However, when it comes time for work, L’yst is determined and hard-working. He doesn’t take anything but the best from his weyrlings and himself. Being very studious, he has learned many skills and has a passing knowledge of quite a few of the crafts found in and around Pern.
Character Background:
Born Lanyst in a Minor Hold not far from Fort Hold, Lanyst’s mother was the daughter of the Holder, while his father was a Journeyman Healer. Growing up, Lanyst spent the majority of his time interacting with the beasts in the Hold and shadowing both his mother and his father. Lanyst was curious about everything, always asking questions in order to learn more. This trait is something he carried with him even after he was Searched.
At age 15, Lanyst had already taken on an apprenticeship in Healing, though he hoped one day to specialize in animal healing. Lanyst would get that chance when one day the dragons flew above his Hold and soon whisked him away to stand on the sands of Telgar Weyr before the eggs.
Lanyst did not Impress at that first hatching, but he found a new love for the Healing work he had begun. Studying under a Master Healer who specialized in Dragon Healing, Lanyst might have achieved the status of Journeyman himself had he not been called up to stand on the warm sands once again at age 18.
It was that warm day as the eggs rocked, that Lanyst found his true love, Woreth. Woreth, the stunning blue dragon that called to him the moment he broke forth from his shell. L’yst now had a new focus to his life, loving, living and training with Woreth to be the best riding team they could be.
L’yst showed promise as a wingrider at Telgar and proved himself to be quite talented. It was with the recommendation of his wingleader that L’yst was asked to take on the role of Weyrlingmaster. He worked at this task for a number of years, before trading out the role with another and resuming his work as a standard wingrider. L’yst had just resumed the Weyrlingmaster position when the strange rocks began to fall from the sky.
L’yst had watched some from the Weyr take flight at the sight of the falling rocks. Though he wanted to join them, he felt compelled to stay behind with the young weyrlings. Without the Weyrleaders approval, L’yst felt torn. Finally, when the ground rumbled and the sky darkened, L’yst would wait no longer. He left with a second wave of Telgar dragons, this one included many of his weyrlings who trusted his leadership. Together, they flew to safety until the found the others.

“L’yst, this is foolishness, you can’t go. The Weyrleader has said that we have nothing to fear.” H’nock, L’yst’s closest friend in the Weyr had pulled him aside after the weryling lesson of the day.
“H’nock, come with us. Both Woreth and I have a bad feeling about this new smoke. I know B’nod thinks we should all remain, but he has been wrong before. Come with us.” L’yst clasped his friend’s arm, looking him in the eye, pleading with him.
“No,” H’nock shook his head. “I stand with B’nod.” And L’yst watched as his dearest friend whipped his arm away and turned his back.
“Master L’yst?” A young boy’s voice spoke quietly from behind. L’yst turned to see that four of his weyrlings were standing there, staring at him. “Are you going with the others? Is it not safe for us to stay here?” Now, what was he to do? He had wanted to speak with the weyrlings about going, but had felt that he could not. It was bad enough that he was going to turn from his Weryleader, but to take the young ones with him?
“Please tell us the truth,” the young voices begged, and so L’yst did. When morning came, the five young riders sat atop their beasts beside the weyrlingmaster, prepared to join him on this new journey. They trusted him, they respected him, and L’yst vowed to see them to safety.
It is time, stated Woreth, and L’yst led his handful of weyrlings to the sky behind the other riders who had chosen to leave their lives behind them.
