt good to be recognized in some way, after all the hardship, terror and destruction she had seen. To be reminded of the moments like this that took you by surprise and caused a strange feeling to flutter inside.
"R'enh, I've never had to try and keep Chalarath from rising. I don't know if it's possible." She stepped closer, her teeth raking her bottom lip in a sign of uncertainty. "I'm worried though. What if we don't find a place before she rises? What if I can't hold her back? What if she flies into something unaware?" Maram hadn't meant to spout off her fears that she'd been trying so hard to hold from Chalarath, but standing here in front of him, she had voiced them all. "It's not going to be long," she added in a soft voice.

Nerystimon sat, empty and disillusioned eyes staring out at the space before her. These past days had been a blur, of waking, of sleeping, of dark thoughts, and doubts. She’d hardly spoken to anyone since the rider had found her, slumped in a pile of exhaustion and despair in front of what had once been her family’s proud Hold.
The rider and his companions had shot glances her way throughout the journey, but clearly seemed uncertain what to do with her. He’d even tried to get help, or at least that’s what she assumed all the other visitors who had tried to talk to her had been…help. Nerystimon didn’t want help. She wanted to wallow in the despair of having lost everyone and everything that was near and dear to her. Her parents, her brothers, her home, even her pets. All gone in a blink of a eye. Why was she still here? Why couldn’t the hands of fate have taken her too? Part of her thought that perhaps she could finish the job fate had started, yet she hadn’t been able to bring herself to do it.
Pale, alone, and afraid, Nerystimon slumped against the tree, farther away from the camp than any would have likely wanted her to go, but she didn’t care. She was sick of them trying to help, trying to make her feel better because she had survived. Why should that make me happy, she thought with despair. What purpose is there to survival now? We’ll all likely die soon anyway with the ways things have been going, she thought to herself, so why should she bother to care that she was alive.
So lost in her feelings of hurt, despair and loneliness, Nerystimon couldn’t even cry. Perhaps if she could, she’d be able to release the tightness within her that seemed at times to almost suffocate her. She plucked at the tiny blade of grass on the ground beside her. Her head hung downcast. Nerystimon could find no joy, no happiness in the world around her. Everything seemed dark and bleak, and that was how she felt inside as well. Completely and totally alone. No one to care about and no one to care about her. Her world was gone. She pulled her knees up to her chin and rested her head on it, swallowing past the lump in her throat as she sat in despairing silence.

He jolted upright with a scream, bathing in cold sweat and tears stinging in his eyes. It had been his first bit of sleep in days, but it didn't give him the rest it should have, images of fire, people dying everything that had been swiped away, playing in his head, over and over and over. He desperatly clawed at his head, untill his scalp started to bleed, he just didn't realise it was.
His sister had made him eat, made him drink, said he would go into shock? Was this shock?, he felt numb and strangely detached, the sounds of the camp sounding so distant to him.
Anyone who looked at him would probably be slightly disturbed about the pale youth, sitting with his back against a tree, staring at his blood stained hands as his bleeding scalp slowly dyed his blond hair red. His grey eyes void of any emotion. Like he wasn't really there, his soul having already fled his body.
He probably wasn't the only one in such a state though.

”I'm worried though. What if we don't find a place before she rises? What if I can't hold her back? What if she flies into something unaware?"
His heart dropped he hadn’t even thought of that and there was absolutely no way to protect her should she rise and he’d just sent his wing seconds away to find what they could on the nearby islands.
He put his hand to his forehead and started pacing. There had to be a way but there were no records everything was back at the weyrs. He knew everything was still on fire and there was next to nothing retrievable. He looked at her completely at a loss.
There was so much to do and so little time. Now their time had telescoped down to a matter of weeks. Chalaranth could wake up any morning ravenous and ready to fly. He had to keep the others closer or they all had to move together.
There was no help for it. They had to move.
“We can’t let everyone just sit here. We’ll have to get them moving so we can find that island sooner rather than later. So she has a proper Weyr and proper hatching sands.” He shook his head talking to himself not even remembering that the Golden Chalaranth’s rider was standing right there.
“We can’t just let it happen in the middle of nowhere.”
He turned and looked back at the younger woman rather sheepishly “I’m so sorry.” He said “We’ll get there… I know we’ll get there”

“We can’t let everyone just sit here. We’ll have to get them moving so we can find that island sooner rather than later."
Maram worried her hands together for a moment, before nodding her head. "The group was hoping to rest, I know, but I don't know if we can wait." It was hard to keep the worry out of her voice.
Maram mine, what has you upset? Came the voice of her beloved. She could tell the dragon was concerned for her, yet Maram did not want to voice her fears over the dragon's safety, instead she replied. 'We're going to have to move sooner, my sweet. We can't chance staying here as long as we'd hoped.'
I will inform the others. And Maram trusted that her dragon would touch all the other dragons around her, informing them of the change to plans.
"Chalarath has broadcast the need for us all to move. The riders will mobilize once more and gather all the needed supplies and people. I'll do what I can to move things along. We've got quite a few injured, but hopefully we can make it without losing any of them." Her voice showed her concern, she had after all seen the list the healer, Alira had shown her. Most of the injuries had been minor with only a few to really be worried about.
It wouldn't take her long to get everyone up and moving. All the plans to rest here for a bit seemed to vanish. Hopefully the others would all understand the urgent need to move. They had managed one night of uninterrupted rest for the first time in what felt like a century, but that was not likely to continue if they started moving.
Maram glanced out to the south, over the sea, where she knew some of the riders had gone earlier in the day. She could almost make out the shape of the next island. Meaning it wasn't far. At least it would afford the dragons who needed to rest a chance to do so before they continued onward.
"What do you think we should do?" Maram looked at R'enh, hoping he had the answers, for she herself was at a loss as to how to handle things in this moment.

He nodded , it was a good start.
"The queen bids us all to organize and begin transport to the new weyr we seek.
He smiled in Mnoranth's direction then turned back to the gold rider. "Your message is already being passed." he said.
"Alright, we'll go up and oversee some of the scouting and you can take care of things here. Mnoranth tells me Sorelle is coping this morning and Sivarith is in a mood to fly."
"Hopefully this will be taken as a good sign." he said. The sight of a queen flying was a rare and beautiful thing. He only hoped it would do the trick and uplift the hearts of so many that were in despair.

"The queen bids us all to organize and begin transport to the new weyr we seek.”
She heard her Aloranth speak into her mind. Of course she had no way of knowing that the words were identical to the words spoken to their bronze wing leader.
She thought immediately of Tobias. She couldn’t bear to lose him or lose track of him so she sent herself back to where she’d left him knowing he’d already be gone. She searched the vicinity and finally found where he’d set up shop.
She told all the people around the area that they were to pack everything up for another hop to their next stop then she put out her hand to Tobias. “Do you want to ride with me?” she asked him softly. “We can set up our camp together tonight.” She became a bit uncertain suddenly, not knowing if he felt the same after what they’d shared last night. So she tried to be nonchalant… “If you want” she added.
She started helping him pack and didn’t look in his eyes because she wasn’t entirely sure what she’d find. She began running back and forth between his encampment and Aloranth putting the bags into the attached nets so she could carry the belongings of the tanner.

Before he knew it the camp was a hubbub of activity once more. Tobias looked up and there standing before him was the one person he hadn't been able to get off his mind all day.
“Do you want to ride with me?” she asked him softly. “We can set up our camp together tonight. If you want.
Tobias masked a grin and took a step closer to her, his hand touching her arm, though it was covered with her riding tunic.
"I would like that very much, Chloe. Very much." He wanted to kiss her, to taste those sweet lips once again, but stopped that idea before it could take root. Now was not the time or place as everyone was preparing to fly once more. Though he had hoped for more time to rest, he also was anxious to get moving, to see if they could find this island that the others seemed to whisper about. Yet no one knew if it was really real.
After she'd left with satchels of his things, Tobias packed up what remained. Then, hoisting the bag over his shoulder, he followed the way he knew she had gone. He actually paused and gulped as he stood looking up at the green dragon and the woman he found so appealing climbing on her back.
More dragonriding, he thought with a queasy feeling growing in his stomach. He hated that strange feeling of nothingness he had felt when they blinked in and out of places. Tobias, who could normally tackle anything found himself rooted to the spot, wondering if Chloe's dragon would be friendly or not, not that he'd ever met one who wasn't per se, but still just the sheer size of the magnificent beasts seemed to unnerve the tanner no matter how often he saw them or how much flying he had done adragonback in recent days.
Dare he approach? Should he wait for her to come back? By the Shards, he had no problem helping the riders fit a harness to their dragon, but when it came time to think about actually riding on one again, Tobias found he lost all rationale thought.
